This invention relates to improvements in hair curls and more particularly to a new and improved device useful in the curling of hair for facilitating positioning of a bobble pin on a hair 5 curl.

One of the important dimculties in hair curling procedure as presently practiced is that insertion of the bobbie pin around the loops of a hair curl frequently causes movement in position of the loops of hair and accordingly, the resultant curl is frequently unsatisfactory, if not unsightly in appearance. The difficulty in positioning the bobbie pin on the curl results from engagement of the shorter or crinkled portion of the bobble pin with interior portions of the hair curl, whereby certain loops of hair forming the curl are moved out of proper position.

It is among the more important objects of the present invention to provide means for facilitatlili whereby the crinkled shorter arm of the bobble pin is guided within the hair curl in a manner precluding engagementof the crinkled portion of the bobble pin with interior parts of the curl prior to removal of the curl from the device.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a device comprising in combination, a curl bobbin andan arm cooperating with said bobbin tor facilitating a hair curl in position thereof.

An important advantage of the novel p1 curler and bobble pin positioning device according to the instant invention is that it permits formation of curls very close to the scalp and positioning of a bobble pin on the side of the curl next adjacent the scalp whereby coidures of novel appearance can be produced.

Among the features of the device according to the present invention are the simplicity of the parts thereof, the ease with which the elements can be assembled to form the device, and the ruggedness or the resultant device whereby economies during manufacture and. assembly are facilitated and longevity of useful life of the device is at least largely promoted.

Other objects, advantages and features of the device according to the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art during the course of the following description.

Regarded in certain of its broader aspects, the present invention comprises a hair curling device including a hollow bobbin, a spring pressed arm s'lidingly mounted on said bobbin adapted to being positioned upon a portion of a curl wound on .55 said bobbin, a retractable bobble pin holder axialing insertionof bobble pins in looped hair curls;

1y slidingly mounted within said bobbin and means for simultaneously positioning a bobble pin carried on said holder upon a hair curl wound on said bobbin while said arm is moved irom said curl. 5

In order to facilitate a fuller and more complete understanding of the present invention, a specific embodiment thereof will be hereinafter described, it being clearly understood, however, that the illustrated embodiment is given solely by 10 way of example and is non-limitative upon the scope of the present invention, except as expressed in the subjoined claims.

Referring then to the drawing:

Figure 'l is substantially a side elevational view iii of the now preferred embodiment 'of the instant invention, showing same with a bobbie pin in position in the pin holder thereof and with a hair curl wound upon the bobbin.

Referring now particularly to Figures 1 and 3, it will be noted that the device comprises a hollow substantially cylindrical member ill, one por-- tion of which generally designated by the numeral it, provides a bobbin and the other portion of 35 which generally designated by the numeral l2, providing a handle. The end part of the portion it carries a cap it having knurled sides for facilitating rotation of the member ill as will be hereinafter described.

A longitudinal slot-like opening it is formed in the portion it of the member it and extends from an intermediate part of said member to the end thereof normally closed by the cap it.

An annular member it having upstanding 5 flanged end parts it is slidingly mounted on exterior parts of the cylindrical member it and includes a radially extending stop it extending through the slot-like opening it in the member it whereby the sliding movement of the annular 50 member Iii with respect to the bobbin portion ii of the member it is restricted. An arm l9 carried on the pivot 20 mounted in standards El and 22 formed on the annular member l5 is normally spring against the bobbin portion ll of the member III by means including the spring 23 mounted on the pivot 20 substantially as shown in Figures 3 and 5.

It is to be noted that the arm I9 is substantially co-extensive with the bobbin portion ll of [I the member [0 and is adapted to 'press against an end portion of a strand of hair positioned on the bobbin for winding a curl thereon substantially as shown in Figure 1. It will be noted that the arm I! is provided with a handle portion 25 for facilitating movement thereof on the pivot 20.

