This invention relates to cutting mechanisms for trimming the edges and slitting a traveling web of warp knit fabric as the fabric. is treated on the finishing machine.
It is the aim of the present invention to obviate the necessity of a separate machine for slitting the travelingfabric and cutting the edges thereof by combining the slitting and cutting mechanism with the conventional finishing ma- 1o chine on which the travelingweb of fabric is dried and stretched in the same operation.
One of the essential features of j the present invention is the arrangement of the cutting mechanism to trim the edges of the knit'fabric on :-the finishing .machine' thereby leaving an 7 even smooth edge that facilitates rolling into neat bolts which edges are customarily curled and full of pin holes from the tentering pins, and these curled edges impede the rolling of the fabric into bolts- ;.:::3
In the conventional process the intermediate portions of the web of knit fabric will dry long before theedges. It is therefore another feature of the present invention to reduce the time ordinarily consumed by-the finishing operation and to increase the speed of the machine by devising a construction that severs the damp edges of the fabric as it comes from the drying chamher on the finishing machine thereby saving the difference in the amount of time consumedin drying the edges and the amount of time required to dry intermediate portions of the web,
Further objects of the present invention are to provide cutting mechanisms of the character referred to that are strong, compact and durable, very easily manipulated, thoroughly reliable for their intended purposes, adaptable to the conventional finishing machines, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and install. 1
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described 'and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein the embodiments of the invention are disclosed,
but it is to be understood that changes,-variations and modifications maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claims hereunto'appended. Referring to the drawings in detail A indicates a finishing machine for fibrous webs such as warp .knit fabrics. This machine is of conventional structure like in U. S. Patent 1,067,829, July 22, 1913 and combines the drying operation and the stretching or tentering operation in the one finishing machine as is customary in the trade. 55
The delivery end of the machine only is shown for the purpose of illustrating the cutting mechanisms applied thereto. Any of the conventional drying means (not shown) may be used on the machine.
The machine is formed of a pair of side frames i5 which in accordance with the conventional practice are laterally adjustable to provide the proper degree of stretch transversely of the knit fabric web it which travels continuously through the machine. Web is is dried and stretched on the finishing machine. As is the conventional construction, the endless tentering chains l1, one on each side, travel continuously at predetermined speeds in slotted, edge-wise disposed, channel guides it, one on each side frame l5 and secured thereto. Each link of each tentering chain it is equipped with an inwardly directed finger [9 that extends through a slot in the channel guide it and carries the upwardly directed tente ring pins 29 on the free end. The knit fabric comes to the finishing machine in the wet condi- "tion in a relatively long web and is of a uniform width- The side edges of the web are forced over the pins 2:] on the tentering chain I1 at the loading end of the machine with intermediate portions stretched between the chains. The tentering chains I! travel under power supplied by the machine, carrying the stretched web Hi from the loading end to the delivery end of the finishi-ng machine A where the web passes around a pair of elevated rolls 2!, in a manner shown in Figures 1 and 9, from whence it travels to an overhead device (not shown) which folds the fabric.
As the web I6 passes along the machine the tenterin'g chains progressively spread apart to stretch the fabric within certain limits, depending on the character of the fabric and other practical factors. While the fabric is being stretched the web passes through the drying chamber of conventional construction (not shown) and comes out of the drying chamber where it is acted on by'the edge trimming and slitting members of the present invention which are shown in Figure l assembled on the delivery end of the machine.
Referring to Figure 1 where the delivery end of the machine A rearwardly of the drying chamher is shown, it will be seen that there is one edge trimming member B on one side and another edge trimming member C on the other side both of which are in alignment with each other. These edge trimming members trim the curled edges 22 from the web of knit fabric while the web is continuously traveling on the tentering chains l1. Under certain conditions it may be desired to cut the web in half in a longitudinal direction. In this event the single slitting member D is thrown into operation. In event more than two lengths of fabric are desired, then the multiple slitting member E, shown in Figures 11, 12 and 13 is attached to the machine or moved "into cooperation therewith. It is pointed out that whether the single or multiple slitting members D and E are used, the cutting discs of either are in transverse alignment with the cutting discs of the edge trimming members B and C.
Furthermore, the edge trimming members B and C are arranged to bear on top of the web 16 while the single or multiple slitting members D and E operate under the web against the bottom face thereof. As the web passes the edge trimming members B 'and 'C the severed edges 22. sticking to the tenteri-ng pins 20 wipe against the rear-wardly inclined stripping plates 23 secured to the side frames I5 and these plates strip the severed edges free of the tentering chains.
