UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFIGE.
GHARLOTTA H. GARLSON, OF LEE, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,094, dated March 11, 1879; application filed September 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLOTTA HELENA OARLSON, of Lee, in the county-of Kent, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Additions to Stays, Corsets, or Body-Belts, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce stays, corsets, or body-belts capable of supporting and improving the figure of the wearer, and particularly that part thereof called the abdomen.
Corsets have been made with straps at the lower part of the front to aid in supporting the abdomen and a band across the front and lower part of the abdomen has been connected at its ends to wings upon the corset.
My invention is made for supporting the abdomen and preventing the same being pressed downwardly by the corsets, so that the natural and graceful shape of the person will be maintained.
I employ two flaps, that are attached to the sides of the corset below the waist, with the bottom edges of the flaps corresponding to the bottom edges of the corsets at the seams; but such flaps are shaped so that when they are passed across the person they lap upon the corset, but extend considerably below the lower edge of the corset, and thereby pass beneath the abdomen sufficiently to support the The accompanying drawings illustrate the manner in which 1 carry my invention into effect.
Figure 1 is a view of the corset fastened, showing it with the binders or flaps applied thereto, but unlaced and spread open. Fig. 2 shows the same corset laced with the binders or flaps partially closed; and Fig. 3 shows the same corset with binders or flapswholly laced, and as it should be when worn. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are corresponding views to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of another corset constructed according to my invention, where the binders or flaps are divided into two parts.
(a a are the binders or flaps; c c, hooks for keeping same in position.
Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show the binders or flaps secured by laces in front; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show them secured by husk-hooks, with laces b b at side to adjust the fitting where required.
Having now described the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be used, I claim- In combination with a corset, the flaps a a, attached at their ends to the side or hip portions of the corset, and with their lower edges coinciding with the lower edges of the corset at the seams, the said flaps being shaped so as to lap upon the corset, but extend in front of and beneath the abdomen, and having laces or connections for uniting the flaps at the front, and the hooks on the corset to hold the flap down in position, substantially as set forth.
CHARLOTTA HELENA OARLSON.
