VANITY CASE Filed Oct. 22, 1957 IN VEN TOR. I
A TTORNEY JamesLYbung'husband Patented July 26, 1938 UNITED. STATES 2,125,040 VANITY CASE PA E T OFFICE James L. Iounghusband, Chicago, 111.. I Application October 22, 1937, Serial'No. 170,438
. 6 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination plastic and metal vanity case the bottom of which also forms the holding plaque for a cosmetic such as rouge.
Among the objects of my invention is to create a thin modern streamlined vanity case having a construction producing a minimum exterior and maximum interior, said vanity case having sides made of preferably colorful plastic material, and metal top and bottom portions; to create a vanity case in which a metal portion serves the double function of a cosmetic holding plaque as well as the bottom of the container; to supply a vanity case having a hinge member swingably attaching the metal top to the plastic sides; to show a vanity case having a thin metal bottom strengthened by designs so that in use the bottom member will not be pushed in so as to break the cosmetic held on the inside of said'bottom portion, and such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying'drawing preferred embodiments of my invention, yet I Wish it understood that the same are susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a sectional view of my vanity case having a flat bottom, and Fig. 2 a curved bottom; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the closed top; Fig. 4 is an inside view of the open top of the vanity case; Fig. 5 is a view of one form of the outside bottom of the vanity case.
Referring to the embodiment selected to illustrate the invention, my vanity case II] has a substantially circular or oval member I l forming the side walls thereof. The side walls are preferably of plastic material, thereby permitting a wide choice of colors to contrast with the metal top l2 and metal bottom I 3 of my vanity case.
The plastic side Walls II at the bottom have a slight inturned flange l4 tosupport and hold a metal bottom disk or plaque l3 of smaller diameter than the opening between opposite edges of the flange M. The plaque l3 may have a step l5 at its edges to engage the flange l4 so that the plaque l3 may be flush with the end of the side Walls I I.
The side walls tend to extend slightly inwardly toward the bottom thereof so that acurved plaque l3 once positioned will remain in place because an upward movement would tend to flatten the curved plaque and increase its width thus placing greater force on the edges to retain it in position against the side walls.
The plaque I3 may be of any desirable kind of metal, and it is only necessary to finish or polish the outer surface which will form the exposed outside bottom portion of my vanity case. The inside surface need not be finished, and acts as a 5 rigid surface on which the cosmetic, such as rouge is placed. It is Well known that rouge andthe like must be held on a rigid support (not disturbed by ordinary usage) such as metal, in order to prevent the cosmetic from crumbling. Generally it has been necessary to have a separate rouge plaque placed in the vanity case. With'my invention the rouge plaque serves also as'the bottom of the vanity case.
The metal top l2 at its back upper edge has a loop Hiholdi'ng a U-shaped wire l1 having a pair of spaced short ends l8 suitablyanchored by ad- .hesive, friction or the like in spaced holes IS in the top edge portions of the sidewalls l'l. This permits the top to swing to open and closed positioii. The top has a downwardly extending flange 20 adapted to engage the side walls Il and hold the topin closed position by friction grip of raised portions 2i pressing into depressions 22. a
The top may have a slightcut out portion 23 25 connecting with acut out portion 24 on the side wall to permit the'liftof a finger of a usertdop en the top. Other suitable means for opening such as a lip on the top may be used.
The modern vanity case must be thin so as to fit into a ladys purse but it also must have sufficient room in the interior to accommodate the cosmetic. These requirements demand thin walls for the vanity case. It has not been desirable to use plastics because a plastic vanity case sufiiciently strong to stand up would be too thick. With my combination of metal cap and bottom, plastic can be used on the sides. Metal even as thin as 12/1000 of an inch can be successfully used, although any desirable thickness is contemplated by my invention.
Where I use an extremely thin metal, I may use corrugations or ribs 25 of a desired design so as to strengthen the cap or bottom. This is particularly desirable in the bottom portion so as to prevent a user from pushing in on the metal and. crumbling the rouge or other cosmetic thereon.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A vanity case comprising a plastic member of desired color forming the side walls of the vanity case and having at its bottom portion a slight inturned flange, a metal bottom member of smaller size than the opening between opposite edges of the walls, said metal bottom member positioned on said flange, the inner surface of said metal bottom member forming a sufficiently rigid surface to prevent crumbling of a cake of rouge placed thereon, and the outer surface of said metal bottom memEber forming the bottom of said vanity case, and a metal cap swingably attached to said side walls.
2. A vanity case comprising a plastic member of desired color forming the side walls of the vanity case and having at its bottom portion a slight inturned flange, a metal. bottomv member of smaller size thanthe opening between; opposite edges of the walls, said metal bottom member having a step at its edges, said step positioned on said flange so that the metal bottom member is flush with the lower ends of the side walls, the inner surface of said metal v bottom member forming a sufliciently rigid surface to prevent crumbling of a cake of rouge placed thereon, and the outer surface of said metal bottom mlember forming the bottom of said vanity case, and a metal cap swingably attached to said side walls.
3. A vanity case comprising arplastic'memb'er of desired color forming the side walls of the vanity case and having at its bottom portion a slight inturned flange, said side walls extending downwardly and slightly inwardly, an upwardly curved metal bottom member of smaller size than the opening between opposite edges of the walls, said metal bottom member positioned on said flange and having its outer edges positioned against said side walls, the inner'surface of said metal bottom member forming a sumciently rigid surface to prevent crumbling of a cake of rouge placed thereon, and the outer surface of said metal bottom'member forming the bottom of said vanity case, and a metal cap swingably attached to said side walls.
-;4; A vanity case comprising a plastic member of desired color forming the side walls of the vanity case and having at its bottom portion a slight inturned flange, said side walls extending downwardly and slightly inwardly, an upwardly curved metal bottom member of smaller size than the opening between opposite edges of the walls,
said metal bottom member having a step at its edges, said step positioned on said flange and and slightly inwardly,
ing the bottom, of said vanity case, and a metal cap swingably attached to said side walls.
5. A vanitycase comprising a plastic member of desired color-forming the side walls of the vanity case, said side walls tapering downwardly a metal bottom member positioned within the opening between opposite portions of said side walls, the edges of said metal bottom member engaging the side walls so that an upward movement of said metal bottom member will tend towiden the same against the side walls and prevent displacement therefrom, said metal bottom member constructed to have the double function of acting as the bottom of the vanity case on its exterior and as a rouge holding plaque on its interior.
6. A thin, light, strong plastic and metal vanity case comprising a light substantiallycircular plastic member of desired color forming the side walls of the vanity case and having at its bottom portion a slight inturned flange, said side walls extending slightly convergingly downwardly, a
thin curved metal disc of smaller diameter than V the opening between opposite edges of the walls, said metal disc having a step at its outer edges, said step positioned on said flange so that the metal disc is flush with the lower ends of the side walls, the edges of the metal disc engaging the sidewalls adjacent their narrowest point so that an upward movement of the disc will tend to widen the same against said side walls and prevent'displacement of the metal disc, the inner surface of said metal 'disc being unfinished and forming a sufficiently rigid surface to prevent crumblingof a cake of rouge placed thereon, the outer polished surface of said metal disc forming the outer bottom of said vanity case,
and a metal cap swingably attached to said side walls.
