1 Claim.

This invention, relates to improvements in garments and has for its objects, to provide a garment of a combination character; to provide a garment combining in unit parts which have heretofore been comprised in those portions of an outer shirt and slip-over when worn together; to provide a garment having the characteristic features of a slip-over and having in combination therewith the neck portion and sleeves representative of an outer shirt; to unite the sleeves and neck portion with the slip-over portion of the garment upon lines inset from the openings of the slip-over; to provide an edging around the openings of the slip-over which will overlie the 1 line of connection between the slip-over and the sleeve and neck portions; to enable various color combinations both as to the body of the slip-over and binding and as to the slip-over and sleeve and neck portions to be employed; to secure simplicity of construction and a strong and satisfactory garment; to utilize the shirt portion in maintaining the shape of the slip-over portion; to provide means for permitting a tie to be worn and depend between the shirt portion and slipover portion; and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.

Description In said drawing, the garment is shown as comprising essentially a slip-over portion, the body of which is designated by reference numeral to. This slip-over portion has sleeve and neck openings as usual, and therein are secured respective ly, sleeves Ii, ii and neck portion H, with attached collar i3, which together will be referred to as the shirt portion. This neck portion i2 will open at a front hem ll, the collar being provided with a button l5 for keeping the hem and collar closed while being worn. The garment preferably provides an edging i6 around the sleeve and collar openings which is associated with the body portion in in a manner to keep the stitching ll holding the parts together from exposure at the outside of the garment.

It will be observed that the. slip-over may be and preferably is of knitted material, and therefore will have all necessary stretch and elasticity for enabling the garment to be put on over the head. The shape of the garment is retained by employing a non-elastic shirt portion, that is to say, sleeve and neck portions of a textile fabric, 6 so that after the garment is worn a number of times it will still have the proper shape and lit upon the wearer. The garment likewise can be laundered as required and may accordingly always have the apearance of a slip-over being 10 worn upon an outer shirt, since the sleeve and neck portions simulate such a garment in shape, material and finish.

The attachment of the sleeve and neck portion is made by the stitching ll preferably at the very l edge of the body portion of the slip-over but inset from the apparent edge of the opening by virtue of the edging l6 being applied around the said openings to project beyond the edge of the body portion. The stitching around the sleeves 20 retains the sleeves to the body portion and also retains the edging around the opening of the body portion. Likewise the stitching retains theneck portion to the body portion and simultaneously retains the edging of the neck portion in 25 place. The free edge of the edging in each instance overlies the textile fabric of-the sleeve or neck portion, and thus not only avoids the appearance of the sleeves and neck portions being actually attached, but applies any strain to the 30 body portion inwardly from the apparent edge of the slip-over so that the appearance of the garment being two garments instead of one is maintained under all conditions of use.

It is a further feature of the invention to en- 5 able the user to wear a four-in-hand tie as if it were donned upon a shirt and a slip-over then put on so the lower part of the tie is hidden by the slip-over. In carrying out this feature, I preferably stitch the neck portion and its edging downwardly only as far as the front hem H of the neck portion l2, and thus leave an opening it which enables a tie to be inserted between the lower edge of the neck portion and the upper edge of the body portion and hang down within the said body portion. Preferably the lower end of the hem is stitched, as at l9 so as to prevent the same from separating while being worn or otherwise, but these stitches next the opening do not extend through the material of the body portion, as clearly shown in Figure 3.

I claim:

A garment comprising a body portion and a shirt portion, said body portion providing an unbroken front with a V-neck opening, said shirt.

portion providing a longitudinal central opening having a front hem and with the said hem closed at its lower end substantially below the lower end of the V-opening of the body portion, the side edges of the shirt portion next the closed end of the hem being secured to the body portion for taking the cross strain at the lower end of said V-opening from the material forming the said v-opening of the body portion, the side edges of the shirt material upwardly from said side edges next the bottom of the hem being likewise secured to the body portion next the upwardly diverging edges of the opening, said garment providing an opening between the body portion and shirt portion to provide means for introducing a tie between the body portion and shirt portion.
