Description

c. E. HARRis WORK HOLDER Aug. 9, 1938.
Filed Aug. 4, 1937 Inventor Clarence E Har r-is Patented Aug. 9, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
(Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as
amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to a work holder.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a simple, eflicient and adjustable device for holding a thin sheet of material adjacent'to the point of out being made by a circular saw while at the same time serving as a guard for the saw.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, where- Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of the work holder forming the subject of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in'end elevation.
Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views on the corresponding lines of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, there is shown a. cutter 5 carried by a rotatable shaft 6 and adapted to cut a thin sheet of material I which is carried past the cutter on the plate or support 8.
A fixed shaft 9 disposed above the cutter carries an arm Ii] which has a split bearing l I whereby it is securely clamped in position of adjustment by means of a bolt I2. The arm serves as a guard for the cutter and has a slot it for receiving a portion of the cutter. A stud bolt l4 mounted in the lower part of the arm carries a pair of levers I5--i 5 on opposite sides of the arm and the levers are held against removal by means of nuts Iii-l 6.
A roller ii is carried on the lower end of each lever by means of a bolt it. The rollers are disposed on opposite sides of the cutter 5 and engage 5 the sheet 1 adjacent the point of the cut being made by the cutter.
The levers are held in a position which is substantially at right angles to the arm and which maintains the rollers in engagement with the 10 sheet I by means of set screws l9-l9. These screws are threaded in a plate 20 fixed to the arm it) and each screw carries a nut 2| for engaging the plate. The end of each screw engages the upper corner of the corresponding lever and its 15 position of adjustment is so determined that the roller will hold the sheet 1 onto its support and counteract the tendency of the sheet to be raised by the cutter.
I claim:
In combination with a circular cutter, a shaft above the cutter, a guard arm carried by the shaft and disposed tangentially to the cutter, said arm having a slot for receiving a portion of the cutter, a pair of levers pivotally mounted on the lower end of the guard arm and disposed on opposite sides of the cutter, a workholding roller on each lever and positioned adjacent the cutting point of the cutter, and a pair of set screws carried by the arm, each set screw engageable with an end face of one lever above the point of pivotal mounting of the lever and holding the lever approximately perpendicular to the guard arm.
CLARENCE E. HARRIS.
