1 Claim.
This invention relates to ventilators of the type known as ridge ventilators, which are adapted to be used in connection with elongated openings in roofs and to extend therealong for a considerable distance. This application is in some respects a continuation in part of my application, Serial No. 727,306, filed May 24, 1934 now Patent No. 2,072,- 461, patented March 2, 1937.
The general object of the invention is to provide means for supporting the side members or side baffles of a ventilator of the character referred to in such manner as to anchor their bases securely while enabling them to be quickly and conveniently removed, as for purposes of renewal, repair, or painting.
I accomplish the foregoing object in and through the construction and arrangement of parts shown in the drawings, wherein Fig. 1 represents a transverse sectional view of a ventilator constructed in accordance with my invention, the said view corresponding substantially to the line ll of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 a central longitudinal sectional View through so much of a ventilator of the type referred to as will be necessary to an understanding of my invention; Fig. 3 a detail in section through the lower end of one of the side members or bafiles and the subjacent portions of I the flashing member and cross frame, the parts being separated; Fig. 4 a detail in elevation of the lower end of the side member or baflle shown in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 a detail in section corresponding to the line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
Describing the various parts by reference characters, it and H denote spaced portions of a roof between which an elongated ventilation opening A is formed. These roof portions are shown as provided each with an inclined surface lit i l respectively, said surfaces converging upwardly.
The ventilator shown herein comprises generally flashing plates each secured to the inclined surfaces [ii and Il side baffles extending upwardly from said flashing plates, a ridge cap interposed between the upper ends of the side bafiies, and a damper interposed between the upper ends of the side baffles and the opening formed between the upper ends of the flashing plates, together with transverse frames for supporting the ridge cap, the upper ends of the side bafiies, the lower ends of the side bafiles and the damper-raising and lowering mechanism.
l2 denotes the flashing plates, the same providing between their upper ends an outlet for the air circulating upwardly through the opening A. The upper ends of these members are folded upon themselves, as shown at l3, providing a double thickness of metal where the damper is supported when closed. It denotes a plurality of transverse straps extending between the upper ends of the flashing plates and having downwardly in 5 clined ends M by which they are secured to said plates. At similarly spaced intervals are transverse frames, each comprising opposed downwardly and outwardly inclined lower end portions l5 terminating in vertically extending stakes it. From the upper ends of the portions it extend the vertical side portions I'l. From the upper ends of the side portions ll extend the upwardly and inwardly inclined portions til, the upper ends of the portions !8 being connected by the transverse upper end portions IS. The lower end portions l5 are secured to the flashing members l2 and to the downwardly inclined ends Idof the transverse straps M by means of bolts 2i].
2! denotes a ridge cap having downwardly and outwardly inclined lower end portions 2W supported by the inclined portions I8 of the cross frames and projecting beyond and overhanging the sides of the opening provided between the upper ends of the flashing members.
22 denotes the side baflles the lower ends of which rest upon the flashing plates I2 and the upper ends of which are projected inwardly or toward each other and extend above the lower ends of the ridge cap, cooperating with the latter to prevent access of rain, sleet, etc. into the opening formed between the upper ends of the flashing members.
The lower end of each side bafiie is provided with drain openings 22*, said openings being provided immediately below loops which are formed by providing vertically spaced slots 23 above said drain openings and pressing inwardly the metal between said slots, as shown at 24. The loops and the drain openings of each side baffle will be so spaced as to correspond with the spacing of the cross frames.
The upper ends of the baffles are supported from the cross frame by means of straps 25, each having a downwardly and outwardly inclined lower end 25 which is secured to the adjacent inclined portion 18 of a cross frame by means of a bolt 26, which bolt also extends through the portion of the ridge cap supported by said cross frame. The upper end of each strap is detachably connected to the upper end of a side baffle by means of a screw bolt 21 extending through the upper end portion of the side bafile and through an upwardly and inwardly inclined end portion 25 of the strap. The upper end of each side 55 bafile is bent upon itself as shown at 22* and this end may engage the upper end of the portion of the strap 25 therebelow.
The upper transverse members [9 of the cross frames support the damper operating mechanism, the said mechanism being shown, described and claimed in my aforesaid application Serial No. 727,306. This mechanism, also shown in part herein, comprises generally. brackets 28 to which are pivotally secured links 29' in turn pivotally connected to angle members 30 carried by the damper 3|, the damper being in the shape of a flat inverted V having downward turned ends 3i extending beyond the tops of the flashing members. Connected to the links 29 or to a suitable number of them are levers 32, the upper ends of which are connected to a connecting link or links 33. One of the levers 32 carries a pulley 34 at its upper end. The damper 3| is provided with an opening 35 adjacent to which is a pulley 36 carried by suitable bracket members 31. Also connected to one of the levers 32 by means of a pivoted link 38 is a cable 39, which passes from its point of attachment to the link 38 around pulleys 40, 34 and 4| and thence over the pulley 36 and downwardly through the opening 35, toa place conveniently accessible for operation of the ventilator.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the damper is shown in closedposition. In order to raise the same, the operator merely pulls upon the cable 319, which results in swinging the damper longitudinally while moving it upwardly into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1.
By the manner of constructing the cross frames and the side baffles, the latter may be securely supported in place by the former, but
can be quickly and conveniently removed, should occasion require. It is only necessary to unscrew the bolts 21 which connect the upper ends of the side bailies to the straps 25, whereupon the baflies may be lifted from their seats upon the flashing members, for inspection, repair, or painting, after which they may be as conveniently replaced. Furthermore, the location of the drain openings allows them to be formed by the same operation whereby the loops for the stakes are formed. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: v
The combination in a ridge ventilator, of a pair of upwardly converging flashing plates extending along opposite sides of a roof opening and secured thereto, longitudinally spaced transverse frames having downwardly and outwardly divergent lower ends secured to the said plates and having their lowermost ends upturned to 7 provide stakes, each of said frames having op.
posed portions extending upwardly from the inclined portions and having portions extending upwardly and inwardly from the upper ends of the last mentioned portions, straps secured to the said upwardly and inwardly inclined portions of said transverse frames, side baiiies extending upwardly from the flashing plates and each of said b'afiles having above its lower edge a loop projecting inwardly therefrom and each having its upper end detachably secured to said straps, the loops being formed by pressing inwardly portions of the said baflies adjacent to the bottom edges thereof and the stakes entering said loops, the said baffles being provided with drain openings located below the said loops.
