3 Claims.
This invention relates generally to separators or screening machines but more particularly to a combination screening and scrubbing machine for use in foundries.
' One of its objects is the provision of an ellicient apparatus of this character which will effectually and thoroughly disintegrate and separate the molding sand from the castings and at the same time cause a scrubbing action on the castings to remove any adhering sand therefrom,
whereby the castings are discharged from the machine in a clean condition.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination screening and scrubbing machine which is simple, compact and sturdy in construction, which imparts to the mold-flask contents a vigorous and positive screening and scrubbing action, and which requires a minimum expenditure of power to operate it.
Other features of the invention reside in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the machine embodying my invention. Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof. Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the machine taken on line 3-3, Figure 1. Figures 4 and 5 are cross sections thereof taken on the correspondingly numbered lines in Figure 1. Figure 6 is an enlarged cross-section of a modified form of scrubbing deck. Figure 7 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In connection with the invention, a vibratory or shaking body or carrier is provided which may be of any suitable construction, that shown in the drawings, by way of example, being of a type to gyrate in a vertical plane and consisting of side plates l0, l0 between which are arranged means for effecting the combined screening of the molding sand dumped from a molding flask after the pouring of the castings, and also for disintegrating or breaking up the baked pieces or lumps of 1934, Serial No. 737,937
ment of the machine and imparts to the live frame or body a positive circular or gyrating movement whereby substantially all points of such body are vibrated in a circular path or orbit and to this end the shaft has eccentric portions M, as seen 5 at the left in Figure 4, on which said body is supported, the latter having roller or like bearings arranged in its side walls and in which the eccentric portions of the shaft are journaled. For the purpose of maintaining the machine in 10 proper balance, the shaft I2 is provided with counter-balanced wheels l6. To steady and hold the gyrating body in its proper balanced position on the shaft, its opposite end portions are yieldingly suspended or supported by any suitable 15 means, such for example, as coil springs ll arranged in housings I8 secured to the side plates l6! and seated at their lower ends on supporting plates or brackets l9 secured to the beams l I. For a purpose which will hereinafter appear, this 20 body is preferably pitched or inclined to the horizontal in a direction transversely of the gyrating axis of the body.
Disposed between the side plates Ill and extending lengthwise of the machine: body, is a 25 screening deck or platform 26 which may be supported in any suitable manner upon the side plates and which may be provided at its receiving or headend with a retaining Wall 2!, while its tail or discharge end is left unobstructed to allow 30 the plus or unscreened material to be discharged therefrom. As seen in Figure 3, this screen deck slopes toward its discharge end to allow the unscreened material, such as the sand lumps and castings, to flow by gravity over the deck. In the example shown in the drawings, only one of such screens is depicted although it will be understood that any number of them may be employed disposed in superposed relation to effect any desired screening action. The screen deck 20 or the uppermost deck of a series is disposed in the upper portion of the gyrating body and for the most part at one side of the axis of the operating shaft I2.
Disposed in communicating relation with the discharge end of the screen deck 20 and at the opposite side of the shaft l2, to receive the plus or unscreened material therefrom, is a scrubbing deck or trough-like member, indicated generally by the numeral 22, which acts to break up or disintegrate the large lumps of sand delivered thereto and. also to effectually remove the sand adhering to the castings which have been previously dumped with the molding sand onto the screen deck 20. This scrubbing deck extends transversely of the machine in the general direction of the operating shaft l2 with its bottom preferably disposed below the shaft axis and with its open upper end in juxtaposition to the discharge end of the screen deck. The lower portion or bottom of each scrubbing deck is approximately semi-circular in cross section and is preferably roughened on its interior surface for the purpose of creating frictional contact between the material and the trough walls, so as to impart to the material a tumbling-like action in response to the gyrating motion of the machine body, and thereby effect a complete disintegration of the sandlumps as well as a thorough cleaning of the castings. By way of example, in the embodiment of the invention. shown in Figures 1-5, inclusive, the substantially trough-shaped scrubbing deck 22 consists of an inner section or shell 23 of screen clothing or like material and an outer solid portion or section 24 spaced therefrom, the trough being secured to the side plates H] in any suitable manner. In its bottom, the outer section 24 has one or more openings 25 for the discharge of the sand disintegrated in the scrubbing deck. Adjacent its discharge end, the scrubbing deck is preferably provided with a suitable partition or bailiing means 26, which, while permitting the castings after being cleaned, to find their way through the discharge-opening 21 at the end of such deck, retard their direct movement to such discharge so as to assure the complete removal of any sand therefrom.
