3 Claims.
This invention relates to lamps and more particularly to a lamp which is adapted to provide diflused light which may be reflected either upwardly or downwardly or both.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a lamp structure for providing diffused light, means for adjustably supporting the reflectors so that the light rays may be directed or spread to the desired degree.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lamp structure which may be used as a floor or table lamp wherein the light bulbs are sub stantially concealed in reflectors which may be adjusted relative to the light bulbs so as to control the diflusion of the light rays.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a light structure for this kind means for cooling the reflectors positioned about the light bulbs.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an improved means for supporting a portion of the indirect light reflector so that light rays may be projected upwardly and downwardly from between this portion of the inverted reflector.
Still another object of this invention is to provide in a light or lamp structure, a plurality of annular louvers. and supporting means therefor so as to prevent glare from the reflector from a position laterally therefrom in addition to conconfining the light rays in a particular field.
To the above ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein are shown several embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical section of a modified form of switch structure for the several light bulbs, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary top plan of the device.
Referring to the drawing the numeral i0 designates generally a standard which is provided with a base structure H at the lower end thereof. This standard it! is of tubular construction and is mounted in an annular flange l3 provided in the upper portion of the base ii. The base ll comprises a plate i2 to which is secured as by a bolt i l, a second or lower plate H5. The lower plate carries a plurality of feet i6 which include cushioning members H. A hollow body I8 is disposed above the base plate 12 and is provided with an annular outer portion l9 terminating in a dependent flange 26 which engages about the two plate members I2 and I5.
A lower reflector 21 provided with an annular lower flange 22 is supported on .a cylindrical supporting member 23 carried by a sleeve 24. The supporting member 23 engages about the flange 22 and contactswith a shoulder 25 provided between the lower end of the reflector 2| and the annular flange 22. The supporting member 23 is connected to the sleeve 24 by means of an annular flange 26 and a plurality of vents 21 are provided through this flange 26 to permit air to enter the cylindrical supporting member 23 and rise upwardly into the reflector 2|. The sleeve 2d is adjustably secured along the length of the tubular standard ID by means of set screws 28 or the like. The standard I0 is provided at a point below the upper end thereof with an annular rib or bead 29 which limits the downward movement of the shield supporting sleeve 24. An upper rib 36 is provided adjacent the upper end of the standard In and this rib 30 limits the upward movement of the sleeve 24.
A lamp socket supporting member 3| is secured to the upper end of the tubular standard Ill and a pair of lamp sockets 32 are secured to the supporting member 3| in substantially upwardly divergent relation and light bulbs 33 engage the sockets 32 within the reflector 2|. A tubular conduit 34 is disposed concentrically of the standard It] and extends downwardly through an opening 35 provided in the hollow base member l8 and is. connected to the base structure by a connector 36 of a type commonly called Hickey which includes a pair of threaded sleeve members 31 disposed in spaced apart relation and connected together by means of arcuate arms 38. In this manner the electric wires may be extended through the hollow base i i into the lower end oi'the conduit 34 and then brought upwardly through a similar connector 39 which is secured tion 44 which is connected at its outer portion to a downwardly extending frusto-conical shield portion 45 terminating in a rib or bead 46 at the lower end thereof. The reflector 43 is provided at its inner portion with a sleeve 41 engaging in a socket or annular supporting member 48 carried by a cylindrical member 49." The cylindrical.
member 49 is disposed about the socket 4| and is provided at its lower end with an inverted frusto-conical portion 50 having holes 5| therethrough so that air rising upwardly in the reflector 2| may pass upwardly through the cylindrical member 49 and about the socket 4|.' The cylindrical supporting member 49 is secured at its lower end to a nut 52 which is threaded onto the nipple 40. The nut 52 is provided with a reduced upper portion 53 providing a shoulder or seat against which the lower end of the supporting member 495ll engages. The lower end of the supporting member 4950 is detachably secured to the nut 52 by means of a set screw 54.
An upper reflector 55 is disposed above the reflector 43 being secured thereto in upwardly spaced relation by means of a plurality of bracket members 56. The reflector 55 comprises an inner reflector member 51 and an outer reflector member 58 which is formed by turning over or reverting the material of which the reflector 51 is constructed and then extending the material downwardly at its upper portion as at 59 to provide a substantially cylindrical portion 59 and the lower end of the cylindrical portion 59 is secured to the upper end of a frusto-conical portion 60. The lower end of the frusto-conical portion 60 terminates in a dependent flange 6| which is spaced from the upper end or wall of the frustoconical shield portion 45. The inner reflector 51 is provided with a plurality of circumferentially arranged button hole slots 62 in which'a plurality of louver supporting bolts 63 engage. A plurality of annular or cylindrical louvers 64 are mounted on the supporting bolts 63 and are disposed in concentric relation being concentric to the reflector 51 and the center of the standard In.
