This invention relates to an article of jewelry which has separable parts, and particularly to a brooch comprising a plurality of clips mounted on a frame part and detachably secured thereto.

An object of the invention is to provide simple and eiiective means for securing a plurality of clips to a frame member which will be effective regardless of the relative size or width of the clip and the frame whereby a variety of sizes may be attached to the same frame member.

Another object of the invention is to provide a locking device which will lock out of working position so that the locking device will positively not interfere when the parts are assembled but may thereafter be moved to securing position.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective locating means which will serve in cooperation with the locking device to hold the parts firmly and securely together against movement.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the use of separable articles of jewelry, particularly brooch clips, the separable articles to be used together must be attached in some convenient manner, and different ways have been provided which require that the size of the parts be of a certain definite proportion in order to lock together; and it frequently occurs that various sizes are desired requiring for each size a complete set of parts, and in order to provide a single frame which will take all sizes, I have provided a locking arrangement enabling the clip to be placed upon the face of the frame centered with reference thereto and locked in position without regard to the width of the ornament which may be mounted on the clip; and I have also arranged that the lock may be iirmly held in either locked or released position, thus assuring that the lock will be open when positioned on the frame to simplify the assembly of the parts; and the following is a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:

With reference to the drawing, l designates a frame which is of somewhat open work structure with piercings Il and I2 toV lighten its weight and provide in a general way ornamentation as well as to provide certain functional parts. A pin I9 is hinged as at 2i] on the frame and provided with a safety `catch 2l for mounting the frame in position on the costume of the user. Arms I3 separated by a slit la extend longitudinally of the frame and there is provided between them an opening I following generally the configuration of a figure 8, having two generally arcuate portions I6 with a protuberance i'i between them. The frame also has raised projections I8 struck up from the stock serving as centralizing means, as' will presently be described.

The clips which form the separate parts of the article of jewelry consist of a pair of ornaments 25 serving as front jaws with a back jaw 26 for each ornament hinged to a mounting member portion 21 which is soldered to the ornament. The hinge connection comprises trunnions 28 on the back jaw fitting. in ears 29 on the mounting member and provided with a spring 30 located between the ears and engaging some ange or protuberance 3l on the back jaw for swinging the back jaw around the trunnions 2B as a pivot to closed position. The usual spurs 32 are provided on. this back jaw to engage the garment to which they may be attached, these clips being capable of separate use upon the costume.

The back jaws of each slip are each provided with cut-out formation 33 having a large opening 34 and smaller openings 35. The large opening all is surrounded by a circular portion 36 while the smaller openings are surrounded by circular portions 31 of the stock.

In assembling the two clips their back jaws are placed upon the front face of the frame which is of such an arrangement that the protuberances i3 will extend into the openings 35 to positively position the back jaws on the frame and locate them in desired position longitudinally of the device, also centrally of the longitudinal line of the device and usually with their straight edges il abutting. The width, however, of the clips is immaterial as they are positioned on the front face of the frame and there is nothing to interi'ere with or limit their extent laterally.

In order to secure the clips in position, a locking means comprising a stud member 38 having a head 39 and a shank portion 40 is slidably mounted on the frame. The head has beneath it a spacing shoulder 4I of the thickness of the frame IU and a further reduction in size forms a slide portion 42 which ts Within the slot I5. Upon the reduced shank 40 of the locking member, there is provided a head 43 which has a recess 44 flared to receive the headed over portion 45 of the shank, This head ts within the recess 44 so as to be substantially ush therewith and not protrude to catch in any of the clothing of the user. This stud may be moved in the slot I5 to either arcuate end thereof by snapping by the protuberance I'I by a flexing of the arms I3 so that the stud is locked at one or the other end of the slot.

