This invention relates to a waste fitting for baths, lavatory basins, sinks and the like, of the kind comprising a valve operating element in the form of a flexible wire or cable which is guided in a sheath and connected at one end to an operating handle while the other end is arranged so as to abut against the waste valve for opening the latter.
The object of the invention is to obtain a device of this kind which will operate durably in an efficient manner, and the invention consists essentially in providing the waste valve with a hollow stem fitted with guide wings and adapted to accommodate the ends of the wire and of its guide sheath, so that the wire will be positively guided and maintained in a central position relative to the valve and ensure free movement of the latter and so that the end of the sheath will be protected from the water by the enclosed air.
Further improvement in the wire guide is obtained by enclosing the sheath in a pipe which is supported in the valve casing and which projects together with the sheath into the valve stem.

Referring rst to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the waste fitting comprises a flanged, cylindrical valve casing 3 which is clamped by means of a nut It to the bottom of the respective bath, sink, or other vessel, and which is fitted with a waste valve I. The latter is provided with a bell-shaped stern I and with wings 2 which guide the valve and maintain it in its proper position within the casing. For operating the valve, a flexible steel wire or cable 'I is provided which abuts at one end against the valve inside the stem 4 and which is preferably provided with a thrust member in the form oi" a ball I I. The wire 'I is guided in a sheath 8 composed of a coil wire or band which may in its turn be enclosed in a protecting jacket 5. 'I'he sheath is closed at the ends by means of caps Ill provided with apertures through which the wire 'l projects. The sheath enters the valve stem 4 together with the wire l and is held in position by a bridge piece S whereby it is secured to the valve casing. The valve casing has a lateral inlet through which the wire and sheath are admitted, and the sheath is tightened to the casing by means of a gland I'I and a packing. The gland enters an internal enlargement in the casing which enables the outside of the latter to remain smooth for the reception of the nut I8.
The operation of the Valve is eiTected through the medium of a knob or handle which is connected to the wire 'I which can be arranged in any convenient position and at any suitable distance from the valve. The handle 'I3 shown in Fig. l is secured to a plunger I2 which is guided in a sleeve I4 connected to any suitable adjacent Support. A second sleeve I5, screwed on to the sleeve I4, holds the end of the sheath 8 which is secured in position by means of a set screw It.
Fig. 4 shows a modication of 'the operating device which in this case comprises a doublearmed lever 23 tted with a handgrip 22. The lever is pivoted to brackets mounted on a supporting base 26 to which the sheath 8 is secured by means of a nut 2l. The wire 'I is connected to a pivot 24 atone end of the lever, so that the Valve will be operated when the lever is rocked. The elements, with the exception of the handgrip 22, are enclosed in a casing 25.
In the modified arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the valve casing 3 is fitted with a pipe I9 which is secured to the bridge piece 6 and which opens at one end through the side of the casing, the opposite end of the pipe being located within the bell-shaped stem 4 of the valve I. A cap 20, which closes the end of the pipe, is screwed into the pipe and at the same time on to the sheath 8 so as to secure the latter in position. In this case there is no need for any packing gland, and the outer protecting jacket for the sheath may be omitted.
In the further modification shown in Fig. 6 a pipe I9', mounted in the same way as the pipe I9 just described, is led through a T-piece 28 which connects the waste pipe to the overflow. In this case the sheath 8 may be carried through the overow pipe to the operating handle.
The device may be modified within the scope of the invention as dened by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A waste fitting for baths and the like comprising a casing, a waste valve in said casing having a hollow stem and guide wings on said stem, an operating handle, a flexible wire connected at one end to said handle and abutting at the other end against said valve Within its hollow stem by means of a ball thrust member, a guide sheath for said Wire in the form of a flexible coil fitting snugly around the Whole length of said Wire except for the operating ends thereof and having one end located Within the stem of the valve, caps for closing the ends of said sheath, means for supporting said sheath Within the casing and means for supporting said operating handle.
2. A waste fitting for baths and the like comprising a casing, a Waste valve in said casing having a hollow stem and guide Wings on said stem, an operating handle, a exible wire connected at one end to said handle and abutting at the other end against said valve within its hollow stern, a guide sheath for said Wire having one end located Within the stem of the valve, a pipe supporting the sheath Within the casing and projecting together with the sheath into the valve stem, a closing cap removably mounted on the end of said pipe and on to the end of the sheath, and means for supporting said operating handle.
3. A Waste tting for baths and the like, comprising a casing, a Waste valve in said casing hav ing a hollow stern, an operating handle, a flexible Wire connected at one end to said handle and abutting at the other end against said valve Within its hollow stem, a guide sheath for the entire length of said wire except for its operating ends and having one end located Within the stern of the valve, means for supporting said sheath Within the casing and means for supporting said operating handle.