The base structure U as shownin Figure 1 is provided with a pair of switch members 65 and 66 which are disposed on the annular portion l9 and are adapted to be connected to the wires or conductors leading to the light bulbs 33 and 42. Preferably these switch members 65 and 66 are of a type which will permit the lighting of the light bulbs in either reflector 2| or 55 or both or if desired any one or more of the light bulbs in the lower reflector 2 I.
, In Figure 4 there is'shown a slightly modified form of this light structure wherein the supporting sleeve 23 is provided with a plurality of switch members 65 and 66. This structure may be used where the standard Ill is constructed as part of a' floor lamp or the like. In this form the lower inverted shield or reflector 2W is similar in every detail to the reflector 2| and light bulbs and sockets similar to the light bulbs and sockets shown in Figure 1 are positioned interiorly of the reflector 2| In the use of this lamp structure the light bulbs 33 and 42 are adapted to be connected to a suitable source of current supply and a selected one or both of the switches 65 and 66 may be closed to light up the desired light bulbs. The upper reflector structure 43 may be initially adjusted by rotation of the supporting nut 52 so as to adjust the reflector 43 relative to the light bulbs 33 and also relative to the light bulb 42. The desired spread of light rays may be provided by vertical adjustment of the inverted reflector 2|. This adjustment is made by means of the set screws 28.
.When the light bulb 42 is lighted the rays therefrom will be projected upwardly by the reflecting upper side of the reflector portion 44 and by meansof the inner reflector 51. In addition thereto certain light rays will pass between the lower end' of the reflector 5i and the upper side of the reflector 44 and then out through the space 61 between the reflector 55 and the re flector 43. The annular louvers 64 may be readily removed for replacement of the light bulb 42 by unthreading the lock nuts 68 which are threadably mounted on the bolts 63 and engage on opposite sides of each button hole slot 62. By providing a space between the upper reflector 55 and the reflector 43, the heat from the light bulb 42 may be readily dissipated in addition to providing means for the passing of certain light rays outwardly and downwardly about the exterior of'the reflector 43.
What is claimed is:
1. In a lamp structure including a base, a. a
standard secured to and extending upwardly of said base, a plurality of socket members, means securing said socket members to the upper portion of said standard, an inverted reflector above said socket members, means supporting said reflector from the upper end of said standard, a second reflector opposed to said first reflector and disposed thereabove, means engaging said standard and said second reflector for supporting said second reflector, a socket member disposed concentrically of said second reflector for supporting a light bulb above said second reflector, said second reflector having a substantially cone shaped reflecting upper surface, a third reflector disposed above said second reflector, bracket means supporting said third reflector above said second reflector, an outwardly flared apron integral with said third reflector and extending outwardly and downwardly thereof, a plurality of annular louvers disposed concentrically of said third reflector, bolts secured to said louvers, said third reflector having a plurality of circumferentially arranged button hole slots to receive said bolts for detachably supporting said louvers.

In a lamp structure including a base, a standard secured to and extending upwardly of said base, a plurality of socket members, means securing said socket members to the upper portion of said standard, an inverted reflector about said socket members, means supporting said reflector from the upper end of said standard, a second reflector opposed to said first reflector and disposed thereabove, means engaging said standard and said second reflector for supporting said second reflector, a socket member disposed concentrically of said second reflector for supporting a light bulb above said second reflector, said means including a threaded coupling whereby said second reflector may be Vertically adjusted relative to said socket member therefor, said second reflector having a substantially cone shaped reflecting upper surface, a third reflector disposed above said second reflector, bracket means supporting said third reflector above said second reflector, an outwardly flared apron integral with said third reflector and extending outwardly and downwardly thereof, a plurality of annular louvers disposed concentrically of said third reflector, bolts secured to said louvers, said third reflector having a plurality of circumferentially arranged button hole slots to receive said bolts for detachably supporting said louvers,

In a lamp structure including a base, a standard secured to and extending upwardly of said base, a plurality of socket members, means securing said socket members to the upper portion of said standard, an inverted reflector about said socket members, means slidable on said standard supporting said reflector on said standard, means holding said slidable means in adjusted position, a second reflector opposed to said first reflector and disposed thereabove, means engaging said standard and said second reflector for supporting said second reflector, a socket member disposed concentrically of said second reflector for supporting a light bulb above said second reflector, said second reflector having a substantially cone shaped reflecting upper surface, a third reflector disposed above said second reflector, bracket means supporting said third reflector above said'second reflector, an outwardly flared apron integral with said third reflector and extending outwardly and downwardly thereof, a plurality of annular louvers disposed concentrically of said third reflector, bolts secured to said louvers, said third reflector having a plurality of circumferentially arranged button hole slots to receive said bolts for detachably supporting said louvers.