When locked in released position by reason of its engaging the inner arcuate portion I6 of the slot I5 the locking member freely passes through the opening 34 in the back jaw of the clip at the time that the protuberances I8 enter the recesses or openings 35 of the clip, then by engaging the head 43 of the locking member and forcing it outwardly beyond the projection I'I which is permitted by the springing arms I3, the head 39 extends vover the stock of the circular portion 36 to lock the clip rmly on the frame in assembled position, the portion I7 serving to retain it in this position until it is desired to release the members. For such release, the head 43 is again engaged and slid inwardly whereupon the parts may be separated or will fall apart if inverted, and the locking member will be positively held in position to again receive the clips when the parts are desired to be assembled.

The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being dened and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

I claim:

l. An article of jewelry comprising separable members, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, and locking means slidably carried by one of said members adapted for movement thereon to and from locking engagement with the other member to fasten said members together.

2. An article of jewelry comprising separable members, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, locking means slidably carried by one of' said members adapted for movement thereon to and from locking engagement with the other member to fasten said members together, and resilient means adapted to hold the locking means either in or out of locking position.

3. An article of jewelry comprising separable members, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, a large opening in one member, a slot in the other member, a locking means slidably mounted in the slot on the other member having a head to extend through said opening and movable over the opposite surface of the member assembled thereon to lock the members together upon sliding movement of said locking means in said slot.

An article of jewelry comprising separable members, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, a large opening in one member, a slot in the other member, a locking means slidably mounted in the slot on the other member having a head to extend through said slot and movable over the opposite surface of the member assembled thereon to lock the members together upon sliding movement of said locking means in said slot, and resilient means adapted to hold the locking means either in or out of locking position.

5. A brooch clip comprising a frame member, a clip having a back jaw member engageable with the frame member, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, locking means slidably carried by said frame member adapted for movement thereon to and from locking engagement with a portion of the clip member to releasably fasten the members together.

6. A brooch clip comprising a frame member, a clip having a back jaw member engageable with the front of the frame member, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, comprising portions raised on one member and recesses in the other member to receive them, locking means slidably carried by said frame member adapted for movement thereon to and from locking engagement with a portion of the clip member to releasably fasten the members together.

7. A brooch clip comp-rising a slotted frame member, a clip having a back jaw member engageable with the frame member and provided with a large opening, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, and a locking means slidably mounted in the slot in said frame member having a head to extend through said opening and movable over the opposite surface of the clip member assembled thereon to lock the members together upon sliding movement of said locking means in said slot.

8. A brooch clip comprising a frame member, a clip having a back jaw member engageable with the frame member, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, locking means slidably carried by said frame member adapted for movement thereon to and from locking engagement with a portion of the other member to releasably fasten the members together, and resilient means to hold the locking means either in or out of locking position.

9. A brooch clip comprising a frame member, a clip having a back jaw member engageable with the front of the frame member, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, comprising portions raised on one member and recesses in the other member to receive them, locking means slidably carried by said frame member adapted for movement thereon to and from locking engagement with a portion of the other member to releasably fasten the members together, and resilient means to hold the locking means either in or out of locking position.

10. A brooch clip comprising a slotted frame member, a clip having a back jaw member engageable with the frame member and provided with a large circular opening, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, and a locking means slidably mounted in the slot in said frame member having a head to extend through said opening and movable over the opposite surface of the clip member assembled thereon to lock the members together upon sliding movement of said locking means to one end of said slot, and resilient means to hold the locking means in locking position.

11. A brooch clip comprising a slotted frame member, a clip having a back jaw member engageable with the frame member and provided with a large circular opening, cooperating means on said members to relatively locate the members, a locking means slidably mounted in the slot in said frame member having a head to the opposite surface of the member assembled thereon to lock the members together upon sliding movement of said locking means to one end of said sl0t,. and resilient means to hold the locking means either in or out of locking position, said slot having arcuate end portions and a protuberance intermediate thereof whereby the locking means may be locked at one or the other end of the slot by snapping by said protuberancey by a flexing of said resilient means.
