Description

v H. MELVIN. Rod-Adjuster for Oil-Wells. No. 210, 18.
Patented Dec. 10,1878.
TINITED STATES PA'IENT OFFICE.
PATRICK H. MELVIN, OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROD-ADJUSTERS FOR OIL-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,6] 8, dated December 10, 1878; application filed February 9, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PATRICK H. MELVIN, of Franklimin the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod-Adjusters for Oil-Wells and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in an improved device for holding the polish-rod of an oil-well pump.
Figure 1 is a front View. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of said Fig. 1.
A represents the end of the walking-beam, in which there is a suitable slot for the passage of the polish-rod E. The trunnions D of my adjuster are fastened to said walking-beam by the slotted plank B B, or in any other suitable manner.
The adjuster consists of a head, D, with trunnions D D. Through said head D a hole is pierced for the polish-rod E. At the lower side of the head this hole is made larger and tapering, so as to receive the wedge F. Said wedge is made concave on one side, so as to fit tightly to the polish-rod. It terminates in a threaded end,]", which passes through a hole in the.head D parallel with the hole for the polish-rod E. 011 said threaded end fis screwed the nut g. By tightening said nut g the wedge F is drawn up into its seat, and thus the polishrod E is firmly held.
What I claim as new is 1. In an adjuster for oil-well rods, the bolt and wedge F, located parallel with the polishrod, in combination with a trunnioned head, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an adjuster for oil-wells, the combination of a vertical wedge, made to fit along and partly around the polish-rod, with a trunnioned head. provided with a suitable slot for the reception of said rod and said wedge, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the trunnioned head D D, the rod E, wedge-bolt Ff, and nut g, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
PATRICK H. MELVIN.
