Description
M. MAI ER. Combined Corner-Iron and Trunk-Hinge.
No. 214,932. Patented April 29,1879.
".FETERS. PHOfO-UTHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN MAIER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CORNER-IRON AND TRUNK-HINGE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,932, dated April 29, 1879; application filed October 5, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN MAIER, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented anlmprovement in Trunk-Hinge and Corner-Iron, of which the following is aspecification.
The nature of my invention relates to new. and useful improvements in the construction of corner-irons, hinges, and stays or braces for trunks combined; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, wherein will be found simplicity, cheapness, and strength, combined with an easy adjustment not usually found in such devices, the parts being constructed and arranged to operate as more fully hereinafter set forth and described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device from the inside as in use, and when the top of the trunk is open Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section through the center of the connection between the two parts. Fig. 3 is a rear perspective of the two parts detached. Fig. 4 is a like View of the two parts attached together as, in use, and when the top of the trunk is closed down upon the body thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a corner-iron designed to be secured to the top and rear corner of a trunk-bod y, the top of the iron and trunk-body being on the same plane. The top of the iron is cut away, forming two recesses, a. a, between which is the hook b, the top of which is-upon the same plane with the top of the iron. At the base of this hook the iron is thickened on the outside, and the hook springs from the top of this projection 0 upwardly and inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, the upper inner end of said hook terminating on the same vertical plane with the inner face of that part of the corner-iron.
B represents a corner-iron designed to be secured to the lower rear corner of the trunktop, the lower edges of said top and corneriron being on the same plane. From the lower face of this iron there projects downward the eye d, its base slightly offsetting from the inner face of the iron, while the outer face of the eye is in the same vertical plane with the outer face of said iron. Immediately above the base of the hook the iron is thickened outwardly, forming a projection, e, terminating in a shoulder, c.
In practice the part B is secured to its position as described, and the top of the trunk is then placed in position on top of the body. The part- A is secured to the body as described, so that the hook I) engages with the eye 0?, inclosing the same on all sides, except the front, which is inclosed by the body-wall, and thus the parts are prevented from becoming detached, except by theremoval ot the part B.
I am aware that there are in use and patented several descriptions of corner irons, hinges, and stays combined, and I disclaim any part of such devices as so employed; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A trunk-hinge consisting of the part A, provided with recesses a a, hook I), and pro: jection c, and the part B, provided with eye 01 and shoulder 0', said parts constructed and 0p eratin g substantially as shown and described.
MARTIN MAIER.
