Patented Apr. 18, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention is used to hold merchandise for sale. It comprises a body and a casing enclosing the body. The invention aims to improve the construction of the body and the construction of the casing, the structure being such that even.
though the casing must be destroyed, the body can be used repeatedly. Another object of the invention is so to construct the body that it may be made of different thicknesses by increasing or diminishing the number of units in the body.
A preferred form has been shown, but a mechanic who keeps within the scope of the claim can change the selected form, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation;
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation;
Fig. 3 is an elevation on an enlarged scale, with parts broken away;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is an elevation showing part of the casing. In carrying out the invention, there is provided a body I, made of any material. The body has openings 2 for the reception of the merchandise to be dispensed. The openings 2 may be of any form, depending on the nature of the merchandise. In the drawing, the openings 2 have been shaped to receive safety razor blades, but openings of that shape are not mandatory. The body I may comprise a plurality of layers 3 secured together adhesively. The reason for having the layers 3 is that by using more or less of them, the thickness of the body may be changed to suit the merchandise. It is merely a case of securing more or less of the layers 3 together.
The body I is enclosed in a casing 4. The casing 4 is made up of front and back parts having edge flanges. In the front and back walls of the casing 4 there are openings 5. The openings 5 register with the openings 2 of the body I. Thin sheets of paper 6 or the like are secured to the inner surfaces of the Walls of the casing and close the openings 2, to keep the merchandise therein. The casing 4 is held about the body I by a circumferential binder 1, which may be a strip of adhesive paper secured to the flanges or edge walls of the casing 4.
In order to remove the merchandise, the operator punches through one of the openings 5 in the casing 4, and through the corresponding layer of paper 6, the merchandise being shoved out of the opening 2 in the body I through the opposite piece of paper 6 and through the adjacent openings 5 of the casing 4.
Among many advantages, two stand out promi- 5 nently. The casing 4, being made of a plurality of layers 3, may be of any desired thickness. After the layers of the paper 6 attached to the casing 4 have been punched away, the binder I may be broken or peeled off, and another casing 10 can be used on the same body.
The device is useful for containing merchandise and keeping it clean and sanitary. It may be used in connection with any chance system or plan of merchandise reward conforming to the 15 law of the place Where the device is used. The upper portion of the body I and of the casing 4 are imperforate, as shown at 8, and this space may be used for advertising material (not shown) What is claimed is: 20
In a device for dispensing merchandise, a body having merchandise openings, the body being made of a plurality of layers, to vary the thickness of the body and consequently to vary the length of the openings, a casing enclosing the 25 body and comprising separable parts, each of said parts including an outer wall and a flange extended entirely around the edge of the body, the inner edges of the flanges of the respective casing parts being spaced to permit the casing 30 parts to be adjusted toward and from each other to accommodate bodies of different thicknesses, the outer walls of the casing parts having openings registering with the openings of the body, penetrable members attached to the outer walls 5 of the casing parts and extended across the openings of the casing and across the openings of the body, the casing parts being removable from the body, after penetration, to permit the casing to be used with another body, constructed as de- 40 scribed, said penetrable members, after penetration, being removable with the respective casing parts, in attached relation thereto, and a binder extended entirely around the casing and adhesively engaged with the flanges, the binder hold- 45 ing the casing parts together about the body, and bridging the space between the inner edges of the flanges, the binder being separable or detachable, at the will of an operator.
