IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLAS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,457, dated February 18, 1879 application filed December 28, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEONHARD GIRBARDT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrellas and Parasols, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a vertical cross-section of an umbrella constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof', part-ly in section.

The object of my invention is to ventilate au umbrella or parasol without affecting its general utility, one result of its ventilation being that the article is not liable to be turned inside out by sudden gusts of wind.

It consists iu the combination, with au umbrella-sta", of two sets -of ribs, having dit't'erent lengths, and two sets of stretchers, two runners, one to each set of stretchers, a primary cover, secured to thelong ribs and havin g a central Ventilating-opening, a supplemental cover, secured to the short ribs and arranged' above said opening, and a suitable device or devices 'to confine the runners, so that the supplemental cover is adapted to be raised up from the primary cover, to allow a current of air to pass through the ventilating-opening without exposing the latter from an upper direction, while at the same time the supplemental cover can be lowered so as to rest on the primary cover, whereby the ventilating.. opening is closed.

In the drawings, the letter A designates an umbrella statt' or handle, carrying a crownpiece, B, to which are connected two sets of ribs, C D. These ribs have different lengths, one set being of about the usual length of umbrella or parasol ribs, and the other set being made comparatively short.

The letters F G designate two sets of stretchers, which are respectively connected to the ribsG or D at one end, and connected to runners E and H at their opposite ends, the same being, moreover, arranged to alternate with each other. The runner E, carrying the stretchers of the long ribs C, is fitted on the staff A, while the runner H, carrying the stretchers of the short ribs, is tted to and capable of being moved on and off the other or main runner.

On the upper part of the staff Ais arranged a spring-catch, I, adapted to hold up the two runners E H. On the set of long ribs C is secured thel primary cover J ot' my umbrella or parasol, in the center of which cover I form an opening, a, while on the set of short ribs, D, is secured a supplemental cover, K,

theparts being so arranged that this lasty Vhen, however, the runner H of the supple' mental cover is left beneath the catch I, where it is unconned, the supplemental cover K falls orrests on the main cover by the weight of the parts, and the opening a is closed.

I am thus enabled to ventilate the interior of my umbrella or parasol without impairing its usefulness, and to arrest vsuch ventilation at will. The supplemental cover K, besides its other advantages, imparts to my umbrella or parasol a unique appearance.

The cover of an ordinary umbrella has been provided with an opening near its outeredge or margin, provided with a folding cover or hood, the opening serving the purpose of a lookout for the person using the umbrella; but such, it will be evident, is not my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Vis- Ihe combination, with an umbrella-staff', of two sets of ribs, having different lengths, and two sets ot' stretchers, two runners, one to each set of stretchers, a primary cover, secured to the long ribs and having a central ventilating-opening, a supplemental cover, secured to the lshort ribs and arranged above said opening, and a suitable device or devices for confining the runners, all adapted to operate substantially as described.