Each of the edge trimming members B and C is arranged and constructed in the same manner. It will be seen that each of the edge trimming members is carried by the tentering chain guides l8 so that in event there is any lateral adjustment of the guides it will cause a corresponding movement of the edge trimming members as a unit. In each member there is an elongated adjustable shoe plate 24 extending inwardly of the guide channels I8. This shoe plate has a pair of integral arms 25 extending outwardly provided with slots 25 through which extend the anchoring bolts 21 that fasten in the top web of the guide channels 18. The shoe plate 24 is fiat but the opposite ends 28 are curved upwardly. Theopposite margins of the web l6 pass under this shoe plate and an intermediate portion of the plate has an elongated slot 29 through which a segment of the rotary cutter disc extends when the disc is in cutting position as will later appear. The inside or fixed section of a pair of companion sections that form the "cutter guard hood 30a has a flange 3| riveted or otherwise secured at '32 to the top face of the shoe plate fl -adiacent the slot 29. This fixed section is angular in configuration and forms the inside vertical wall 33 and rear vertical end wall '34 of the hood 36a, when the movable companion section is closed.
Each ofthe edge trimming members further includes an electric motor 35 anchored to an outwardly extending base plate 36 bolted to the top'web of the guide channels I8. Each motor has a pulley 31 on the inner end of the motor drive shaft '38. A pair of upright spaced brackets "39 have their bases secured to the base plate 36. A' pivot pin 40 extends across the pair of brackets and the ends of the pin are secured in the upper portions thereof. The forward end of a cutter supporting-arm 4-1 swings on the pin 40. Forwardly of the plate 35 is an upstanding rest or post member 42 that is fastened to the upper web of the guide channel I8. The cutter unit is supported in the inoperative position by the post 42 as is indicated in the dotted line position shown Figure '3'of the drawings.
The rear end of each cutter supporting arm 4| has a bearing sleeve housing 43 bolted thereto as at 44. A roller bearing 45 is mounted in the housing. The ends of the rollers have pintles rotatable in'the centrally apertured cap plates 43 which are secured to the ends of the sleeve housings 43; An intermediate portion of the cutter shaft 41 extends through the central apertures in the cap plates 45 and is journaled in the roller bearing 45. The outer end of each shaft 41 has a pulley 48 mounted thereon which is driven by an "endless-belt 49 from the motor pulley 31. On the inner end of the drive shaft 41 is the cutter disc 41a.
The movable companion section of the cutter guard hood 30a has a vertical wall 50 slotted at 51V to straddle the shaft 41 and this wall is fixed by riveting or welding to the inside cap plate 46. 'The vertical wall merges with the top horizontal-wall 52 and the edge of this top wall in closed position bears on the top edge of wall 33 of the fixed companion section. wall 53 is also integral with the wall 50. of the vertical wall 58 and the top wall 52 of the movable section is cutaway to provide a recess or space 54 near the rear corner to allow the abrading wheels to engage the edge 'of the cutter disc 41a for the purpose of sharpening the discs. The lower segment of the cutter discs4la registers with the slots 29 in the shoes.
The cutter discs 41a are adjustable with respect to the web of fabric being cut and also with respect to shoe plate 24. Forthis'purpose the center of arm 4| has a screw-threaded opening to receive the intermediate portion of a threaded shank 55 on an adjusting bolt. The lower projecting end of the bolt is formed with a ball 56, which rests in a cup recess 51 on the upper face of a round plate 58 secured to the upper web of the channel guide I8. A look nut 59 is mounted on the outer threaded portion of the shank 55 and bears on the arm 4| to lock the adjusting bolt in position. On the free upper end of the bolt is a gripping head 59a which is gripped by a wrench in adjusting the bolt.
The lower end of'a rearwardly inclined guide arm 80 is riveted to the inside of the wall 50 of the movable section of the hood 30a, as at 6|. The arm 80 extends through the recess 54 in the hood. On the projecting end of the guide arm slides a sectional sleeve-like carriage 62 which has a pair of integral arms 63, 84 in which are journaled a pair of abrading wheels 65, 66 made of carborundum or other like abrading material. The abrading peripheries of these wheels, 65, 66 are arranged on the opposite sides of the cutting edge of the cutter discs 41a as shown in Figure 6 of the drawings and when they are brought into engagement with the cutting edge of the disc it is dressed'and sharpened.
The carriage 62 is maintained on the upper portion of the guide arm 60 in retracted position by a spring 61. One end of the spring is attached to a staple 68 on one arm 63, while the other end is anchored to the free end of the guide arm 68. To slide the carriage and abrading wheels into engagement with the cutting edges of cutter discs 41a, a lateral lever 69 is pivoted at one end at 70 to the free'end of the guide arm 60. A link 1| has the lower end pivoted at 12 to the carriage 62 and its upper end pivoted at 13 to an intermediate portion of lever 69. Moving lever 69 downwardly slides the carriage and wheels into engagement with the cutting edge of the cutter discs 41a and through the recess 54 in the hood 30a, and upon the release of the lever the spring 81 retracts them to the position shown in Figure 3 and retains them in this position until force is applied tothelever69.

