(Cl. a- -237) 5 V My' invention relates to trousers, particularly the construction of the portion fltting around the waist and is applicable to mens trousersor to the so-called slacks worn by women.

An object and. feature of my invention is the construction of the trousers at the portion to ex: tend around the waist in which'acentral, what might be termed panel, portion flts over the front of the abdomen and is separated from the side portions of the trousers by a slit. Each of'these side portions is provided with a flap which may be buttoned or otherwise secured over the cen tral panel portion. In addition the flaps may have a short section of a belt attached thereto, which belt sections are provided With a buckle or other fastenlng, the buckle being designed to clasp in the front portion of the 'trousers centrally of the panel portion. An advantage of this form of trouser construction is that the n trousers may readily be pulled inwardly, that is,

tightened or loosened at the waist. The construction also ia'cilitates finishing or changing the stitching where the flap portions are attached to the. front panel of the trousers, to give the trous- 25 ers the desired nt on the wearer. Another detail feature of my invention is that the flaps are provided with buttons which are fastened through buttonholes at each upper comer of the central panel, these buttons therefore fastened inwardly 30 and being covered or obscured when the trousers are adjusted for wearing. If desired when using these buttons the belt or partial belt may be Omitted,

Another feature of my invention relates to the appearance of the trousers, as these are generally pressed with a crease on the front and back, the edge line of the flaps forms a continual tion of the line of the crease, thereby giving the efiect of the creasing at the front extendingfrom 4o, the bottom to the top edge of the waist belt portion of the trousers. In addition, the edges of the flaps thus give a guide line when pressing the trousers to have the crease line up vertically with the edges of the flaps. The flaps are folded to- 45 ward the fly portion of the trousers so that the crease edge lies closely adjacent the central panel. By means of these flaps the circumferential waist line of the trusers may be adjusted while the central panel remains stationary, the flaps hiding 50 the slits at all times and preserving the center The side portions i of the trousers are provided with flaps which merge with the front panel portion below the bottom of the slit Il.

My Invention is Illustrated in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the trousers with the flaps and belt buckle secured in the position for wearing.

Figure 2 is a; similar elevation with the buckle unfastened and the flaps olded sidewise from the central panel.

' Figure 3 is a partial front elevation showing the upper portion of the central panel to illus- -trate the construction of the fly front of the trousers.

Figure i is a detail elevation with a side flap folded outwardly.

In the trousers, the waist band portionis indicated by the numer'al ll, having an upper edge i2.- These trousers may be considered as having a front panel II with a. slitl4 separating the front panel from the side portions i5, terminating at IB. The side slits M are preferablyparallel from which a slight fold I1 extends downwardly; this forming a fold line for the side flaps described hereunder.

Each of thesepanels is provided with a button 2i onthe inside which secures in a button hole 22 in the central panel adjacent the upper portion thereof. In addition I employ a partial belt construction 25 Whichhas one beltsection 28 "with a buckle 21 thereon and another belt section 20 with perforations 29 to engage the tongue of the buckle. Each of these belt sections is attached to the inside of one of the flaps by stitching indicated at 3ll. The front panel also has loops 3| through which the belt sections may be fitted.

If desired, the panel portion of the trousers may have a central slit with an overlap in which the lower portion forms an ordinary fly whereby the buttons l are secured to a Iining on the inside which button through button holes ll on the opposite side of the fly front, therefore these upper buttons when fastened are inside of the trousers and hence Obscured.

If desired the trousers may have vertical pleats ll positioned on the side portions spaced from the flaps and the trousers are illustrated as having side pockets 62.

In putting on trousers and adjusting them when made in accordance with my invention, lt is to be understood that if desired these could be made without the fly front in the panel or if this is used, this would be buttoned prior to pulling the panel portion upwardly over the lower portion of the abdomen. The flaps are then folded over the central panel portion and the buttons 2| fastened in the button holes 22 where these are provided. It will be understood that where a partial belt is used that it is not necessary to have these buttons and button holes. The por-' tions of the belt buckles are then fltted in the loops 3| and the buckle may be fastened so that it is centrally located as to the panel, that is, the front of the trousers adjacent the waist band portion. With my invention the edge por tion 43 of each flap aligns with the crease in the front of the trousers. therefore when the trousers are wom they have the appearance of the crease continuing from the bottom 45 of the trousers to the waist band and to the upper edge i2. Moreover when the trousers are being pressed this edge of each of thefiaps forms a guiding line for pressing the crease into the lower portion of the trousers.

It will be seen by my invention that as these marginal flaps may be drawn in, that is, towards each other, or allowed to slightly spread apart. that a wearer may readily .comfortably adjust the trousers. It will also be apparent that if the stitches joining the panel portion at its margina] edges to the main portion of the trousers, does not give a correct fit, that such stitching may be readily changed without marring the appearance of the trousers atthe front.

On account of the side flaps 20 overlapping each side of the central panel and as the slight fold i1 partly merges with the crease N, the upper part of the fiap gives the effect of a pleat somewhat similar to the pleat ll. In the fly front construction of Figure 3 the curved seam line 40 strengthens the trousers and the upper button 41 of the fly is above this seam 4G.

My improved construction of the trousers is es pecially useful for sport trousers which are often worn without coats. It will be noted that the effective waist line which is adjusted by the flaps 2|! in relation to the central panel l3 does not form any wrin.kles at. any point of the waist line. The flaps 20 ride smoothly past slits H along the adiacent portion of the central panel, the slits M being completely covered at all times as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Y The only effect such an adjustme'nt will have upon the trousers will be a slight increase or decrease of the fold IT of the trousers.

which ordinarily will not be noticed. By providing the slits Il in the waist line such smooth adjustment is efl'ected and the undesirable bulging out of the material which would result if no such slits were provided, is avoided.

A feature of the fly front construction shown in 1"ig. 3 is that the seam terminates below the upper button l'l and the button holes n. Therefore the trousers may be enlarged at the waist portion by setting over the buttons I and 3! without having any seam showing at this portion Therefore this adds to the neatness of the appearance when it is necessary to increase the waist band measurement of the trousers. Another feature of my invention in regard to the slit Il leaving a distinct center front panel II is that the flaps 2| on the outside of the slits may be completely across such'slits as shown in Flg. l. This construction allows a further adjusting of the waist band either by loosening or tightening by resetting the button Hence if desired the trousers may;be wom without the belt construction 25 having the belt portions n. of course when the trousers are made without the belt the loops II are omitted. Hence with this form of trousers all of the adiustment for fltting of the waist band may be made at the front of the trousers by an increase or decrease of the verlap of the flaps relative to the vertical slits Various changes may be made in the details of the construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

I claim:

1. 'I rousers having a frontal fly portion and provided with downwardly extending slits equally spaced from the fly portion and forming a centra] panel therebetween, the side portion of the trousers adjacent the slits each having a folded flap coveririg the slit and extending partly over the adjacent portion of the central panel, the flap having the folded portion adjacent the slit turned inwardly toward the waist line, the edge of the folded flap being creased and in vertical alignment with the frontal crease of the trousers.

2. Trousers having a frontal fly portion and provided with downwardly extending slits equally spaced from the fly portion and forming a central panel therebetween, the side portion of the trousers adjacent the slits each having a folded flap coveri ng the slit and extending partly over the adjacent portion of the central panel, the flap having the folded portion adjacent the slit turned inwardly toward the waist line, the edge of the folded flap being creased and in vertical alignment with the frontal crease of the trousers, and means attached on the flap for longitudinal adjustment in relation to the central panel for changing the length of the effective waist lineof the trousers as desired.
