This invention relates to stokers and more particularly to improved means in a stoker for deecting fuel into the zone of action of the distributing means.
It is an object of this invention to provide in a Stoker, a deector that is easily and readily adjustable and capable of deflecting fuel to the fuel distributor in proper amounts without intervfering with the free passage of fuel toward the fuel distributor.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a pivoted deiector of the above construction, the pivot point of which is derectly above the pressure fluid device.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a pvoted fuel deiiector which is provided on its under side, and at the foremost edge thereof, with an enlarged portion for diverting laterally, irrespective of the angular position of the deflector, a certain amount of the preponderant mass of fuel passing through the Stoker conduit to the fuel distributor.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent as the description proceeds,
o the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional View through the rearward portion of a locomotive and the stoker thereof, showing the invention partly in similar section and partly in side elevation;
Figure 2 is a plan View of the stoker structure illustrated in Figure 1 with portions of the locomotive in section; and
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views taken on the lines 3-3 and 4 4, respectively, of Figure 1.
In the drawing, I8 designates a boiler rebox of conventional design having a backhead I I with a firing opening I2, and provided with the grate I3. Fuel is delivered to the rebox by suitable stoker mechanism, only so much being shown as is necessary to a complete understanding of this invention.
The forward tubular conduit section or riser of a flexible conduit system extending from a source of fuel supply, as the bin of a locomotive tender, to the firing opening I2 of the boiler is designated as I4. The riser I4 is carried on the backhead II by a supporting bracket I5. The riser terminates at its lower end in a spherical seat I6 receiving the ball member I'I of a conduit section I8 leading forwardly from a source of fuel supply.
From its lower end the riser extends upwardly and forwardly, flaring outwardly at its upper end, and communicates with the ring opening I2 through its laterally spreading and substantially horizontal mouth portion I 9. 'Ihe mouth portion I9 is provided with the flanges 20, 20a for attachment to the backhead by suitable fastening means, as by bolts. This mouth portion is formed with an upstanding Wall 2| toy which is detachably secured a distributor plate 22, which plate forms an extended floor portion of the riser pro- 10 jectlng through the firing opening I2 of the backhead.
The riser I4 is provided with an upwardly directed opening 23 which is closed by acover 24. Bolts 25 are utilized for detachably securing the 15 cover to the riser I4. Between its side portions 24a, 24h, the cover 24 is provided with a recess 26 extending from the lower rearward edge of the cover 24 to a point rearward of the redoor 21.
Within the recess 26 a supplemental cover 28 is 20 positioned, the supplemental cover 28 being hinged to the upper end of the cover 24'as at 29. Clamps 3D securely fasten the supplemental cover 28 in position.
Rearwardly of the distributor plate 22 and 25 outside the firebox is a vertically disposed nozzle or distributor head 3l to which pressure fluid such as steam is supplied by a desired number of supply pipes 32. 'Ihe head 3| is provided with openings 33 in horizontal alignment for emitting a 30 fan-shaped blast of pressure flued across the distributor plate 22. Disposed in the conduit section I8 is a screw 34, preferably formed with an additional flight Elia at its forward end to assist in insuring a continuous delivery of fuel onto the 35 distributor plate 22.
In stoking devices of the character described and illustrated in the drawing, it has been found, in practice, that the screw conveying means has a tendency to discharge more fuel to one side of `the riser than to the other and as a consequence, the fuel stream delivered into the zone of action of the steam blasts is of unequal volume; thereby more fuel is spread over one side of the reboX than the other, establishing troublesome fire conditions. The side toward which the greater amount of fuel is delivered depends upon the direction of rotation of the screw While advancing th-e fuel forwardly. 1
This inventionprovides novel means to over- 5o come this uneven delivery and distribution of fuel comprising a deilector vane 35 which is carried by the supplemental cover 28. 'Ihe deflector vane 35 is somewhat triangular in shape, consisting of a bottom edge 36 disposed wholly above 55 thejet head 3|, the front edge 31, and a rear edge 38 which is curved in conformity to thev inner shape of the supplemental cover 28.V The front edge 31 of the deflector vane is disposed mainly in the transverse vertical plane'of the front face of the distributor head 3| while the Y bottom edge 36 is disposed above the plane of the head 3| and is V-shaped in transverse Vertical cross section. The apex of the V-shaped bottom edge 36 is directed downwardly toward the column of fuel being elevated through the riser yI4 and is eective to split and divide the oncoming single column of fuel into two columns, each being of greater or lesser volume depending upon the position of the deiiector vane 35.
In order to permit angular adjustment ofthe deflector vane 35, the upper forward end thereofVY is provided with a shaft portion 39, the axis'of which is disposed centrally of the riser I4 and lies in the transverse vertical plane passing a slight distance rearward of the distributor head front face. The shaft portion 39 of the dellector vane 35 is journaled in a bearing 4I) formed in the foremost edge of the supplemental cover 28. Above Vthe shaft portion 3S is a square extension 4I over which is passed and engaged in operative relation the handle 42. A pin 43 is driven through both the extension 4I and the handle 42, thereby rmly securing the vhandle in operative relation with the deflector vane 35.