' It will .be seen that the slitting member D has a construction similar to the edge trimming 515 members B and 0 except that the assembly is arranged under the .web l6. To rearrange the parts to operate under the web, theyare positioned and designed in a slightly different manner but the principle of operation is the same. 4'50 Now referring to the single slitting member D, it will be. seen that an elongated platform 8| is secured to the machine A under the web l6 of the fabric. At one end of the platform BI is anchored the drivemotor 82 carrying a drive 35 shaft 83 ,and a pulley 84. Near one, end of the platform issecured an, upstanding yoke 85 to the crown 85; (of which is secured the rear'portion of the shoe plate 86 over which the web It travels. The shoe plate is provided with an elongated slot 81 through which the upper segment of the cutter disc 88 extends when it is in cutting position. a The cutter shaft supporting arm 89 is pivoted at the rear end on a pivot pin 98 secured-ber35 tween vertical spaced brackets 9|. This pivot pin 98 is also eccentric to the motor shaft 83 and the arm has a sleeve 92 embracing the pivot pin between the brackets 9|.
An intermediate portion of the cutter shaft 93 o of the single slitting member D is journaled in a bearing 94 on the forward end of the supporting arm 89 like in the edge trimming members B and C, but there are no cutter guards necessary since the cutter operates under the; web I6 where accidents are unlikely to happen. One endof the shaft 93is threaded and cap 94' holds the cutter disc 88 on the shaft when the nut 95 is tightened against the cap.
Thearm 89 and the cutter 88 are adjustable in a manner similar to the corresponding arm and cutter discs on the trimming members B and C. A threaded shank 55 of the adjusting bolt hasv an intermediate portion supported in a threaded opening in an intermediate portion of the arm 89. The free, upper end of the adjusting bolt bears against the bottom face of the crown of the yoke 85. The lower projecting end of the threaded shank 55 extends below the arm 89 and has a gripping head thereon similar tothe gripping head59a. The locking nut 59 embracing the threaded shank 55f bears against the upper face of the arm 89 and locksthe adjusting bolt in position. 9
The cutter supporting arm 89 swings on the 65 pivot like in the trimming members B and C but this arm 89 swings downwardly instead'of upwardly. The lever ,that swings the arm 89 is indicated at 9B andthe rear end projects rearwardly of the machine A and has a handle 91 formed thereon which. isoperated from the back of themachine A. The lever 96 has a certain .amount of lateral flexibility for latching purposes. Theforward end of lever 96 is bolted at 98 to the: bearing-sleeve 92.0n the rear end of 75 porting arm.
Since the cutter 88 would ordinarily swing free of the cutting contact with the web 15 passing over the shoe 86, the lever is secured by an upstanding latch arm 98 bolted at its lower end at 99 to an angle bar I00 mounted on a part of the finishing machine A. This latch arm 98 is positioned on the machine at approximately the middle of the 1ever'96. On the free upper end of the latch arm is a lateral prong IOIi in the notch I02 of which seats the corner of the lever 0.6 when the cutter disc 88 isin cutting position. When it is desired to move cutter disc 88 from cutting engagement with the web, as shown in Figures 9 and 10, the lever '96 is pressed downwardly and then flexed side-wise free of the notch I02 whereupon the .arm 89 swinging on pivot 00 moves the cutter 88 downwardly and out of cutting engagement with the web I 6. It is pointed out that the cutter disc .88 is in transverse alignment with the cutter discs 410. on the edge trim ming members B and C. 7
It is sometimes necessary to slit the web 16 into narrow pieces that require the use of more than one cutting disc. This multiple slitting member is shown at E in Figures l1, l2 and 13. In this event a long wooden or steel plate 103 may "be fastened to the finishing machine A, or the plate I03 may be supported on legs (not shown) extending to the floor. In either event, the plate I03 is supported in rigid position under the-web 16 of fabric to be slit, with the cutter discs in transverse alignment with the cutter discs 41a on the edge trimming members B and C. The plate I03 is disposed transversely of the web I6. It will be understood that the multiple slitting member E is used in conjunction with the edge trimming members B and C.
Adjacent each end of the plate I03 there are aligned adjustable bearings indicated generally at I04 and I05 each of which are made with a base I05 through which extends a pair of anchor bolts I01, I08 that slide to adjusted position in opposed slots I09, I I0 in the plate when the bolts are loosened. When the bolts are tightened with respect to the plate the bearing members are held in stationary position. Rising from the base I06 each bearing has an arm II I on which are formed the bearing sleeves II2 which are in alignment with each other.
Journaled in each bearing sleeve H2 in the bearings I04, I05 are intermediate portions of stub shafts II3, the inner projecting portions of which have sockets II4 confronting each other. The opposite ends of the drive shaft II5 are slidably received in these sockets. The ends of the drive shaft I I5 are secured to the stub shafts H3 in the sockets by the set screws I I6 mounted near the free inner ends of the stub shafts H3. The sockets II4 allow the drive shaft to beshortened or lengthened within certain limitsto accommodate the movement of the bearings I04, 405 and the cutter discs. The outer ends of each stub shaft H3 is threaded and has a cutter disc I I-.8 mounted thereon by the nuts II 'I, one on each side of the cutter discs. The stub shafts I I3 move with the bearings I04, I05 when the bearings are adjusted so that the cutter discs may .be adjusted with respect to the width of the web. An electric motor H8 is carried by a'shelf :or ledge H9 which may be attached to the machine A. The motor shaft I has a pulley I2 I connected to a pulley I22 on the drive shaft- Hiby a1bel ti 23'.

