Description
Jan. 10, 1939. A G. GRONDAHL ANT IWINDOW-RATTLE DEVICE Filed July 26, 1957 Patented Jan. 10, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to devices for preventing windows from rattling.
Generally stated, the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction and arrangement whereby, when it is desired to stop the rattling of a window, a spring is effective to force a wedge-shaped member between the sash and the guide-strip on the window frame, thereby preventing any rattling of the sash in the window structure.
It is also an object to provide certain details and features of construction tending to increase the general efficiency and desirability of a window rattling preventing device of this particular character.
To the foregoing and other useful ends, the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective of a portion of a window provided with a device embodying the principles of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of said device, on a larger scale, showing adjacent portions of the window structure.
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2, showing the parts in a different position.
Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section on line 4-4 in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
Fig. 5 is a perspective of certain portions of the device, in separated condition.
As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a metal plate I, having ears 2 and 2, by which it is fastened to the sash 3, in the manner shown. This plate is provided with horizontal portions 4, having slots 5 therein. A spring trigger 6 is suitably fastened to the said plate, or may be formed integral therewith.
The wedge l is provided with a stem 8 that 40 slides in the opening 9 of thebracket-plate, and said wedge is also provided with upper and lower pins Iii that move back and forth in the slots 5, previously mentioned. A coil spring I l is mounted on the stem 8, and is thereby arranged for compression between the base of the wedge l and the wall 12 ,of the bracket-plate.
With the parts as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the said spring H is under compression, inasmuch as the trigger 6 is in engagement with 50 the upper end of the pin Ill, thereby holding the wedge l in its retracted position. This can be done by pulling on the outer end of the stem 8, until the part 6 engages the pin ID, as shown in Fig. 2, in a manner that will be readily under- 55 stood. This is the normal condition of the device.
Should the sash 3 begin to rattle, in the window frame, the trigger 6 can be pulled upwardly, as it is formed from a resilient or flexible strip of metal, and this will disengage the upper pin l0, thereby permitting the wedge 1 to enter between the sash 3 and the guide strip 13 of the window frame, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing. As the wedge is under constant spring pressure, it follows that the wedge will automatically enter a little farther, should any rattling or looseness develop after the wedge has been re- 0 leased by the spring trigger.
It will be seen that the invention thus contemplates a sheet metal bracket plate provided with a retaining portion, preferably integral therewith, for retaining the wedge in retracted position, in 15 combination with a pulling stem and a spring for actuating the wedge into operative position between the sash and the frame of the window. Any expedient, of course, can be employed for releasing the wedge from its retracted position, so 20 that the spring will then be free to force the wedge into its said operative position.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A device for preventing rattling of a window sash in its frame, comprising a sheet metal 95 bracket plate on the inner face of the sash, a wedge mounted to slide on said plate, in a vertical plane parallel with the plane of the sash, for insertion between the sash and frame of the window, said plate having a retaining portion for 30 holding the wedge in retracted position, means rigid with the wedge for engaging said retaining portion, and a spring for forcing the wedge into position, when released from said retaining portion. 5
2. A structure as specified in claim 1, having a stem for said wedge, said retaining portion being a portion of a guide, formed by a portion of the plate, for said stem, which guide is transverse of said plane. 40
3. A structure as specified in claim 1, having a stem for said wedge, said retaining portion being integral with a guide for said stem, which guide is transverse of said plane.
4. A device for preventing rattling of a window sash in its frame, comprising a sheet metal bracket plate, a wedge mounted to slide on said plate, for insertion between the sash and frame, said plate having a retaining portion for holding the wedge in retracted position, a stem for pulling said wedge out of engagement, into said retracted position, and a spring on the stem for forcing the wedge into position, when released from said retaining portion, said retaining portion being integral with a guide for said stem.
