UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
GEORGE M. YOUNG, OF EL PASO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAGGAGE-FASTENER AND SHAWL- CARRIER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2] 2,082, dated February 4, 1879; application filed October 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. YOUNG, of El Paso, in the county of Woodford and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable ImprovementinBaggage-Fastener and Shawl- Oarrier; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the lettters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The drawing is a representation of a shawl, showing my device applied.
My invention relates to a portable device adapted to serve as a shawl-carrier and a baggage'fastener; 'and the novelty consists, as a new article of manufacture, in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth.
In carrying out my invention I employ a chain carrying a loose link or ring thereon, upon one end a larger ring, and upon the other a padlock. These devices upon the ends of the chain are of such proportions as to preclude the possibility of the loose link becoming disengaged.
In employing my device as a shawl-carrier, a loop is made in one end of the chain to receive the shawl or other article by passing the chain at that end through the stationary ring.
The loose ring and lock form another loop, as shown, and the portion interveningbetween these formed loops serves as a convenient and eiflcient handle.
As a baggage-fastener, either end of the device may be passed through the handles of valises, baskets, or the like; then around a chair-round, rack-slat, or other device, and the lock engaged with either or both rings, and secured.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the chain, of any suitable length; B, the lock O, the stationary ring, and D the loose ring.
My device is easily carried, and may be used efficiently in various ways.
I am aware that a halter having a sliding ring and suap-hooks at each end is old also, that a chain and padlock have been applied to a satchel for securing it to prevent it from be ing carried away. I do not therefore seek to cover either of these devices in this application.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shawl-chain and baggage-fastener, as a new article of manufacture, composed of a chain having a fixed ring at each end, to one of which is permanently secured a padlock, and an intermediate slip-ring smaller than the end rings, operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE MELVILLE YOUNG.
Witnesses J. T. BALDWIN, W. I. BURNETT.