The shoe plates I24 are arranged under the web like the shoe plates 88 and are provided with slots similar to the slots 8.! through which segments of the cutting discs I I6, extend. The shoe plates are laterally adjustable to accommodate the movement of the cutter discs H6. The shoe plates are supported above. the plates I03 by brackets I25 the bottoms of which are fastened to plate I03 by bolts I26 which slide in slots i2! in the plate I03 and these slots are parallel with the pairs of bearing slots I08, IIO. By loosening bolts I26 the shoe plates :I24 are free to slide when the cutter discs IIB are adjusted.
In the single ,slittting member D and the mun tiple slitting member E it will be seen that their assembly does not use the sharpening wheels nor the cutter guards like in the edge trimming members Band C. In the multiple slitting member E the assembly does not swing in and out of cutting engagement with the web It. The design of the parts of the multiple slitting member provides the proper position of the cutter discs II6 with respect to the web I6 for cutting purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: a
'1. The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of an edge trimming member coacting with the web to trim a marginal portion therefrom during its passage through the ma-- chine, a web slitting member coacting with the web intermediate the side edges thereof to slit the web lengthwise, and one of said members being connected with the machine.
2.. The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of an edge trimming member coacting with the web to trim a marginal portion thereform during its passage through the machine, a web slitting member v.coacting with the web intermediate the side edges thereof to slit the web lengthwise, and one of said members be- :ing rockably connected with the machine.
3,. The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateralstretching means for supporting a -flexible web, of an edge trimming member connected with the machineand coacting with the web to trim a marginal portion therefrom during :its passage through the machine, and a web slitting member connected with the machine and coacting with the web intermediate the side edges thereof to slit the web lengthwise.
4. The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of an edge trimming member and a web slitting member connected with the :machine, said edge trimming member being rockable toward and away fromthe web; and the slitting member being adjustable to vary the position of the slit relative to the width of the web.
5.. The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateralstretching means for supporting .a flexible web, of a rotary edge trimming mem- '?ber carried by one side of the machine and coacting with the web to trim a marginal portion therefrom during the passage .of' the web through the machine, a rotary slitting member carried by the machine to, engage the web inwardly of the edge thereof, and an adjustable support carried by the slitting member to retain said memher in operative relation with-the web during its passage through the. machine.
6. The combination of a finishing machine of the character that embodies structure for laterally stretching, and dryinga traveling web of fibrous material, a rotary edge trimming member swingably carrie'dby one side of the machine adjacent the edge of the web, a. rotary slitting member carried by the machine to engage the web inwardly of the edge thereof,said rotary slitting member being adjustable axially to vary the position of the'slit relative to the width of theiweb, said trimming and slitting members dis-'- posed on opposite faces of thetraveling' web, an adjustable suppor't'carried by the trimming and slitting membersto retain said members in operative relation with respect to'the web dur-. ing its passage through the machine, and power means carried by the machine to drive the trimming and slitting members.

