The present invention relates to machine tools and particularly to drilling, boring, milling and like machine tools of the type having a slide or carriage movable along a horizontal guideway 5 and carrying a vertically movable part, such as for example a rotatable tcol spindle. Such arrangements may be used on radial drilling Inachines, on vertical milling machines or on jigbo-ring machines of the portable type.
When the vertically movable parts on such machines have large dimensions, they are usually counterbalanced by a weight suspended on a chain and disposed behind the horizontal cross beam along which moves the slide. In this case the horizontal guideway has to bear the weight of the vertically movable spindle, of the slide, and of the counterweight. This considerable weight acting on the horizontal guideway is prejudicial for the easy movability of the slide 20 and causes increased wear of the guideway.
The object of the invention is to utilize the weight of the counterweight to partially relieve the horizontal guideway from the weight oi the movable parts.
According to the invention the counterweight is carried by a lever pivotally connected to the horizontally movable slide or carriage and bearing on one or several rollers capable of rolling on a way provided along the beam carrying the horizontal slide, the reaction of the counterweight on the pivot of the lever acting to relieve the horizontal guideway from a partY at least of the Weight of the horizontally movable slide.
The accompanying drawings illustrate by way of example a form of construction of the invention and a modioation thereof.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical section of a boring machine embodying the subject of the invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Figures 3 and Llare similar vertical and horizontal sections, respectively, of a modification of the invention.
The represented machine comprises a boring spindle I mounted in a quill 2, the weight of these two parts being sustained by a counterweight 3 attached to the quill 2 by means of a chain i. This chain passes over two pulleys 'I and 8, the iirst one being journalled concentrically to the articulation I of a lever 9, and the second being carried by the free end of the lever 9; The pulley 'I could however be disposed otherwise. The articulation I0 of the lever is carriedby the horizontally movable spindle head I6.
The lever 9 carries a roller I I which rolls on a raceway I2 provided along a crossbeam I3 on which is formed the horizontal guideway I4 carrying the slide I5 and the spindle head I6.
When the ratio of the distances between the 5 axis I0 and the roller II, and between this roller and the pulley 8 is suitably selected, a force F will be developed at the point I0 which will balance the weight of the slide I5 with its spindle head I6. Y
Instead of mounting the roller II on the lever V9, this lever could bear on an intermediate member which would carry one or several rollers moving on the way I2.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the lever 9 is supl5 ported in a carriage having a cradle-shaped Y member Il and two downwardly extending flaps I3 which carry two rollers I9 movable along the raceway I2 of the cross beam I3.
I claim:-

In a machine tool the combination with a crossbeam having a horizontal guideway and a slide movable therealong, oi a vertically movable member carried by said slide, a counterweight adapted to balance the weight of said vertically movable member, a suspension member connecting the counterweight to said verticallymovable member, a lever having one end hingedly connected to said horizontally movable slide, the other end of the lever supporting the suspension member of said counterweight, and a roller supporting said lever at a point intermediate the ends thereof, said crossbeam being provided with a surface forming a raceway for said roller, whereby the reactionof the counterweight on the hinge connection of the lever will relieve the horizontal guideway from a part at least of the weight of said horizontally movable slide.
