V I Inventor 5 A? gjameszsskaase Attorneys Patented Sept. 20, 1938 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in paper receptacles, and more particularly to a novel cigarette package, or package for other contents.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a cigarette package which can be conveniently opened and equally as conveniently closed.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a cigarette package which can be quickly snapped open so that a cigarette can be extracted.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide a cigarette package constructed of a single sheet of material so assembled as to incorporate a closure and means for operating the same.
These and various other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings:-
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the package.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevational view of the package with the closure in open position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional View on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the closure in open position.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view on line lI of Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 represents a plan view of the blank.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen in Fig. 8, that numeral 5 generally refers to the paper blank. It is preferable that the paper be rather stiif and is cut to provide an elongated rectangular piece, capable of being bent on the lines ab to define the side walls 6! and the end wall 8 and also capable of being bent on the lines cd to define the overlapping end wall sections 99.
At the upper edges of the side walls 6 and 1 short flaps I and II are provided adjacent the end wall sections 9. A closure flap I2 comprising an elongated tongue I3 extends from the upper edge of the end wall 8. All this construction is integral. The fiap I2 is provided with a longitudinally extending reinforcing rib or depression is and. additional reinforcing ribs I are provided along the sides 6-1 and the end wall 8. The upper portion of the end wall 8 is provided with an outwardly bulged button I6, which at its upper end is connected to the closure flap I2 in a manner and for a purpose to be described in detail.
The upper edge portions of the side walls 61 as well as the end wall sections 9-9 are provided with narrow marginal portions H which are bent inwardly and made arcuate as shown in Fig. 5'.
Elongated bottom forming flaps I8 are pro- 10 vided along the lower edge of the side walls 6-|, wall 8 and end wall sections 99 and these are creased as along the lines I9 so as to form the bottom for the package.
The package is formed by bending on the lines a to 02 inclusive, bringing the end wall sections 9-9 into overlapping relation and then secured together as by adhesive. The flaps I0-II are folded together one over the other and then secured together in the same manner.
The free end portion of the flap I2 is bent upon itself to form a tongue 2| on the under side thereof and a finger grip tab 22 in advance of said tongue. The tongue 2I is designed to be inserted in a slot 26, formed in the flaps I6 and II, to 25 lock the flap I2 in closing position in a manner presently referred to in detail.
Reverting to the flap I2 and button I6, these parts are so arranged that the flap I2 is hinged at its rear corners, as at I2, to the upper rear corners of the side walls 6 and l for swinging movement thereon into opening and closing positions. The button I6 is flexible inwardly and reactive outwardly and comprises a top part I6 forming a rearwardly extending lever portion on the flap I2 on the opposite side of the axis of movement of the flap, whereby under inward flexing of said button, as by thumb or finger pressure, the top, or lever portion, I6 exerts a leverage in one direction on the flap I2 to swing the same into opening position. Conversely under outward reaction 'of said button I6 leverage is exerted in the opposite direction by said portion I6 to close said flap l2.
The tongue 2| is inclined in the proper direction; 1. e., toward the axis of movement of the flap I2, to facilitate insertion thereof in the slot 26 and its removal therefrom under swinging movement of said flap, said tongue frictionally coacting with the slot to hold the flap I2 closed.
The inwardly bent arcuate portions ll of the side walls 6 and I receive the side edges of the flap I2 therebetween and prevent the latter from buckling outwardly in its closed position. As will be understood the portions I! are adapted to be bulged outwardly under pressure exerted against the end wall 8 and end wall sections 9 to thereby release the flap l2.
It is to be understood that the package can be made of tin or other flexible material suitable for the purpose.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A container comprising top, side and end walls, respectively, of relatively stifi flexible material, the top wall having an opening therein, a closure flap for said opening having rear corners hinged to the upper corners of said side walls adjacent one end Wall, said end wall having formed integrally therewith an inwardly flexible outwardly reactive button including a top part forming a lever-like rear extension on said flap on the relatively opposite side of the axis of movement of the flap whereby under flexing and reaction of said button the flap is swung to opening and. closing positions respectively.
2. A container comprising top, side and end walls, respectively, of relatively stiff flexible material, the top wall having an opening therein, a closure flap for said opening having rear corners hinged to the upper corners of said side walls adjacent one end wall, said end wall having formed integrally therewith an inwardly flexible outwardly reactive button including a top part forming a lever-like rear extension on said flap on the relatively opposite side of the axis of movement of the flap whereby under flexing and reaction of said button the flap is swung to opening and closing positions, respectively, said top wall having a slot therein in advance of the opening, and said flap having a tongue thereon insertable into said slot to frictionally lock the flap in closing position, the tongue being inclined from the slot toward the axis of movement of the flap to facilitate its removal from said slot.
3. A container comprising top, side and end walls, respectively, of relatively stiff flexible material, the top wall having an opening therein, a closure flap for said opening having rear corners hinged tothe upper corners of said side walls adjacent one end wall, said end wall having formed integrally therewith an inwardly flexible outwardly reactive button including a top part forming a lever-like rear extension on said flap on the relatively opposite side of the axis of movement of the flap whereby under flexing and reaction of said button the flap is swung to opening and closing positions, respectively, the side walls being provided with concave marginal edges receiving the flap therebetween in the closing position of the latter to prevent the same from flexing outwardly, said marginal edges bulging outwardly under pressure exerted against the end Walls to thereby free said extension.
