2 Claims.
The present invention relates to Window sash locks and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character adapted to lock both the upper end lower sliding sash of a Window against movement when either in a closed or partly open position.
A further object is to provide a sash lock embodying push button actuating means for operating the lock to a locking position and key controlled means for returning the lock to its unlocked or normal position.
Another object is to provide a sash lock mechanism embodying a toothed member attached to each of the sash and slidably mounted bolts carried by the Window frame and movable into and out of the path of said toothed members for securing the sash against movement in one direction, said toothed members being arranged to freely ride over the bolts during an opposite movement of the sash to permit uninterrupted movement of the sash in said opposite direction.
A still further object is to provide a sash lock embodying a main `double headed bolt for the respective upper and lower. sash operable in toothed channel members carried by the sash and said bolt and channel members cooperating to limit raising and lowering movement of the sash Within a predetermined range and said bolts further embodying auxiliary bolts movable with the main bolt as a unit and also movable independently of said main bolt and cooperating with the teeth of said channel members to se'- cure the sash against movement in one direction While permitting movement thereof in an opposite direction within the limits of movement controlled by said main bolt.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Fig. 1 is a vertical fragmentary sectional view through a pair of sash members showing the lock in position relative thereto,

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherei in for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the lower sash of a Window and 6 the upper sash, which are slidably mounted in channels I and 8 respectively of a window frame 9.
Along one side edge of each sash is secured a channel member I0 having its ends closed as at II and provided with teeth I2 along one longitudinal side edge.
A lock casing I3 is secured to the window frame, the outer surface of the lock being provided With a rib I4 in alinement with the parting strip I5 of the window frame and forming a continuation of said strip.V A
A spring retracted member It is slidably mounted in the casing, said member including a block I'l slidable on a pin I3 xed in a chamber I9 at the rear of the casing and upon which pin 9 is mounted a coil spring 29 for retracting the block inwardly of the casing. The outer end of the block is formed with a pair of main spaced bolts 2| movable into and out of position Within the respective channel members IIJ and in spaced relation from the opposite sides of the rib I4 whereby to engage the ends Il of the channel members to limit raising and lowering movements of the sash when the bolt is in a projected position.
A pair of auxiliary bolts 22 are also carried by the block I6, each of said auxiliary bolts embodying stems 23 slidable in openings 24 formed in the block and normally projected outwardly by springs 25. The auxiliary bolts are positioned laterally with respect to the main bolts ZI, as more clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and bridge the space between the main bolts 2| and the rib I4 at opposite sides of said rib. 'Ihe toothed edge I2 of the channel member is movable between one of the main bolts 2| and the adjacent side of the rib I4 for engagement by the auxiliary bolt 22, and it will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings that the teeth I2, having one edge horizontal as shown at 26, engaging said auxiliary bolt, will prevent movement of the sash in one direction, Whereas the opposite edge of the teeth are inclined as shown at 21 to enable the teeth to ride past the bolt to permit movement of the sash in an opposite direction within the limitation of the ends of the channel.
A lever 28 is pivotally mounted upon a pin 29 within the casing, one end of the lever being provided with a lateral extension 3U engaging the block I6 for projecting the bolt outwardly, the opposite end of the lever being engaged by a button 3| extending outwardly through an opening in the casing I3.
A locking plate 32 is slidably mounted in a guide 33 Within the casing, said locking plate being provided with a shoulder 34 against which a leaf spring 35 engages for yieldably urging the plate in a position for overlying the inner ends of the main bolts 2| to secure the bolts in projected position.
Key controlled means is provided for releasing the locking plate 32 and embodies a cam 36 on one edge of the plate 32 with which the key 31 inserted in the keyhole 38 is engageable. One or more key-controlled locking dogs 39 is also provided for securing the plate against releasing movement, each of said dogs being pivoted at one end on a pin 40 and having a shoulder 4| formed adjacent a slot 42 at its opposite end, said shoulder abutting a lug 43 projecting from the plate 32 to secure the plate against releasing movement. The shoulder is held in engagement with the lug by a leaf spring 44 having one end attached to the dog 39 and its opposite end bearing against one wall of the casing, One longitudinal edge of the dog is disposed in the path of the key 31, whereby upon the manipulation of the key in a direction as shown by the arrow in Fig. 5, the dog will be raised to release the shoulder 4| from engagement with the lug 43 and upon a continued movement of the key the lug 43 will enter this slot 42 during the releasing movement of the plate 32. The plate 32 is provided along one longitudinal edge with a notch 46 to accommodate the bolt 2| when the locking plate is released, whereupon the spring 20 will serve to retract the main and auxiliary bolts.
In the operation of the device with the bolt retracted the sashes Will be free to move to their full extent and upon depressing the button 3|, the bolts will be projected for engaging the channel member l0, the main bolts 2| being disposed in the path of the ends of the channel member to limit movement of the sash within a predetermined range and the teeth |2 engaging the auxiliary bolts 2 I, locking the sash against movement in one direction and by reason of the spring mounting of the auxiliary bolts the teeth will be ermitted to ride over the same to enable movement of the sash in an opposite direction Within the limitations of the channel member.
In order to prevent unauthorized removal of the lower sash 5 while the same is partly raised, which ordinarily could be accomplished by the removal of the molding strip 41, I provide a stop plate 48 secured to the frame in the channel 1 of the lower sash and having an angular outstanding flange 49 which overlies the front side of the sash, as shown in Fig. 3, and which prevents forcing the sash inwardly.
It is believed the details of construction and manner of operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without requiring further detailed explanation.
What I claim is:
l. A window sash lock for upper and lower sli-ding sashes, each having a channel member positioned in the guide channels of the window frame, each of said channel members being closed at each end and having a toothed longitudinal edge, said sash lock comprising a lock mechanism attached to the frame and embodying a pair of spring retracted main bolts movable into and out of said channel members and engageable with the ends of said members to limit movement of the sash, spring mounted auxiliary bolts extending laterally from the main bolts and movable With the main bolts as a unit, said auxiliary bolts being disposed in the path of the toothed edge of said channel members for securing the sash against movement in one direction within the limitations of said channel members, spring actuated bolt locking means normally held in one position by the retracted bolts and operable to releasably secure the bolts in projected position, a manually depressible member operatively engaged with the main bolts for projecting the same, and key manipulated means for releasing the bolt locking means.

In a window sash lock for upper and lower sashes, a channel member positioned in the guidev channels of the window frame, each of said channel members being closed at each end and having a toothed longitudinal edge, said sash lock comprising a lock mechanism attached to the Window frame and embodying a pair of spring retracted main bolts movable into and out of said channel members and engageable with the ends of said members to limit movement of the sash, auxiliary bolts disposed laterally of the main bolts yieldingly mounted for movement in one direction independently of the main bolts and movable with the main bolts as a unit, said auxiliary bolts being disposed in the path of the toothed edge of said channel members for securing the sash against movement in one direction within the limitations of said channel members, and yieldably movable to permit movement of the sash in the opposite direction without movement of the main bolts from projected position, means for moving the main bolts to projected position, means for locking the main bolts projected, and key manipulated means for releasing the bolt locking means,