As shown in Figure 3, the scrubbing deck is preferably pitched laterally with its open upper end slightly facing the screen deck 20, so that during the gyration of the machine-body the material in the scrubbing deck is effectually volcanoed and cascaded as it travels therethrough.
For the purpose of guiding and directing the unscreened material from the deck 20 into the scrubbing deck 22, I provide a bridge panel or apron 2B which extends partially over the top of the scrubbing deck in the manner shown in Figures 1 and 3 and which terminates at one end short of the adjoining side plates Ill to provide a feed passage 29 leading to the inlet end of the scrubbing deck. A flange 36 rising from this apron serves to properly direct the material toward the passage 29.
In Figures 6 and 7, I have shown a modified scrubbing deck construction consisting of an outer shell 35 and an inner shell composed of a series of rods 32, 33, of alternately large and small cross section, which extend lengthwise of the outer shell and may be welded or likewise secured to supporting members 34 applied to the inner wall of the shell. By this construction, the different sized rods form a. corrugated surface for creating the desired frictional contact between them and the material traveling through the trough to effect a tumbling or turning of the material in response to the gyrating action of the machine body. These rods 32 and 33 are suitably spaced to provide openings between which the sand may be discharged, it being understood that the outer shell of the trough is provided with openings 35 for the discharge of the sand and an opening 36 for the discharge of the cleaned castings.
I claim as my inVention:--
1. A machine of the character described, comprising a gyrating body, means for gyrating said body in substantially circular paths lying in planes at substantially right angles to the axis of the gyrating means, a screening element mounted on said body for receiving the material to be treated, and a substantially trough-shaped scrubbing deck mounted on said body in juxtaposition to one end of the screening element with its bottom below the plane of the latter and its open top in communicating relation with said end of the screening element to receive the plus material therefrom, said trough having its bottom curved substantially in the direction of the paths of motion of the gyrating body to transmit to the material discharged therein a tumbling-like action and having a discharge at one end for the non-screenable matter contained in the material.
2. A combination screening and scrubbing machine, comprising a substantially balanced gyrating body including a shaft and means thereon for gyrating said body, a screen deck disposed on said body at one side of and above the axis of said shaft, and a scrubbing deck disposed at the opposite side of said shaft-axis in juxtaposition to and below the adjoining end of the screen deck to receive the plus material therefrom, said screen deck extending lengthwise of the gyrating body to cause a gravity flow of the plus material toward its discharge end into the scrubbing deck, the latter having a foraminous bottom and extending transversely of said gyrating body to effect a gravity how of the material in a corresponding direction and having a discharge therein for the scrubbed material.
3. A combination screening and scrubbing machine, comprising a substantially balanced gyrating body including a shaft and means thereon for gyrating said body, a screen deck disposed on said body at one side of and above the axis of said shaft, and a scrubbing deck disposed at the opposite side of said shaft-axis in juxtaposition to and below the adjoining end of the screen deck to receive the plus material therefrom, said screen deck extending lengthwise of the gyrating body to cause a gravity how of the plus material toward its discharge end into the scrubbing deck, the latter having a foraminous bottom and extending transversely of said gyrating body to effect a gravity flow of the material in a corresponding direction and having a discharge therein for the scrubbed material, and bafliing means in said scrubbing deck in advance of its discharge for retarding the flow of material therethrough.
