Description
Oct. 25, 1938. c. GUBERAN PORTABLE ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed March 19, 1937 Fig. 1
figli Fig Patented Oct. 25, 1938 PORTABLE ADVERTISING DEVICE Christian Guberan, Augsburg, Germany Application March lil, 1937, Serial No. 131,805
In Germany March 27, 1938 Min.
This invention relates to a portable advertising device provided with a plurality of advertising plates which are slidable in guides, arranged side by side, and can be lifted and lowered selectively 5 and alternately in pairs.
There exist already portable advertising devices in which plates bearing the advertisements can be alternately lifted and lowered by means of a manually operable crank by the intermediary of chains and ropes, the ends of which can be shoved into, and withdrawn or released from, slots of a drum with the aid of clamping marks.
The type of portable advertising devices referred to in the preceding paragraph suil'ers from the drawback that their chain-gearings or ropegearings expand very soon after repeated use, so that the respective gearings which are likewise arranged side by side are liable to intertwist when the device is carelessly carried or set down with a shock. whereby reliable lifting or lowering of the advertising plates will be rendered impossible.
Besides, the repeated manual turning of the crank in order to lift and to lower the advertising plates is an operation which strainsthe carrier of the device considerably so that it is dimcult for him to show a certain denite number of plates in a certain described period of time.
'I'he several drawbacks from which the known advertising devices of the above-mentioned type sufl'er are completely overcome by and in my present improved device which renders possible an easy, quick and .oftentimes repeated exchange of the advertising plates without unduly fatiguing the bearer and operator.
I attain the object in view by providing every advertising plate in its lower portion with a hori zontal slot in which a lever equipped by means of a sliding roller is guided, said lever being supported with its hub on a hollow axle which can be coupled with an adjustable bolt by the intermediary of a nose thereof which extends through a slot of said shaft, whereby the advertising plates to be shown can be easily lifted and lowered by turning a handle by 90 degrees.
'Ihe invention is illustrated diagrammatically and by Fig. 1 is a rear view of the portable advertising device. g
Fig. 2 is a side-view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 a top plan-view of Fig. 1.
Figs. 4 to 'I show details.
On the drawing, I (Figs. 1 and 2) denotes the casing, 2 and 21 are the sides of the same, and) way of example ln the accompanying (o1. realza) denotes the advertising plates which are guided in guide members I and I, Fig. 3. In order to reduce the weight of the-plates I as much as possible without lreducing their necessary rigidness, they are made of alight metal and provided with 5 smooth or bordered edges. The plates 3 bear advertisements or pictures on both sides; these advertisements or pictures can be exchanged, of course, for other ones from time to time.
Every advertising plate has in its lower porlo tion a long horizontal slot 8 Fig. 1 in which a sliding roll 1 Fig. 4 is shiftable; this roll is attached to the upper end of a lever I.
At the other end of this lever I is a hub through which the lever is supported on a hollow axle Il that is guided in bearings II. The hub l of the lever 8 is provided with a slot I2 extending along the entire axial length of the hub: into this slot is shoved a nose I3 when the advertising plate Just in coupling connection with the lever 20 8 is to be lifted or lowered. Said nose I3 is guided in a longitudinal slot of the hollow axle Il and extends through said slot at right angles with respect to a piston |31 which is ilrmly connected with an adjustable bolt I4 having at its other 25 or free end a grip I5; the arrangement and shape of which is such that-it can be shoved into the slot I2 of the lever 8 pertaining to the advertising plate to be lifted or lowered.
Over the axle I0 is shoved a tubular extension 30 having a longitudinal slot IO through which extends the outwardly bent end of the bolt I l to which the grip I5 is attached. To the free end of the tubular extension Il is ailixed a grip I8, by means of which said extension can be shifted, as 35 well as turned, whereby also the bolt I4 will be turned and thus the previously adjusted advertising plate will be lifted or lowered. according to the direction of rotation.
At the slot I6 are notches I II, and the grip I5 40 is provided with a nose I5I which can engage any of said notches, so that thereby the extension I I and the bolt I4 will be coupled with one another. When this has taken place, the previously adjusted advertising plate can be lifted or lowered, 45 as lust suited.
'I'he casing I is equipped with two suitably disposed belts !l and 2|, by means of which the advertising device can be fastened on the back of a man. When the man is walking, he can adjust 5o any desired advertising plate housed in the casing and can lift'it or lower it, as just proper, by turning the grip I8, as described, so that all said plates can be shown after one another in a certain definite succession or selectively, as desired. Ad- 55 vertising go'ods or whatever else it may be in this way, by having the device carried along streets, over places, and so on, has been proved to be extraordinarily successful.
I claim:-
A. portable advertising device comprising in combination a casing open at the top and closed at the bottom, two straps for attaching the casing to the back o! a porter, a plurality of plates vertically slidable in said casing each plate having a horizontal slot near its lower end, a pair of brackets arranged in horizontal alignment on one side of said casing. a horizontal hollow axle rotatable in said brackets and having a longitudinal slot, a piston slidable-in said axle, a handle carrying said piston and projecting from the front end of said axle, said handle adapted to shift said piston in said axle and rotate said axle, a nose on said piston projecting through said slot,
20 a plurality oi hubs arranged side by side on said axle each hub having a slot designed to receive the end of said nose projecting through the slot in said axle, to lock said hubs against independent rotation in relation to said axle, levers each xed at one end to one of said hubs, and rollers one mounted on the other end of each lever and each shiftably engaging in the slot in one of said plates, an extension on the front end of said axles having a longitudinal slot with a plurality oi notches adapted to lock said handle in its addusted position with the nose of said piston in engagement with the hub-of one of said levers, and a handle on the front end of said extension adapted to turn said extension and said axle with the hub engaged by said nose to swing upwards the lever carried by said hub and raise one o! said plates through the intermediary of the roller on the other end o! this lever.