A freely rotatable rod 21 positioned within the cylindrical member I0 is provided with an annular groove formation 28 near an end portion thereof adapted to receive and engage with the stop I! carried on the annulus I5, whereby sliding movement of the annulus results in sliding movement of the rod, although rotative motion of the rod with respect to theannulus is not inhibited. An end portion of the rod 21 projects through the open end of the member ID nearest the bobbin portion thereof and carries an arm generally designated by the numeral 30, which is movable into fully extended position by positioning the annular member l5 against the end portion of the slot 14 formed in the member l0 substantially as shown in Figures 1 and 3. The arm 30 comprises a shorter channeled portion 3| for receiving the crinkled end part 32 of the bobbie pin 33 and a bifurcated projecting arm 34 adapted to engage with the straight arm 35 of the bobble pin 33 substantially as shown in Figures 1 and 3. It is to be noted that the shorter portion 3| of the arm 30 is channeled to receive the bent-up end part of the crinkled portion of the bobble pin whereby the pin is disposed obliquely relative to the arm 30 and that the arms of the pin separated relative to each other substantially as shown.

In use, the end part of a strand of hair is placed against the bobbin portion l I of the cylindrical member In beneath the spring pressed arm I 3 and the member I 0 rotated whereby a hair curl is formed thereon substantially as shown in Figure 1. Winding of the curl on the bobbin is facilitated by gripping the knurled handle l3 and the projecting arm 30 carrying the bobbie pin 33. When the curl has been formed on the bobbin, the annulus I5 is moved toward the knurled handle l3 whereby the sliding rod 21 is retracted within the bobbin and the pin 33 positioned with the straight arm 35 thereof resting upon the curl substantially as shown in Figure 2. The curl of hair is then removed from the bobbin by sliding motion thereof and the operation is thus completed. It is to be noted that the crinkled part 32 of the bobble pin 33*is positioned within the curl by the hereinbefore described operations of the device according to the present invention. It is also to be noted that the bobbie pin 33, although initially held obliquely relative to the axis of the bobbin, is moved into substantial parallelism relative to the axis of the bobbin by retraction of the sliding rod removing the bobbie pin, whereby accidental or undesired engagement of loops of hair forming the curl with the portion 35 of the bobble pin 33, is at least largely precluded.

It is to be understood that this improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therein as do not aifect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims.

What is claimed as new is:

l. A hair curling device of the type described comprising a hollow cylindrical member providing, near one end thereof, a handle element, and, near the opposite end thereof, a bobbin; an axially sliding annulus mounted on said member between the handle and bobbin portions thereof; and means for holding a bobbie pin for engagement with a hair curl wound on said bobbin, said means comprising a freely rotatable rod, slidingly mounted within said hollow member, connected to and movable with said annulus, and a retractable projecting formation carried on one end of said rod for holding a bobbie pin disposed obliquely relative to the axis of rotation of said cylindrical member.

A hair curling device of the type described comprising a hollow cylindrical member providing, near one end thereof, a handle element, and near the opposite end, a bobbin; an axially sliding annulus mounted on said member between the handle and bobbin portions thereof; and means for holding a-bobbie pin for engagement with a hair curl wound on said bobbin, said means comprising a freely rotatable rod, slidingly mounted within said hollow member, connected to and movable with said annulus, a retractable projecting formation, carried on one end of said rod, extending axially from the interior of the bobbin portion of said cylindrical member, said formation including a channeled member for receiving and engaging with a bent end portion of a bobbie pin, and a bifurcated member engaging with other parts of said pin whereby the bobbie pin is carried on said formation disposed obliquely relative to the axis of rotation of,said cylindrical member.

A hair curling device of the .type described comprising a hollow cylindrical member providing, near one .end thereof, a handle element, and, near the opposite end, a bobbin; an axially sliding annulus mounted on said member between the handle and bobbin portions thereof; a springpressed arm, pivotally mounted on portions of said annulus, extending over, pressing against and substantially conforming in shape with said bobbin for engaging with and holding an end portion of a strand of hair; and means for holding a bobbie pin for engagement with a hair curl wound on said bobbin, said means comprising a freely rotatable rod, slidingly mounted within said hollow member, connected to and movable with said annulus, a retractable projecting formation, carried on one end of said rod, extending axially from the interior of the bobbin portion of said cylindrical member, said formation including a channeled member for receiving and engaging with a bent end portion of a bobbie pin, and a bifurcated member engaging with other parts of said pin whereby the bobbie pin is carried on said formation disposed obliquely relative to the axis of rotation of said cylindrical member.
