Description
Dec. 13, 1938. R. DREHER COMBINATION GOMB CASE ANDTCLEANER Filedl March 1, 1957 BY mwf@ HIS ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 13, 1938A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
My invention relates to comb cases and includes among its objects and advantages the provision of an improved comb cleaner incorporated with the case in a novel manner.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a comb case embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional View along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the line 3--3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the comb case opened to show the relation of all the parts; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of a different form of comb brush.
In the embodiment selected to illustrate my invention I make use of a comb case ID having an open end 2 for the reception of a comb, not shown. Fig. 4 illustrates the specific construction of the comb casein which the side I4 of the case includes a iiap I6 which defines the other side and includes a tab I8 which may be folded over the comb cleaning brush 20.
To the inner face of the side I4 I connect a stilfening strip 22 which may be glued to the side and which is co-extensive in length therewith. The flap I6 is folded back upon the side I4 along the line 24, and the two sides are stitched together, as at 2S. The brush 20 comprises bristle tufts 28 anchored in a retaining strip 30 which is glued to the stiffening strip 22 and the inner face of the iiap I at their ends adjacent the tab I8. On one face of the tab I8 I glue two stiifening strips 32 and 34 which are arranged in parallel but spaced relation, as at 36. One edge of the strip 32 is arranged substantially in contact with one end of the stiifening strip 22 while its opposite edge is positioned slightly beyond the free ends of the tufts 28. Tab IS may be folded back upon itself to bring the strips 32 and 34 into pressure relation with opposite sides of the bristle tufts 28, at which time one end of the strip 34 is arranged in contact with one end of the flap I6, as at 38 in Fig. 2. In spacing the strips 32 and 34, the tab I8 may be bent freely along the lines of the space 3E. Strip 32 could constitute an extension of the stiffening strip 22, but in separating the two parts, the tab I8 may be more easily bent back upon the side I4 for exposing the tufts 28 for brushing purposes.
I slot the ap I6 at 4I! and pass the ends of a leather or fabric strip 42 through the slots and glue the end margins of the strip to the inner face of the flap I I. ,The reach 44 of the strip 42 is positioned exteriorly of the flap I6 and cooperates (Cl. 20G-317) therewith to providea holding function for the neck 46 of the tab I 8. In other words, the neck 48 is inserted between the reach 44 and the flap I6.
In Fig. 2, the retaining strip 30 constitutes a closure for one end of the case. The comb is inserted in the case through the open end I2. In operation, the tab I8 is folded back upon the side I4, at which time the bristle tufts 28 are exposed. The comb case is then utilized as a handle for manipulating the brush. The bristles pass freely between the teeth of the comb and perform an efficient cleaning action thereon. With the tab I8 folded back upon the bristles according to Fig. 2 the bristles are protected against bending, as when carried in the pocket. When the tab I8 is folded back upon the side I4 and pressed firmly thereagainst, the forces are so distributed as to reinforce the case and. lend rigidity thereto, thus facilitating manipulation of the bristles.
Fig. 5 illustrates a slightly different form of construction in which wires 48 are anchored in a retaining strip 50 corresponding to the strip 30. 'I'he retaining strip 50 may be associated with a comb case in the same way as the strip 30. In cases where wires 48 are employed the stiffening strips 32 and 34 provide an effective enclosure for the wires so that the case may be safely carried on the person.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain my invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service.
I claim:
1. A comb case comprising a sheet of material shaped to provide two sides and a tab, a brush secured between the two sides at one end thereof and having bristles projecting beyond the end of the case, a tab comprising an integral extension of one of said sides and arranged to be folded back upon itself for enclosing the brush.
2. A comb case comprising a sheet of material shaped to provide two sides and a tab, a brush secured between the two sides at one end thereof and having bristles projecting beyond the end. of the case, a tab comprising an integral extension of one of said sides and arranged to be folded back upon itself for enclosing the brush, and stiifening strips carried by said tab and arranged to have pressure relation with the brush in the folded position of the tab.
3. A comb case comprising a sheet of material shaped to provide two sides and a tab, a brush secured between the two sides at one end thereof and having bristles projecting beyond the end of the case, a tab comprising an integral extension 4. A comb case comprising a sheet of material shaped to provide twosides and a tab, the tab comprising an extension of one of said sides, a brush secured .to the tab end of the case, said tab being foldable back upon itself for enclosing the brush, and means cooperable on the folded tab and one of said sides for securing the tab in its f folded position.