The combination of a finishing machine of the character that embodies structure for laterally stretching and drying a traveling web of fibrous material, a rotary edge trimming mem- I ber swingably carried by one side of the machine adjacent the edge of the web, a rotary slitting and slitting members disposed on opposite faces of the traveling web, an adjustable support carried by the trimming and slitting members to retain said members in operative relation with respect to the web during its passage through the machine, andv power means carried by the ma-- chine to drive the trimming and slitting members.

Thefcombination withamachine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a' fiexible web, of an edge trimming member connected with the machine and coacting with the web to trim a marginal portion therefrom during its passage through the machine, a web slitting memberconnected with the machine and coact' ing with the web intermediate the side edges thereof to slit the web lengthwise, and said members being disposed on the opposite faces of the web; 16.; The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching meansfor supporting a flexible web, of an edge trimming member con thereof to slit the web lengthwise, one of said members being selectively rockable, and the members being disposed on theopposite faces of the web.-

Thecombination of a finishing machine of the character that embodies structure for laterally stretching and drying a traveling web of fibrous material, a rotary edge trimming member swingably carried by one side of the-machine adjacent the edge of the web, a rotary slitting member carried by the machine to engage the web inwardly of the edge thereof, said rotary slitting member being adjustable axially to vary the position of the slit relative to the width of the web,
and said trimming and slitting members disposed on opposite faces of the traveling web.
18. The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of an edge trimming member connected with the machine and coacting with the web to trim a marginalportion therefrom during its passage through the machine.

In a machine, the combination with a pair of traveling supporting members providing tension at an angle to the direction of travel of a web carried thereby, of an edge trimming member connected with the machine and coacting with the traveling web to trim the edge therefrom during its passage through the machine.

The combination of a finishing machine of the character that embodies structure for laterally stretching and drying a traveling web of fibrous material, a rotary edge trimming member swingably carried by the machine adjacent one side thereof, a slotted adjustable shoe under which the margin of the web travels carried by the machine coacting with and disposed in the path of the edge trimming member, and an adjustable support carried by the trimming member and engageable with the machine to retain the trimming member in operative relation with the web during its passage through the machine.

