IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS AND SHOES.

Beitknown thatI,FREDERICKRICHARDSON, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

Figure 1 represents the heel portion of an interior lining for boots or shoes. Fig. 2 represents the interior lining of the soles of boots or shoes. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a rubber boot, parts of the upper being shown as cut away, so as to show the interior lining of the sole and the heel.

The object of this invention is to protect the interior of boots and shoes by lining the same with aha rdg m th and g g; and consists'in coating cloth, paper, or other suitable material with enamel, and securing this enameled material onthe interior of boots or shoes, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and pointedout intheclaiffi.

In the drawings, Arepresents a boot; I), the upper of the same; C, the enameled heel lining, made of cloth, paper, or. other suitable material, enameled with any suitable enamel by which a hard and smooth surface is produced,

and by which water or dampness is excluded. The lining may be enameled on one side or on both sides, and if on both sides one may be left rough or purposely made rough, so as to insure the firm cementing of the same to the inside of the boots or shoes. The lower edge of theliningCis provided with serrated edges, so that the lining will readily conform to the shape of the interior and the edge can be secured to the sole, as is shown in Fig. 3. Instead of confining the lining to the heel portion of the boot or shoe the same may extend over a greater portion of the inner part of the same, or over the whole inner part of boots or shoes.

0' represents the lining of the soles of boots or shoes, made of cloth, paper, or other suitable material, covered on one side with a hard smooth enamel and cemented into the boots or shoes, so as to cover the serrated edges of the side or heel lining or the sole lining may be covered on both sides with enamel, the same as the side lining. Both the side and sole linings may be used in boots or shoes, and thus a hard, smooth, and water-proof lining secured, in which there is little or no friction between the foot and the boot or shoe. The foot will enter the boot or shoe more readily, and, as the interior surface is smooth, will not be liable to injury by friction, while the socks or stockings will not wear as much as in other shoes not provided with so smooth an interior lining. The material of this lining,

while presenting a smooth and hard surface,

can be readily formed into any desired shape, and when secured in' place is pliable, and will yield to the foot.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An enameled heel-lining, C, secured to the inner surface of the heel portion of a boot or shoe, substantially as set forth.
