UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ALBERTH ROSENBLU'TH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATS AND CAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent NO. 214,458, dated April 15, 1879; application filed March 5, 1879.
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats and Caps, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a hat, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of a cap, made according to my improved method.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish for workmen, for bathing purposes, and for general summer wear, an improved hat and cap that combines lightness and easy fit with the advantage of absorbing the perspiration, so that it may be worn with comfort during the warm season; and the invention consists of a hat or cap made of mushroom-sponge, which is cut, blocked, and trimmed in proper manner.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a hat or cap of any suitable shape or construction, which is made of mushroom sponge. This sponge is aparasitical fungus that grows in abundance in Europe, and is prepared by being boiled in water, dried, and beaten, forming, finally, a light yet tough sheet, of light leather color and of high absorptive quality. This mushroom-sponge may be obtained in large quantities and sizes, its main application heretofore having been to manufacture black-match or tinder therefrom by preparing it witha strong saltpeter lye. The mushroom-sponge is smooth on one side and rough on the other, the latter surface absorbing quickly the moisture.
A hat or cap made therefrom is light, adapts itself readily to the head of the wearer, and absorbs the perspiration. It may, therefore, be advantageously worn in summer by workmen and others, or as a bathing-hat, 850., its cheapness facilitating its introduction.
The hat or cap may be made of one continuous piece, cut to the proper size, and then blocked into shape; or it may be made of several pieces, as desired. After blocking, the hat or cap is provided at the edge of the brim with a suitable binding, B, to protect the edge against tearing.
A hat or cap of this sponge forms a pleasant and comfortable covering for the head, as it keeps the same cool by absorbing the perspiration.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- 1. As a new article of manufacture, ahat or cap made from mushroom sponge, substantially as set forth.
2. A hat or cap made from a continuous piece of m ushroom-sponge, substantially as set forth.
3. A hat or cap made of mnshroonrsponge, and provided at the edge with a protective binding, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two Witnesses, this 4th day of March, 1879.
ALBERTH ROSENBLUTH.
