The invention relates to a typers stand and more especially to a copy holder or typewriter easel.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein copy work can be conveniently held and such device is susceptible of adjustment so that it will accommodate different sizes of work and hold the same in a position for the easy reading of matter, the device being novel in its entirety.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the construction thereof allows the collapsing or folding of the same when not in use so that it will occupy the least possible space when stored or otherwise placed during disuse thereof.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the same has in association therewith weight mem bers which assures steadiness to the device when set up for use and such device in this condition will be rigid, holding copy matter properly for convenience to a typist.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and effective in operation, easy of adjustment, readily and conveniently collapsed or folded, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the device constituting the present invention is a typers stand or copy work holder, comprising a clamping base formed from sheet metal although it may be made from any other suitable material cut and bent on itself to provide a channeled body I0 having at its rear wall a downwardly directed rear supporting flange effecting a leg I I while out and bent from the bottom of the said body are down-turned front supports or legs I2, these cooperating with the rear flange or leg II for supporting the body I0 slightly elevated from a rest therefor.

Above this channeled body I 0, which is the base member of the device, is a vertically movable clamping head in the form of a flat bar I3, preferably made from metal although it may be made from any other material, and between the latter and the said channeled body I0 is a lazy tongs I4, the end levers of the same being pivoted at I5 and slidably connected at I6, respectively, to the said body and bar, so that the bar I3 can be adjusted or moved relative to the body I0 in the racking of copy work in the device. Both the body I0 and the bar I3 at the point of slidable connection at I6 are slotted as at I1, the extent of these being such as to allow the extension and contraction of the lazy tongs I 4 for the collapsing or folding of the device and also for the proper adjustment within reason of the bar I3 relative to the body I0.

The bar I3 has projected forwardly therefrom and integrally formed with the same a pair of spaced clamping yokes I8, these being fitted with set or binding screws I9 having their ends confronting the bar I3 rubber tipped as at 20. The body I0 at the front wall thereof has fitted therein spaced clamping or set screws 2| which are identical to the screws I9 and carry the rubber tips 22 in confronting relation to the back wall of said body I 0, these set or binding screws being for the purpose of clamping and holding copy work within the device. The lowermost portion of the work is received in the channeled body I0 while the upper portion of such work is accommodated within the said yokes.

Cut and bent from the flange I I are rearwardly directed spaced ears 23, these being pivot bearings for pivots 24 swingingly connecting thereto a pair of weight arms 25, which are adapted for swinging movement and for rest upon a support carrying the device, the purpose of these arms 25 being for maintaining steadiness to the device when set up for use to avoid toppling over or otherwise displacement of the same. The arms 25 are formed with forked outer ends 26 carrying pivots 21 swingingly connecting thereto break jointed props 28, the break joint of each being indicated at 29, and each prop is suitably notched at 3B for adjustable connection with a keeper rod 3|, being selectively engageable in the notches 30. This rod 3| is fitted in hanger ears 32 bent outwardly from the bar |3 at opposite ends and in a rearward direction thereto. Thus by the use of the props 28, the device is susceptible for latching in an extended or contracted position within reasonable limits and the extension and contraction is had through the lazy tongs I4 thus shifting the bar |3 relative to the channeled body Ill.

The props 28, by reason of the break joints 29, which break inwardly or in the direction of the lazy tongs Hi, can be readily moved between the bar l3 and the keeper rod 3| so as to enable the selective engagement of this rod 3| within the notches 3|! in said props, the latter being spaced 2. determined distance from each other and in this fashion the extent of adjustment of the device is attained.

The rubber tips 20 and 22 on the screws l9 and 2|, respectively, avoid any disfiguring of the work clamped within the device or in the marring of such work when so clamped.

The break joint in the prop 28 is of a kind to assure frictional holding at said joints.

The arms 25 can be readily swung upwardly and inwardly against the rear flange H of the body I!) when the props 2B are disengaged from the rod 3| and such props will be carried between the bar l3 and the rod 3| for contracting the device when the lazy tongs I4 have been contracted so that such device in this collapsed or folded condition can be conveniently stored in the least possible space when not in use.

The props 28 when engaged with the keeper rod 3| hold the lazy tongs H in a substantially upright position and the copy work will be held in a manner for convenience to a typist or other person conveniently for copying purposes.

The rear wall of the body has a fold 33 therein and the pivot connection l5 and slidable connection l6 are retained in this fold 33 as the headed ends 34 are confined within the fold.

The screws |9 and 2| are disposed forwardly of the body Ill and the bar l3, being convenient for ready manipulation for the clamping and unclamping of work within these parts of the device. The work will be sustained smooth and flat and in clearly visible position for copying purposes. The device in its assembly can be placed at rest upon any suitable support such as a table, desk or the like when in a setup condition.

What is claimed is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a clamping base having a channeled body provided with front and rear depending supports, a movable bar-like head piece above said base, lazy tongs having connection with the base and head piece for relative adjustment of the latter with respect to said base, clamping yokes formed with the head piece, binding screws in said yokes and channeled base for clamping of work therein, arms fitted with said base, and props associated with the arms and adjustably engageable with the head piece.

2. A device of the character described comprising a clamping base having a channeled body provided with front and rear depending supports, a movable bar-like head piece above said base, lazy tongs having connection with the base and head piece for relative adjustment of the latter with respect to said base, clamping yokes formed with the head piece, binding screws in said yokes and channeled base for clamping of work therein, arms fitted with said base, props associated with the arms and adjustably engageable with the head piece, and break joints formed in said props.

3. A device of the character described comprising a clamping base having a channeled body provided with front and rear depending supports,

a movable bar-like head piece above said base, lazy tongs having connection With the base and head piece for relative adjustment of the latter with respect to said base, clamping yokes formed with the head piece, binding screws in said yokes and channeled base for clamping of work therein, arms fitted with said base, props associated with the arms and adjustably engageable with the head piece, break joints formed in said props, and a keeper rod fitted with the head piece and selectively engageable with the props.
