6 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in the art of tool and die making and provides a devicemore particularly adapted to certain tools for the purpose of scribingthe precise line of the die to be made from the punch indicating thereby the thickness of metal of the part to be stamped from sheet metal relative to forming dies.
The outstanding advantage of the invention is that due to the particular construction and arrangement of parts thereof an instant and accurate adjustment may be made relative to the proper thickness of metal required, thereby eliminating confusion and inaccuracy and effecting a decided economy in time and labor in this class of work.
With the foregoing in mind it will become readily apparent that the invention possesses further advantages, all of which will become readily apparent during the course of the following detailed description, illustrated throughout the accompanying drawing, and more fully pointed out in the appended claims.
The views in the drawing are drawn to the scale of approximately four times size, and referring directly to the several views thereof:
Figure 1 is a side elevation assembly.
Figure 2 is a front end assembly.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section taken directly upon line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a section upon line 44 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section of a portion of a punch, and the dotted line therein indicates the thickness of metal as would be scribed by the device.
Figure 6 is an elevational view of the segmental slot within the frame of the device.
Figure 7 is a section taken upon line 1-1 of Figure 1.
The device comprises U-frame member I which is of the formation as indicated more particularly shown in Figures 1 and 2.
A suitable tool holder is provided having body 2 with enlargement 3 thereupon which is laterally drilled therethrough so as to freely receive screw 4 and said screw being adapted to threadedly engage U-frame I as at 5. In this manner it is understood that the tool holder is accurately. pivoted to U-frame I at all times.
Referring more particularly to Figure 3 it is clearly observed that tool Ii is provided, having pointed end as indicated and being adapted to be freely inserted into a longitudinally extending counterbore within one end of body 2 of the holder, and being locked therein by screw I where shown, said screw is adapted to threadedly en- 1936, Sa No. 104,416 (01. 33 41) gage the holder for this purpose. This arrangement provides a suitable means whereby tool 6 may be quickly removed from its holder for resharpening or for replacing the device with a new tool at such time as may be required.
One of the outstanding advantages of this invention is the adjustable feature as applied to the tool holder thereof,'and again referring to Figure 3 it is clear that special screw 8 is provided and having enlarged portion 9 upon one end thereof with lateral aperture so as to receive the press fit therein of pin I0.
Referring further to Figure 2 adjusting nut has knurled head II with round body I2 and spherically disposed portion or ball I3 where indicated. This member has internally threaded passage therethrough for the accommodation of screw 8. Opposed apertures I4 are provided Within the side walls of U-frame I and said apertures are in axial alignment with respect to each other. As the device is assembled ball I3 of the adjusting member will be pressed into apertures I4 thereby forming a seat upon the inner surface of U-frame I.
Segmental passage I5 is provided in one side of U-frame I where indicated and screw I6 threadedly engages said frame as at I! and normally passes through said passage so that the space intermediate the point of tool 6 and plane IA of the aforesaid frame may be definitely locked by screw I6 in any predetermined adjusted position of the tool holder by the adjusting screw member of the device. This space is consistent with the thickness of metal of the sheet metal part to be made by a forming die.
With reference to Figure 5, A represents a portion of the punch, and with the point of tool 6 disposed downwardly the device is held at right angles to said punch and the point contacting the top surface of the die block and with plane IA of U-frame I contacting the punch dotted line B will indicate how the precise shape and formation of the forming die must be so as to allow for the thickness of metal required.
In conclusion it should be understood that the disclosure herewith is merely illustrative and the invention not being restricted to the specific details of construction in the event certain minor changes would be required during any probable further development of the invention for the market.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In a metal thickness scriber a U-frame, a tool holder pivotally mounted within said frame,

means for adjusting the space intermediate the point of a tool within said holder and the bottom plane of aforesaid member, and further means for locking said holder with respect to said plane in a predetermined adjusted position.
2. In a metal thickness scriber a U-frame, a tool holder, means for detachably engaging a tool with said holder and further means for locking said tool therewith, means for pivotally mounting said holder within the U-frame aforesaid.
3. In a metal thickness scriber a U-frame, a tool holder, said holder having an elongated body, a screw threadedly engaging one side of said frame, said body having an enlarged end and said screw passing through said enlargement and being the axis for the holder aforesaid.
4. In a metal thickness scriber a U-frame, a tool holder, said holder pivotally mounted within said frame and having an elongated body, said body having a recessed portion, an elongated screw with an enlarged end, a pin pressed through said enlargement and having its ends journaled within said body so as to effect a pivotal joint relative to they holder and screw, an internally threaded adjusting nut, said nut having an enlarged head and the opposite end thereof terminating in a ball, aforesaid U-frame having opposed apertures in axial alignment so that said ball may be pressed into said apertures forming thereby respective seats for the apertures aforesaid.
5. In a metal thickness scriber a U-frame, a tool holder pivotally mounted within said frame, means for detachably engaging a tool with said holder and locking the same therein, means for locking said holder with a tool therein in a predetermined position relative to the tool and the bottom plane of the aforesaid U-frame, comprising a screw threadedly engaging one side of said U-frame, and the opposite side of said frame having a segmental slot adapted to accommodate the screw aforesaid.
6. In a metal thickness scriber a U-frame, a tool holder pivotally mounted within said frame, means for detachably engaging a tool with said holder and further means for locking the tool therein, an adjusting screw, means for pivotally mounting the same within aforesaid U-frame and coacting means whereby the screw is pivoted to said holder for adjusting the'space intermediate the point of the tool and the bottom plane of the U-frame aforesaid.