The combination of a finishing machine of the character that embodies structure for laterally stretching and drying a traveling web of fibrous material, a rotary edge trimming member swingably carried by the machine adjacent one side thereof, a slotted adjustable shoe under which the margin of the web travels carried by the machine coacting with and disposed in the path of the edge trimming member, an adjustable support carried by the trimming member and engageable with the machine to retain the trimming member in operative relation with the web during its passage through the machine, and rockable means on the machine engageable with the rotary trimming member to swingthe member to inoperative position.

An edge trimming device for use on fabric finishing machines wherein a traveling web is operated on while the latter is under lateral tension comprising a slotted shoe adapted to be carried by the side frame of the finishing machine and under which a web of fabric travels, a supporting arm pivoted to the machine, a cutter shaft carrying a rotary cutter journaled on the supporting arm to swing into and out of engagement with the traveling web with the cutter in alignment with the slot on the shoe, and ad justable means mounted on the arm and coacting with the machine to adjust the cutter relative to the shoe.

An edge trimming device for use on fabric finishing machines wherein a traveling web is operated on while the latter is under lateral tension comprising a slotted shoe adapted to be carried by the side frame of the finishing machine and under which a web of fabric travels, a supporting arm pivoted to the machine, a cutter shaft carrying a rotary cutter journaled on the supporting arm to swing into and out of engagement with the traveling web with the cutter in alignmentwith the slot on the shoe, adjustable means mounted on the arm and coacting with the machine to adjust the cutter relative to the shoe, a guide arm connected with the support-- ing arm, and an abrading member slidably mounted on the guide arm for sharpeningthe cutter.

An edge trimming device for use on fabric finishing machines wherein a traveling web is operated on while the latter is under lateral tension ing arm to swing into and out of engagement with the traveling web with the cutter disc in alignment with the slot on the shoe, adjustable means mounted on the arm and coacting with the machine to adjust the cutter relative to the shoe, a guide arm connected with the supporting arm, abrading wheels slidably mounted "on the guide arm for sharpening the cutter disc, and a lifting lever mounted on the machine and engageable with the supporting arm for moving the cutter disc out of contact with the traveling web. 25. An edge trimming device for use on fabric finishing machines wherein a traveling web is operated on while the latter is under lateral tension comprising a slotted shoe adapted to be carried by the side frame of the finishing machine and under which a web of fabric travels, a supporting arm pivoted to the machine, a cutter shaft carrying 'a rotary cutter'disc journaled on the supporting arm to swing into and out of engagement with the traveling web with the cutter disc in alipnment with the slot on the shoe, adjustable means mounted on the arm and coacting with the machine to adjust the cutter disc relative to theshoe, a guide arm connected with the supporting arm, abrading wheels slidably mounted on the guide arms for sharpening the cutter disc, a lifting lever mounted on the machine and engageable with the supporting arm for moving the cutter disc out of contact with the traveling web, a motor mounted on the machine, and operative connections between the motor and the cutter shaft.

The combination of a finishing machine that includes traveling tentering means for supporting a fibrous web under lateral tension during passage through the machine, a Web slitting member including a drive shaft adapted for mounting on a finishing machine under the a fibrous web, a plurality of shoes carried by the machine beneath the web and having an accumulative area adapted to support a portion of the web less than the'width thereof, a plurality of slitting members one for each shoe carried by the machine beneath the web and coacting with the shoe to slit the traveling web, and means coacting with the slitting members to vary the'position of the slits relative to the width of the web.
28. In combination With a machine embodying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a fibrous web, a shoe carried by the machine beneath the web for supporting the firbrous Web at an angle relative to the plane of travel, a rotary web slitting member carried by the machine beneath the web inwardly of the sides thereof and coacting with the shoe toslit the traveling web, and'means coacting with the slitting member to vary the position of the slit relative to the width of the web.
29. In combination with a machine embodying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting 30. In combination with a machine embody ing traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a fibrous web, a shoe carried by'the'machine for supporting the fibrous web at'an angle relative to the plane of travel, a rotary web slitting member carried by the machine inwardly of the sides thereof and coacting with the shoe to slit the traveling web, and means coacting with the slitting member to vary the position of the slit relative to the width of the Web.

