SEPARABLE BUTTON Filed Aug. 13, 1957 Patented July 26, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
3 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements iny separable buttons.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a separable button formed of two separable 5 sections comprising a head and base with a spring catch between the head and base when the sepa rable sections are assembled.
A further object of the invention is to provide `a separable button of the foregoing character y* wherein the spring catch between the head and base of the assembled button sections includes a resilient slidable element carried by the head of the button for interlocking engagement with a part of the base of the button.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a separable button wherein a spring latch connection between the head and base sections of the button includes a sliding spring comp-rising a pair of resilient legs for interlocking engagement with a spear head carried by the base section of the button.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a separable button wherein a slidably mounted spring pressed pin carried by the head section ofl the button is adapted to be engaged with an apertured spear head carried by the base section of the button for retaining the head and base sections in assembled relation.
With the above and other objects in View that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists inthe novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing and particularly to Figs. l to '1, the separable button is formed of two main parts, comprising a head section I5 and a base section I5. The head and base sections I5 and I6 are separably connected together by spring latch devices.
The head section I5' comprises a top plate Il of disk formation with a depending marginal flange I8 for engagement with the bottom disk plate I9 in a manner presently to appear, the central portion of the top plate I1 having an upstanding ornamental bulged portion to provide clearance for a part of the spring latch connection between the separable button sections I5 and IB.
The bottom plate I9 of the head section I5 carries a series of circumferentially spaced upstanding bosses 2l engageable with the bottom face of the top plate I'l for spacing the bottom plate I9 from the top plate, the marginal flange I8 on the top plate being swaged into retaining engagement with the marginal edge of the bottom plate I9; A central opening 22 is formed in the bottom plate I9 and is surrounded by a depending relatively short tubular neck 23. For purposes presently to appear, a cam-shaped boss 24 rises from the bottom plate I9 in transverse alignment withone'of the upset portions 2I and the marginal edge of the disk I 9 outwardly of the cam 24 has a lug 25 struck up therefrom.
A spring catch is slidably carried by the head section I5 of the button and is slidably mounted between the top and bottom plates I'I and I9 thereof in the space afforded by the upstanding projections 2| on the bottom plate I9, the spring catch being formed of a piece of resilient wire bent into U-shape and comprising side legs 26 connected at one end by the piece 21 that forms a finger grip. The side legs 26 of the spring catch are crenelated to provide pin receiving loops 28, while the terminal ends of the side legs 26 are flared outwardly as at 29. The spring catch is positioned in the head section I5 to have the side legs 26 thereof straddle the cam boss 24 and also the lug 25 while the marginal ange I8 upon the top plate I'I has a cut-away portion 30 as shown more clearly in Figs. 3 to 5 to permit outward sliding movement of the spring catch to the dotted line position shown in Figure 3, the cam boss 24 acting on crenelated portions of the side legs 26 to separate the pin receiving loops 28.
The base section I6 of the separable button comprises a disk 3l carrying an upstanding tubular neck 32 for end abutting engagement with the neck 23 depending from the bottom plate I9 of the head section I5 and said disk 3I of the base section has a pin 33 centrally rising therefrom and passing through the neck 32 to enter the neck 23 on the head section with the upper end of the pin 33 received in the upwardly bulged portion 20 in the top wall I'I of the head section. As shown more clearly in Figs. 5 and 6, the upper end of the pin 33 is provided with an enlarged conical head 34 defining a shoulder 35 beneath which the loop portions 28 of the side legs 26 of the spring catch are adapted to be positioned for retaining the pin 33 against lowering movement and to retain the head and base sections I5 and I6 of the separable button in assembled relation.
In the form of invention illustrated in Figs. 8 to 14, the separable button comprises a head section I 5a and a base section IGa separably connected thereto7 the head section I5a comprising a top plate I'Ia and a bottom plate ISa connected together by the marginal iiange I 8a on the top plate engaged with the peripheral edge of the bottom plate I9a. The plate |311 as shown in Figure 11 has two pairs of diametrically opposite struck-up lugs 2Ia and two other pairs of diametrically struck-up lugs 24a, an abutment lug 25a being struck-up from the plate IQa at the outer ends of each pair of lugs 24a.
In lieu of the form of spring catch shown in Figures 1 to 6, comprising the U-shaped resilient wire, there is provided a tensioned slidingrpi'n 26a carrying a rectangular frame 28a at one end thereof with a linger piece 27a depending from the outer end of the rectangular frame 28a. The sliding pin is mounted between the top and bottom plates Ila and |90, and incloses one of the upstanding lugs 25a, the sliding pin being selectively positioned at either side of the plateY ISa and a coil spring 36 coniined within the frame 23a engages at one end the end of the frame adjacent the pin 26a while the other end of the coil spring is engaged with the lug 25a. The nger piece 27a is movable through the side notch 36a in the flange I8a. The pin 26a normally extends across the slotted opening 36 formed centrally of the plate IQa, the lugs 24m in addition to forming a guide for the sliding frame 28a also cooperating with the upstanding lugs 2Ia to provide a space between the top and bottom plates IIa and I9a for the mounting of the sliding pin 26a.
As shown more clearly in Figs. 12 and 13, the base section I 6a of the separable button comprises a disk 3Ia from which a pin 33a, centrally rises, the upper end 34a of the pin being flattened for projection through the slotted opening 36 in the bottom plate I9a with the pin 26a received in the opening 35a. in the upper end 34a of the pin, the central portion of the top plate I'Ia, being bulged upwardly as at 20a to provide a clearance for the upper end of the pin 33a. The pin 26a is disengaged from the opening 35a in the upper end of the pin 33a upon an outward pull on the iinger piece 21a against the tension of the spring 36.
In each form of the invention, the upper end of the pin carried by the base section is shaped to pierce a garment or the like and while there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:-
1. In a separable button of the character described, head and base sections, a separable interlocking connection between the sections including a pin carried by the base section and. resilient means engageable therewith and slidably carried by the head section, the pin having a spear-shaped head defining a base shoulder and the resilient means including a U-shape resilient wire catch having the side legs straddling the pin, and the outer closed end of the catch constituting a linger-piece for slidably disengaging the legs from the pin.
2. In a separable button of the character described, head and base sections, a separable interlocking connection between the sections including a pin carried by the base section and resilient means engageable therewith and slidably carried by the head section, the pin having a spear-shaped` head defining a base shoulder and the resilient means including a U-shaped resilient wire catch having the side legs straddling the pin, and said head section being formed of disks with spaced up-set portions carried by one disk for spacing the disks to provide an area for the mounting of the wire catch.
`3. In a separable button of the character described, head and base sections, a separable interlocking connection between the sections including a pin carried by the base section and resilient means engageable therewith and slidably carried by the head section, the pin having a spear-shaped head defining a base shoulder and the resilient means including a U-shaped resilient wire catch having the side legs straddling the pin, the outer closed end of the catch constituting a finger-piece for slidably disengaging the legs from the pin, and said head section being formed of disks with spaced up-set portions carried by one disk for spacing the disks to provide an area for the mounting of the wire catch.
