H. L. HYRE. Weather-Strip.
No. 215,750. Patented May 27, 1879..
' @immsms: 1 mfiamlthm PETERS, PHUTO-LRMOGRAPMER, WA$HINGTON D C DNITED STATES PATENT Orr-ion HARRISON L. HYRE, OF LEXINGTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID N. HYRE AND ROBERT D. JONES, OF EUREKA, KANSAS, ONE-THIRD TO EACH.
IMPROVEMENT lN WEATH ER-STRI PS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2] 5,750, dated May 27, 1879; application filed To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON L. HYRE, of Lexington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVeather-Strips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to weather-strips for doors; and it consists in a hinged metallic strip, combined with a spring arranged on the inside of the door and projecting under the same, to hold the strip raised when the door is open, and means for withdrawing the spring automatically when the door is closed, to allow the strip to fall down, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an inside view of a door embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is an outside view thereof.
A represents a door-frame, with sill B and a door, 0, hinged to the frame, in the usual manner. 011 the outer side of the door, near the bottom, is hinged a metal plate,D, which, when the door is closed, drops down over the sill B, as shown in Fig. 2. To the door 0 is secured an inclined strip, E, fitting over the upper hinged edge of the plate D. On the inner side of the door 0, near the bottom, is fastened a base-knob, G, to prevent the door striking the wall when the door is opened wide. This knob fastens a spring, F, to the door, which spring is curved, as shown, and passes under the lower edge of the door and bears against the strip D.
The spring F, when in its normal position, holds the strip or plate D sufficiently elevated to pass freely over the sill B. From the spring F projects downward a pin, a, which, as the door closes, enters a notch or recess, 1), in the sill B, and just before the door closes said pin is stopped in the recess to hold the spring stationary while the closing of the door is com- March 18, 1879.
pleted. This withdraws the spring F from the plate D and allows the same to drop down.
Just after the door commences to open, the spring is released by the pin passing out of the recess, and springs forward, elevating the plate D, so as to pass freely over the sill.
By placing the spring Fon the inside of the door, it can be detached or adjusted or replaced from the inside of the house, and without opening the door. The knob Gr also can be used to hold the upper portion of the same in position, and also the knob, projecting out beyond the spring, protects it when the door is closed. When the door is open it remains on that side of the door next to the wall, and is not liable to be struck and damaged, asit would he were it on the outside.
The plate D is to be used upon the outside of the door and held down by its own weight without interfering with the spring F.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The spring F, attached on the inside 0 the door (J, and passing under the lower edge thereof, in combination with the hinged plate D and a stop, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the door 0, of the hinged plate D, spring F, with pin a, and the sill B, having notch or recess 7), substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The spring F, secured by the knob G, and passing beneath the door, in combination with the pin a, a weather-strip, and stop, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The spring F, attached to the inside of the door, and passing under the same, in combination with pin a, door 0, knob G, sill B, hinged plate D, and inclined plate E, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRISON L. HYRE.
Witnesses SAMUEL A. STARK, ED. 0. ALTMAN.