The combination of a finishing machine that includes traveling'tentering means for supporting a traveling web'under-lateral tension during passage'through the machine, a web slitting member including a slotted'shoe carried by the machine, an adjustable cutter shaft mounted on the machine, and acutter disc mounted on the shaft in'alignment with the slot in the shoe.
32. The combinationwith a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for'supporting a flexible web, of a web-slitting member connected with the machine and coacting with the Web intermediate' theside edges thereof to slit the web lengthwise. i i

The combination with a machine carrying" traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible wea bra web slitting member connected with the machine and coacting with the web intermediate the side edges thereof to slit the web lengthwise, and the slitting member being adjustable to vary the position of the slit relative to the width of the web.

The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of a web slitting member pivotally connected with the machine and coacting with Web intermediate the side edges thereof to slit the web lengthwise, and an adjustable support carried by the web slitting member and coacting with the machine to adjust the member relative tothe plane of the web.

The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of a web slitting member pivotally connected with the machine and coacting with the Web intermediate the side edges thereof to slit the web lengthwise, an operating lever connected with the web slitting member to swing said member on its pivot, and a keeper latch carried by the machine and coacting with the lever to lock the Web slitting member in operative position.

The combination of a finishing machine of the character that embodies structure for laterally stretching and drying a traveling web of fibrous material, a rotary edge trimming member swingably carried by the machine adjacent one side thereof, a slotted adjustable shoe under which the margin of the web travels carried by the machine coacting with and disposed in the path of the edge trimming member, an adjustable support carried by the trimming member and engageable with the machine to retain the trimming member in operative relation with the web during its passage through the machine, rockable means on the machine engageable with the. rotary trimming member to swing the member to inoperative position, and abrading means carried by the trimming member for selectively sharpening the same.

The combination'with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting aflexible web, of a stationary motor, a rockable rotary cutter mounted on the machine to swing on an axiseccentric relative to the axis of the motor, an endless driving connection between the motor and cutter adapted to be extendedbetween'taut "and slackened positions within therocking limits of the rotary cutter, and an abrading member movably mounted on the rotary cutter for'coaction with the cutter for sharpening the same.

The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexibleweb, of an 'edge trimrning member connected with the machine andcoacting with the web to trim a marginal portion therefrom during its passage through the machine, and an abrading member movably connected with the trimming -'member for selectively sharpening the same.

The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of a stationary motor, a rockable rotary cutter mounted on the machine in spaced relation to the motor to rock on an axis eccentric relative to the axis of the motor, and an endless driving connection between the motor and cutter adapted to be extended between taut and slackened positions within the limits of the rocking movement of the rotary cutter.

The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of an edge trimming de- 30xvice carried by the machine; said device including a rotary cutter carried by the machine, and a motor carried by the machine; a driving connection between the rotary cutter and the motor; and means to render the driving connection in- 5 operative while the motor is running.

The combination with a machine carrying propelling means applying tension at an angle traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of a web slitting device carried by the machine; said device including a rotary cutter carried by the machine; and a motor carried by the machine; a driving connection between the rotary cutter and the motor; and means to render the driving connection inoperative while the motor is running.

The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web of an edge trimming device carried by the machine, and a web slitting device carried by the machine; each of said devices including a rotary cutter, and a motor mounted in spaced relation to the cutter; a driving connection between the rotary cutter and the motor in each device; and means to render the driving connection inoperative while the motor is running.

The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of an edge trimming member mounted on the machine, and a stripping plate carried by the machine to strip the trimmed edge from the stretching means after the edge has been severed from the web.
49. The combination with a machine carrying traveling lateral stretching means for supporting a flexible web, of an edge trimming member and a web slittingmember connected with the machine, both of said members being mounted to rock toward and away from the web, and a stripping plate carried by the machine to remove the trimmed edge from the stretching means after the edge has been severed from the web.
