Claims. (01. 223102) This invention relates to a needle and, more needle shown in Fig. 2 looking thereat from the particularly, to a needle which is provided with right side.
an improved threading attachment and with a Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section of the shank means for severing the thread or cord whenever and dog of the needle taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. 5 a sewing operation has been completed. Fig. 6 is an enlarged plan view of the needle 5 Among the objects of the invention are: to structure shown in Fig. 2. provide an improved dog for guarding the en- Referring in detail to the drawing, the needle trance to the eye of the needle; to provide the therein shown comprises a body portion 5 which needle adjacent to its eye with an improved is of a cylindrical character except that it is v 10 shoulder construction or guide means which will tapered at one end to a point in the usual man- 10 open a clear path through the garment for the r. Fig. 1. A lug 20 results between said shoulders,
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the portion of the ough Wh ch e pivot of the (10% t sneedle shown in Fig. 2 looking thereat from the The free end of the dog I5 is so positioned that, left side. when the dog is closed, said end thereof is directed Fig. 4 is an elevation of the portion of the away from the pointed end of the needle and 5 position. 7 As shown in Fig.5 one edge or 'side of the shank 6 'isbeveled at 2|, thus providing a comes substantially into contact with the adjacent end portionof the hook Land the outer side portionof the dog alines withthe outer side of said hook portion, thus providing a continu-: "ously smooth surface around all sides of the needle which will not interfere with the passage of the needle through the garment or other work beingsewed or spliced and willat the same time make a'free path for'the' thread or cord; This smooth'surface around the needle results from the fact that the cross-sectional shape of the dog includes a convexityjwhich corresponds in curvature to the circumferential curvature of the adjacent portion of the needle. This construction also causes the dog, when closed, to forma reinforcing abutment at the extremity of .the'hook 7 member If! enabling the needle safely to resist heavy pressure applied to it's eyeleted end.
Owing to the fact that, when'the dog is closed,
its, free end 'is directedaway from the pointed end of the needle, the'movements of the needle thru the work tend to keep the dog in the closed position. I
It will be observed that; at each side of its grooved portion, thedog l5 has a sharpedge as viewed in cross section. These sharp edge portions of the dog'p'ass close to each side of the needle shank 6 as the dog is swung to its closed knife-edge or angular shoulder 22 along one side of said'shank. The adjacent sharp-edged portion of the dog cooperateswith'this knife edge,-and thus forms a cutting means for'severing by a shearing action the thread or twine carriedby the needle, at the'close of a sewing operation.
The stop shoulder '23 prevents the knife edge of the shankli from being blunted by contacting with the base of the slot I6.
It should be understood thatthe present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and 7 that this invention includes all modifications and ,equivalents which fall within the scope of the entrance opening and'with a dog pivoted to swing subject matter claimed; 7
What is claimed is:--
1. A, needle of the kind described having through it an' eye which is-furnished with an to and from a position for closing said entrance opening, said needle having a shouldered portion adjacent tov said eye and said dog having a sharp edge portion positioned to cooperate with said shouldered portion of the needle to sever the V 7 thread after a sewing operation.
2."A needle of the kind described having through itan eye which is furnished with an entrance opening and with a dog pivoted to swing to and from a position for closing said entrance opening, said needle having a shank provided with aflattened portionadjacent to said eye and said dog having a' longitudinally grooved portionjfittable over said'fiattened portion, said' dog having alsoa sharp edge portion at at least shank to provide a thread cutting means.
3. A needle having a pointed work penetrating body portion whichis substantially circular in cross section, one endof said body portion being continued as a shank, neck and head all of which 1 a adjacent to the juncture of the shank and bodyof one side of its groove to cooperate with said the needle, said dog having av cross-sectional shape which includes a' convexity corresponding in curvature to'the adjacent portion'of the needle, and having alsov a longitudinal groove to fit over said shank ,when the dog is swung to its closed position wherein it closes the entrance to said eye and forms with said Vs hanka continuation of the cross-sectional shape of the body portion of the needle throughout thelextent of said dog whereby toprovide a passage-making means thru' the work in advance of the thread occupying said eye, the free end portion of said dog, when closed,-j
being directed away from the point of the needle,
4. A'needle having an eye provided with an inlet, and with a shank having an angular shoulder providing a knife edge adjacent to said inlet,
and a dog positioned to open and close said inlet, said dog having an edge positioned to move across the angle'of said shoulder with a shearing actionr 5. The subject matter of claim 4t and, said shank having a stop shoulder adjacent saidknife edge, limiting the closing movement of said dog;