From the square extension 4I, the handle 42 extends rearwardly and downwardly, terminating in a llug 44 which seats'upon a ange 45 extending rearwardly from the supplemental cover 28. This ange 45 is provided with an arcuate slot 46 constituting a raceway for the bolt 47. The bolt 41 on its under side is provided with a head 48 and on its upper side has a threaded portion 49 arranged to be engaged by a hand nut 53. When the nut 50 Vis loosened, the handle 42 and deiiector vane 35 may be moved Vto a desired position. Tightening of the nut V5I) draws the head 48 of the bolt 41-againstthe under side of the flange 45, thereby firmly securing the handle A42 and deflector vane 35 in the desired position.
The fuel deflector vane 35 is provided in its lower foremost portion with an enlargement' or bulb 5|, the foremost edge of which extends for-l wardly beyond the jet head 2| while its sides 5Ia, 5| b merge into the plate-like portion of the deilector vane 35. -The function of Vthis enlargement 5| is to cause the preponderant amount of fuel'within the central portion of the mouth portion I9 Ato be more equally Vproportioned laterally.
If banks of fuely are formed on the left or right side of the rebox, they can be burned away and the fire leveled out by so adjusting the deflector vane 35 as to starve the banked side and feed more fuel to the opposite side. Thus, if it is desired to starve the left side of the rebox, the deector vane 35 is moved so that its lower rearward edge is nearer the left side of the` riser I4. The closer the lower rearward edge of the deilector vane 35 is'to the left side of the riser,
the less fuel will be fed to the left side of the fireboX. Similarly, banks may be removed from the rightY side of the firebox. Should a bank enlargement 5| always remains in a position to cause a lateral spreading of the preponderant amount of fuel in the central portion of the discharge mouth I9.
The deflector vane constructed according to this invention has been found to be `eifective in controlling the quantities of fuel fed into the zone of action of the distributor system, such control of fuel being accomplished without appreciable interference to the passage of fuel through the riser conduit. In a furnace having a wall with a firing opening therein, a Stoker for feeding fuel to said furnace comprising a `riser conduit having an upwardly extending portion and a forwardly directed discharge mouth in communication with said firing opening, means below the level of said discharge mouth for urging fuel upwardly lthrough said riser conduit in a core shaped mass, distributing means at the discharge mouth of said riser conduit including a distributor vplate and a distributor jet head at the rear. of said distributor plate, said jet'head having a front face provided with a plurality of jet openings for emitting blasts of pressure fluid oversaid distributor plate, and a fuel deflector vane associated with said distributing means and arrangedv to act on the fuel prior to the action thereon of the pressure fluid blasts issuing from said jet head, said deector vane including an' upright forward edge disposed mainly Vin the vertical plane of the front face of .said jet head and including a lower portion extending a slight 4distance forwardly of said front face, said deflector vane being pivotally mounted at substantially its forward end for movement about an upright axis, said vane being .disposed in said conduit with its pivotal raxis lying in a .plane `extending transversely of the flow of fuel through .the .conduit and coinciding substantialiy lwith the plane of the front face kof ysaid jet head, said deflectorvane being arranged with no part of its extended axis passing intorthe upwardly vdirected portion of said riser conduit.
3. In a furnace having a wall with a firing opening therein, a stoker for feeding fuel to said furnace comprising a riser conduit having an upwardly extending portion and `a forwardly directed discharge mouth in communication with said ring opening, means below the level of said discharge mouth for urging fuel upwardly through said riser conduit in a core shaped mass, distributing means at the discharge mouth of said riser conduit including a distributor plate and a distributor jet head at the rear of said distributor plate, said jet head having a front face provided with a plurality of jet openings for emitting blasts of pressure fluid over said distributor plate, and a fuel defector vane associated with said distributing means and arranged to act on the fuel prior to the action thereon of the pressure fluid blasts issuing from said jet head, said deector vane including an upright forward edge disposed mainly in the vertical plane of the front face of said jet head and including a lower portion having .an enlarged forward end extending a slight distance forwardly of said front face, said deilector vane being pivotally mounted at substantially its forward end for movement about an upright axis, said vane being disposed in said conduit with its pivotal axis lying in a plane extending transversely of the fiow of fuel through the conduit and coinciding substantially with the planeV of the front face of said jet head, said deflector vane being arranged with no part of its extended axis passing into the upwardly directed portion of said riser conduit.
4. In a furnace having a wall with a firing opening therein, a stoker for feeding fuel to said furnace comprising a riser conduit having an upwardly extending portion and a forwardly directed discharge mouth in communication with said firing opening, means below the level of said discharge mouth for urging fuel upwardly through said riser conduit in a core shaped massjdistributing means at the discharge mouth of said riser conduit including a distributor plate and a distributor jet head at the rear of said distributor plate, said jet head having a front face provided with a plurality of jet openings for emitting blasts of pressure fluid over said distributor plate, and a fuel deflector vaneassociated with said distributing means and arranged to act on the fuel prior to the action thereon of the pressure fluid blasts issuing from said jet head, said deflector Vane including an upright forward edge the lower portion of which is enlarged and extends a slight distance' forward of the front face of said jet head and the upper portion of which forward edge is disposed rearward of the lower portion, said deiiector Vane being pivotally mounted at substantially its forward end for movement about an upright axis, said Vane being disposed in said conduit with its pivotal axis lying in a plane extending transversely of the flow of fuel through the conduit and coinciding substantially with the plane of vthe front face of said jet head, said deilector Vane being arranged with no part of its extended axis passing into the upwardly directed portion of said riser conduit.
