This invention relates to typographical slug casting machines and is concerned with the mechanism therein for planing or smoothing the slug surface after casting.
In known forms of machines the face side of the slugs is machined by means of a router, cutter or the like after the casting operation, and before the slugs are ejected out of the mold. Since the revolving tool used requires special driving means, it has heretofore been mounted either on the mold slide (see Stouges Patent No. 1,982,033) or on the machine frame (see my own prior Patent No. 2,072,612). Its attachment to the mold slide has the disadvantage that the finishing tool and its means of attachment partake in the movements of the mold slide and are therefore subjected to vibration so that the machining of the slug is not always very accurate. To avoid this the second method of attachment, namely to the machine frame, maybe adopted, but this method is not entirely satisfactory, because, as is well-known in machines of this kind, the so-called vise frame should be tiltable downwardly towards the front in order to give access to the slug, and in order to tilt the frame downwardly it is necessary to release the coupling of the surfacing mechanism with the mold disc and to remove the surfacing mechanism itself out of the machine in order to free the path for the downward tilting.
The invention aims at removing this disadvantage and providing an arrangement in. which the finishing tool, while not influenced by the motion and the vibrations of the first elevator, can be tilted back and again brought into the operative position as may be required, without loosening any connection of the vise frame.
According to the invention, the surfacing mechanism is for this purpose mounted on the pivoted portion of the vise frame and movable therewith as a whole, and its adjustment in reference to the slug is preferably effected by a stop connected to the mold wheel slide.
In the drawing, illustrating by way of example only, one constructional form of the invention:-

In the drawing, a is the mold disc which carries in known manner the molds a and is arranged on the mold wheel slide b which at certain times is moved to and fro in order to bring the mold into close contact with the matrix line or to bring the cast slug in front of the ejector. The slug 2 located in the mold a is machined on its front face by a tool such as a router c for example.
In the constructional form illustrated, the router shaft is mounted in a casing .d which also contains the motor used for driving the routing tool. The whole of the casing containing the routing mechanism is mounted in a fixing sleeve 6 which near its front end, is globe-shaped at e The sleeve e rests in an outer sleeve 1 which is in turn mounted in a bearer g rigidly secured to the vise frame y of the machine by means of the screws 9 for example. The sleeve 2 is confined within the sleeve 1 by means of a nut or washer 7' threaded into the outer end of the sleeve 1 and which bears against an annular collar e of the sleeve 6 and presses the collar up against the annular shoulder r of the sleeve 1, all as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The vise frame y is tiltable in the usual manner about a. pivot 1/ on the machine frame.
The sleeve 1 is axially displaceable in the bearer g but is prevented from turning therein by a pin 2', which is screwed into the sleeve 1 and moves in a slot of the bearer 9. To the pin 1' is attached a spring is the other end of which is fast to a pin h which is screwed into the bearer g. The spring tends to pull the sleeve 1 (and therewith the sleeve e mounted in it, With the router and its driving mechanism) towards the mold. In order to limit the travelling path towards the mold, a buffer 'pin m is provided, the point of which contacts with an. abutment n securely fixed to the mold wheel slide. The buffer pin in is provided with a fine thread m with which it engages in a nut t affixed to the sleeve 7 by means of the screws for example. It can be turned by means of a milled head m and adjusted therewith, the adjustments made being recorded on the scale 0.
The orientation within the sleeve 1 of the sleeve c with the router spindle, is determined by set screws p, the spindle swinging about the globeshape front part 6 during the adjustment. This makes it possible for the operating router to be adjusted relatively to the front edge of the slug. The nut t for the threaded portion m is slotted and by pressing together the said slot by clamping screw q the spindle can be secured in its adjusted position.
The mode of operation of the device is as follows:-
When the vise frame 1/ is in its operative position, the pin m bears against the abutment n and thereby holds the whole surfacing mechanism in the correct position relatively to the mold disc and the mold. When the mold disc advances for the casting operation, and is retracted after the casting operation, the surfacing mechanism will partake in these movements owing to the action of the spring is and of the abutment pin m. When the mold disc is rotated after the casting operation, the router becomes operative and finishes the front face of the slug. When the vise frame y is tilted back about the pivot 1 the pin m is brought out of engagement with the abutment n and the mechanism can be moved forward until the shoulder 1' of the sleeve J comes into contact with the adjacent surface of the recess in the bearer 9. When the vise frame is returned into its operative position, the pin m again comes into engagement with the abutment n and restores the surfacing mechanism in its correct position relatively to the mold disc.
It should be understood that the mechanism described above may be modified in various ways. For example, in place of the router, a different surfacing tool may be inserted, while in place of the abutment m the stop 11. may be made adjustable. These and other modifications according to the conditions and requirements which have to be fulfilled fall within the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a typographical slug casting machine wherein a portion of the vise frame is movable for access to the slug and mold, the combination with a mold, a mold slide, and a slug trimming unit adapted to trim the printing faces of slugs in the mold, of means fixed to the aforesaid movable portion of the vise frame to support the slug trimming unit and relatively to which said unit is movable, and connections between the mold slide and the slug trimming unit whereby the two are caused to move in unison in the normal operation of the machine, said connections being arranged to be made and broken to permit the slug trimming unit to move with the movable portion of the vise frame as said portion is moved to and from its normal position.
2. In a typographical slug casting machine wherein a portion of the vise frame is movable for access to the slug and mold, the combination with a mold, a mold slide, and a slug trimming unit adapted to trim the printing faces of slugs in the mold, of means fixed to the aforesaid moveable portion of the vise frame to support the slug trimming unit and relatively to which said unit is movable, and connections between the mold slide and the slug trimming unit whereby the two are caused to move in unison in the normal operation of the machine, said connections being arranged to be made and broken automatically as the movable portion of the vise frame is moved to and from its normal position.
3. A combination according to claim 2, wherein the connections between the mold slide and the slug trimming unit are adjustable for determining the position of the slug trimming unit in relation to the slug.
4. A combination according to claim 2, wherein the slug trimming unit is constantly urged toward the mold by a spring action, and wherein the connections between the mold slide and the slug trimming unit comprise a stop pin associated with said unit and an abutment on the mold slide against which the stop pin banks when the movable portion of the vise frame occupies its normal position.
5. A combination according to claim 2, wherein the slug trimming unit is constantly urged toward the mold by a spring action, and wherein the connections between the mold slide and the slug trimming unit comprise a stop pin associated with said unit and an abutment on the mold slide against which the stop pin banks when the movable portion of the vise frame occupies its normal position, said stop pin being adjustable to vary the operative position of the slug trimming unit with reference to the mold.
6. In a typographical slug casting machine, the combination with a mold, a mold slide, and a slug trimming unit adapted to trim the printing faces of slugs in the mold, of means fixed to a part of the machine frame and adapted to support the slug trimming unit for movement with the mold slide, spring means urging the slug trimming unit toward the mold, and means for determining the operative position of said unit with reference to the mold, said position determining means comprising a stop pin associated with the slug trimming unit and an abutment on the mold slide against which the stop pin banks.
7. In a typographical slug casting machine, the combination with a mold, a mold slide, and a slug trimming unit adapted to trim the printing faces of slugs in the mold, of means fixed to a part of the machine frame and adapted to support the slug trimming unit for movement with the mold slide, spring means urging the slug trimming unit toward the mold, and means for determining the operative position of said unit with reference to the mold, said position determining means comprising a stop pin associated with the slug trimming unit and an abutment on the mold slide against which the stop pin banks, and said stop pin being adjustable to vary the operative position of the slug trimming unit with reference to the mold.
