Description

- S. K. TROELIOHT.
\ Head-Muffler.
" No. 214.326. Patented April 15, 1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYBILLA TROELIGHT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-MUFFLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,326, dated April 15, 1879; application filed February 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, SYBILLA K. TROELICHT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Head-Mufflers; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a covering for the head, neck, and face in severe cold weather; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the mufile, made of knitted woolen yarn, closely fitting over the head and neck, down upon the shoulders, embracing the forehead,
. ears, and chin, and provided with aflap, which can be placed over the nose and buttoned, so as to expose only the eyes and mouth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents my muffle as worn by a man, with the nose-covering flap turned away and folded under the muflle. Fig. 2 represents the same with the flap turned over the nose, and Fig. 3 represen ts a horizontal section imagined to be taken through the head and the surrounding muffle.
Like letters in the several figures of the drawings refer to like parts.
A is the head. portion of the mufflegmade as near as possible in conformity with the shape of the head, and so that it will cover the forehead, chin, cheeks, ears, and neck, leaving an opening in front for the middle of the face.
This muffle is made of woolen yarn, knitted with downward ribs, by which a sufficient elasticity is obtained for pulling the muffle over the head, and yet insure a close fit. The
neck portion of this muffle is jointed to a ringshaped collar, B, knitted with annular ribs and adapted to cover the shoulders.
O is a flap secured to one edge of the faceopening, and arranged to be buttoned to the opposite edge of said face-opening. This flap (J is shaped to cover the nose and central portion of the face, only leaving the eyes and mouth exposed; and when not cold enough for its application, it can be turned away from the face and folded under the side of the headmuffle. I
This muffle may be made to suit different people, as they may prefer their face to be protected more or less, by leaving off the noseflap. or by shortening the chin or forehead portion, and also by omitting the collar portion; and where a party desires to have the eyes protected also in cold weather, a small frame with glasses can be attached to the forehead portion of the muffle, so as to be suspended over the eyes.
The above-described head-muffle will prove a very convenient protection for people having outdoor duties to performas for police officers, drivers, conductors, letter-carriers, and the like, and, while entering the house, it is easily taken off, and can be carried in the pocket, to be replaced again instantly, and a hat or cap can be worn over it without interfering therewith.
What I claim as my invention is A muffle for the head, composed of knit or woven fabric, ribbed longitudinally, provided with an opening for the center of the face and a neck and shoulder cover, substantially as described.
