This invention relates to hair brushes and an object of the present invention is to provide a hair brush which when used will cause the hair to lay flat without the use of oils, etc.; will have a better and more thorough brushing action than the flat type of brushes now used, and will be found especially capable for removing dandrufi, .massaging the scalp and in shampooing the hair.
The invention'together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is an end elevational view of the hair brush.
Figure 2 is a view partly in section and partly .in elevation clearly showing the handle assem- 'bly.
Figure 3 is a plan View showing the extension handle in extended position.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through the brush head with the bristles removed.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view through the brush head.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the extension or auxiliary handle.
Figure '7 is a plan view of the spindle forming part of the extension or auxiliary handle and- Figure 8 is a perspective view of a latch plate.
Referring more in detail to the drawings it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof my improved brush comprises a handle 5 having integral with one end thereof an enlarged head 6. In the form illustrated the head 6 is provided with longitudinal grooves 1 arranged in circumferentially spaced relation about the periphery of the head, the grooves receiving the bristles 8 which are secured in the grooves positively in any suitable manner.
Head '3 is provided with an axial opening or socket 9 which accommodates an extension handle assembly indicated by the reference numeral Hi.
Extension handle assembly l0 comprises a cylindrical handle member I I confined on a spindle l2 to rotate relative to the spindle. The cylindrical handle l l is loosely retained on the spindle l2 between a shoulder l3 formed. at the inner end of the spindle and a disc l4 secured to one end of the spindle through the medium of a screw or other fastening element l5. At one end thereof the handle tube l l is provided with an internal groove IE to accommodate the disc M as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 6.
At the enlarged end thereof spindle I2 is provided with keys ll that are engaged in grooves or Ways [8 provided in diametrically opposite sides of the wall of the socket 9.
Fitted within the open end of the socket 9 is a stop ring l9 against which the keys I! abut to limit the outward movement of the spindle l2.
Pivoted within a suitable recess provided in the free end face of the brush head 6 is a keeper plate which is adapted to be swung to the dotted line position shown in Figure 1 to bear against disc l4 when the handle assembly In is in its retracted position within the socket 9 to retain said handle assembly within the socket.
It will thus be seen that in use latch plate 20 is swung to the full line position shown in Figure l and the handle assembly l0 extended to the dotted line position shown in Figure 2 and also the full line position shown in Figure 3. With the handle assembly [0 thus extended it will be seen that said handle 10 and handle 5 are loosely held in the hands of the user so that the brush may be readily manipulated for rolling the bristleequipped head of the brush over the head or hair of the user. The rolling action of the brush is found very desirable in thoroughly massaging the scalp, in the bringing of a lustre to the hair; and has many other advantages over the flat type of brush.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of an invention of this character will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:-
1. A rotary brush comp-rising a handle provided at one end with an integral cylindrical brush head equipped with bristles, said head heing also provided at its other end with an axial socket, and a handle assembly slidably arranged within said socket and including a spindle and a tubular handle member rotatable on said spindle, together witth inter-engaging means on one end of said spindle and on the wall of said socket'to retain said spindle and brush head against relative rotative movement and to limit outward movement of the handle assembly relative to the socket.
2. A brush having a cylindrical head provided with an axial socket, said socket being provided at opposite sides thereof with internal grooves, a spindle slidably fitting in said socket and provided with keys engaging in said grooves, and a tubular member rotatably confined on said spindle, as and for the purpose specified.
3. A rotary brush comprising a cylindrical bristle equipped head, a fixed handle integral with of the brush head opposite to said fixed handle, one end of the head and extending axially theretogether with means for limiting the outward from, said head being provided within axial movement of the last named handle relative to socket, and a handle normally arranged in said said socket.
socket and adapted to be extended to an axial MAXUM E. YAKIMCHICK. position outwardly of the socket and at the end
