Description

Oct. 18, 1938. H, H, RUD 2,133,576
SAFETY RAZOR v I Original Filed Nov. 14, 1935 Patented Oct. 18, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application November 14, 1935, Serial No. 49,826 Renewed April 12, 1938 1 Claim.
This invention relates to safety razors, and its general object is to provide a razor that includes a cap, guard plate and blade receiving container which acts in the capacity of a handle during the use of the razor, and provides a convenient and positive gripping means, in that it is tapered toward its free end when in opened or handle acting position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a safety razor of the character set forth, that includes a guard plate having teeth curved on both the upper and lower sides, so that either side can ,be up in using the razor, and that feature adds materially in assembling the razor which can be done in an easy and expeditious manner with very little effort.
A further object of the invention is to provide a razor that is small and compact, simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and extremely efficient in operation, use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the safety razor which forms the subject matter of the present in vention and showing the same in position for use.
Figure 2 is a view taken at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the head and a portion of the container or box like handle.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken at right angles to Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the handle folded in box formation to accommodate the cap, guard plate, blade and extra blades as shown in Figure 6.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that the handle of my razor is in the form of a container or box and includes a hollow upper section I and a lower section 2, both of which are relatively narrow and are provided with inclined confronting edges, and a hollow lower section 2 which is relatively wider than the section I, but both are relatively narrow and substantially rectangular in formation, with an open side provided with inclined edges.
The lower section 2 is provided with a flange 4 disposed about the edge of the open side thereof for the purpose of being received in a groove 5 about the edge of the open side of the section I, for holding the sections against relative movement when disposed in closed position or container formation as shown in Figure 5.
In order to hold the sections secured together when closed, I provide latching means that includes a stud 6 formed on the outer end of the flange 4 and which is received in a depression 1 arranged in the outer end of the recess, as clearly shown in Figure 4.
It will be obvious that by providing a relatively wide lower section and a narrow upper section and disposing the confronting edges of the container at an inclination, when the container is in open position with the hinged ends abutting as best shown in Figure 4, the sections cooperate to provide a handle of tapered formation with its large end lowermost, in order to present a con venient and positive gripping surface.
The guard of my razor which is indicated by the reference numeral 8 is relatively narrow and includes teeth 9 that are provided with upper and lower curved surfaces, so that either side of the guard can be used uppermost as clearly shown in Figure 3, and the guard is provided with a central opening l0 while recesses II are formed in the outer ends.
The cap is indicated by the reference numeral l2 and is provided with a flat under surface and a rounded upper surface, with a stud l3 depending centrally therefrom to be passed through the opening In of the guard plate 8 and through the blade M, to be threadedly secured in a threaded opening I 5 arranged in the free end of the upper section I, as best shown in Figure 4, for detachably securing the cap, blade and guard plate to the handle, as will be apparent.
The cap has formed with and depending from the ends thereof lugs 16 received in the recesses l I, as well as for the passage through recesses 11 arranged in the ends of the blade [4, for holding the blade against rotation or displacement during the use of the razor.
It will of course be understood from Figure 6, that the container receives the guard plate, blade and cap, as well as extra blades, and when the sections are folded or closed to act as such, a very small and compact structure is provided, with the result it can be carried in the pocket of the user in a very convenient manner.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A safety razor comprising a cap, a blade and a guard plate, a combined foldable handle and container for the cap, blade and guard plate, and including a hollow substantially rectangular relatively wide lower section and a hollow substan tially rectangular relatively narrow upper section having one of their ends hinged together, said hinged ends being disposed in abutting relation when the sections are used as a handle, said sections having one of their sides open and the open sides disposed at an inclination inwardly from the free end of the lower section to the free end of the upper section, to taper the handle accordingly, said open sides being disposed in edge to edge contact when the sections are used as a container, the edges of the open sides being correspondingly flanged and grooved for cooperation to hold the sections against relative movement when in container formation, means for securing the sections together in container formation, and means for detachably securing the cap, blade and guard plate in cooperative relation with respect to each other, to the free end of the upper section.
