BUILDING STRUCTURE Filed June 1, 1955 AT TO RMEJiS Lit! Patented May 10, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BUILDING STRUCTURE Application June 1, 1935, Serial No. 24,522 4 Claims. (oi. ma -s) This invention relates to building structures, and more particularly to face-work building structures, and has for an object the provision of new and improved structures of this character.
In the drawing accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application, I have shown, for purposes of illustration, embodiments which my invention may assume, and in the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a building structure, embodying the invention, disclosing parts of the same in horizontal section, and disclosing parts broken away to more clearly illustrate the construction,
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal sectional View, corresponding substantially to the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2, corresponding substantially to the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal sectional view, corresponding substantially,
to the line 44 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective View, similar to Figure 1, and disclosing a different, embodiment of the invention, while Figure 6 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view, corresponding substantially to the line 6-45 of Figure 5.
As shown in Figures 1 through 4 of the drawing, the invention comprises a building structure, wherein a plurality of facing panels II) are disposed edge to edge and fiatwise along the surface of a supporting wall II, which may be the front wall of a building or the like, and the panels III are secured in position along said wall by a plurality of sets of securing means, each set being indicated generally by the reference character I2, and adapted to be positioned between juxtaposed edges of each pair of panels I0; the sets I2 are duplicates in construction and operation and only one of the same will be described in detail.
Each of the sets I2 comprises an elongated member I3, preferably of sheet metal, and channel-shaped in cross-section, having an interthe slots IB is an anchoring member I9, comprising a screw-bolt 20, extending through the slot I8, having a head 21 bearing against the outer face of the intermediate portion I4, and a shank threaded into a wedge part 22, and the wedge part 22 is encased in an expansible sleeve 23, which may be of lead. The wedge part 22 and sleeve 23 may be accommodated in a suitable cavity 24 formed in the supporting wall II, and rotation of the bolt serves to draw the wedge part 22 inwardly, and to expand the sleeve 23 into anchoring engagement with the wall of the cavity 24. When all of the anchoring members I9 have been tightened, the member I3 is fixedly secured to the supporting wall I I, and the slots I8 permit necessary movement incident to expansion and contraction under varying conditions.
Cooperating with each of the fixed members I3 is a plurality of connecting members 25, each pref erably in the form of an oblong piece of metal sufiiciently long to prevent turning when inserted within the channel-shaped formation of the member I3, said connecting members 25 being adapted to be inserted into the channel-shaped formation of the members I3 through transverse slots 26 formed in the flanges I6, then shifted out of line with the slots, 26, thereby to present engaging portions 21 adapted to abut the inner surfaces of the overhanging flanges I6. Threaded through each of the connecting members 25, is an actuating screw 28, which extends outwardly through the slot I1, and at its outer end is provided with a kerfed head 29, and carried by the shank of the actuating screw 28 is a clamping member 30, of greater size than the slot I1, and
which provided bearing portions 3| and 32 adapt- 3 ed to cooperate with the outer surfaces 33 of the flanges I6 to provide clamping means.
Each of the sets of securing means I2 is adapted to secure juxtaposed edges of a pair of the panels In to the supporting wall II, and the panels II] are formed for cooperation with the securing means I2, each of the panels In comprising a rectangular, channel-shaped formation having an intermediate portion 34, an angularly extending web along one edge of the portion 34, and an angularly extending web 36 along the opposite edge of the portion 34 and the web 35 has an out-turned marginal flange 3'1 adapted to be clamped between the clamping surfaces provided by the bearing portion 3| of the clamping member 30 and the surface 33 of the adjacent flange I6, while the web 36 has an out-turned marginal flange 38 adapted to be clamped between the bearing portion 32 and the outer surface 33 of the adjacent flange I6.
Installation of the face-work structure is preferably effected by first securing a plurality of the members I 3 vertically and in spaced relation along the supporting wall I I, through the medium of the anchoring members I9, the members [3 being spaced apart a distance corresponding to the width of the panels it is desired to use. The clamping means, each comprising the connecting member 25, actuating screw 28, and clamping member 30, are each assembled with respect to the members l3, this being effected by inserting the connecting member 25 through the slots 26. The marginal flanges 31 and 38 of adjacent panels are then inserted between the clamping members 30 and adjacent faces 33 of the flanges l6, and the actuating screws 28 tightened. After all of the clamping members 30 have been adjusted, the space between the webs 35 and 36 of the secured panels It] may be filled with a suitable filling material, indicated at 39, the heads of the actuating screws 28 and anchoring members l9 providing key means for the filling material, and in turn being held thereby against accidental loosening. Although the securing members I3 are shown and described as secured vertically along the supporting wall I I, it will be understood that these members may be disposed horizontally, and the panels l0 secured thereto, or, if desired, the securing members I3 may be arranged both vertically and horizontally to present rectangular formations to which all four edges of the panels l0 may be secured, the panels I0, in this latter case, of course, having all four edges formed as heretofore described to cooperate with the securing means.
Referring to Figures 5 and 6, a somewhat different embodiment of the invention is disclosed, comprising elongated securing members 40 similar to the members 13, each having a channelshaped body, with an intermediate portion 4|, and spaced overhanging flanges 42, the intermediate portion 4| being secured at intervals to the supporting wall 43 by anchoring members (not shown) identical to the anchoring members 99 heretofore described. A plurality of clamping means are provided for cooperation with the members 40, each of these clamping means comprising a connecting member 44, actuating screw 45, and aclamping member 46, these parts being identical in construction and operation to the parts 25, 28 and 30 heretofore described, except that the clamping member 36 is somewhat longer than the member 30, and the actuating screw 45 is also somewhat longer than the actuating screw 28. Panels 4'! of a type somewhat different from the panels ID are employed in this embodiment, each having an intermediate portion 48, angular webs 49 and 50, and each of the webs 49 and 50 having an inwardly turned flange 5! adapted to rest upon the outer surfaces of the flanges 42. The web portions 49 and 50 of adjacent panels 41 are slotted at intervals, as indicated at 52 for the reception of the ends of the clamping members 46, the slots 52 being sufficiently large to permit the clamping member 46 to be rotated about the axis of the actuating screw 45 and enter the slots, after which the actuating screws are screwed home, clamping the panels 41 in position.
After the panels 41 are in position, suitable filling material, indicated at 53, is employed to fill the cracks between the adjoining edges of the panels 41, and the heads of the actuating screws 45 serve as key means for said filling material,
and the filling material prevents accidental rotation of the actuating screws.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that I have accomplished at least the principal objects of my invention, and it also will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the embodiments herein described may be variously changed and modified, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and that the invention is capable of uses and has advantages not herein specifically described; hence it will be appreciated that the herein disclosed embodiments are illustrative only, and that my invention is not limited thereto.
