This invention relates to a gas range having a flat cooking top having therebelow one or more cooking compartments, the top of the range preferably having a plurality of top burners arranged in groups, each group having a lid or cover thereon adapted to be opened to render the burners accessible.

In ranges of this character it is desirable to have a flue leading from the cooking compartment or compartments to take off the fumes and products of combustion. Such a flue usually extends a substantial distance across the back of the range. The lids or covers normally are disposed over the cooking top burners and it is desired to provide means for receiving and guiding such lids when they are opened so that they may be disposed out of the way. In view of the fact that it is necessary to have a flue outlet from the cooking compartments, the provision of means for receiving the cooking top covers presents a problem and it is toward this feature that this invention is particularly directed.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide' a gas range having a hat cooking top and one or more cooking compartments disposed therebelow and a plurality of top burners arranged in groups on the cooking top, together with lids or covers which normally cover the top burners and means for receiving and guiding such lids when they are opened.

Another object of the invention is to provide a range having a flat cooking top which has a plurality of spaced openings therein in each of which is arranged one or more top burners, such 33 cooking top having lids which cover the top burners and having also a rearwardly extending portion having slots therein which serve to receive and guide the lids respectively when they are moved to a position to render the top burners accessible.

Another object of the invention is to provide a range of the character described which possesses the features and advantages hereinbefore referred to and which is well adapted for pro-' duction at a'minimum cost.

Referring now to Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive in which are illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, the reference character l designates 30 a gas range which includes a flat cooking top 2 beneath which are disposed a pair of cooking and baking compartments 3 and 4 which are separated by a partition 5. The cooking top 2 is provided with a plurality of openings 6, l, and 35 t 8 over which are disposed grids 9, I0, and II, respectively. Arranged beneath each of the grids are a plurality of cooking top burners. The reference characters l2, l3, i4, i5, I5,'and l1 designate the gas supply cocks which serve to control 40 the supply of gas to the cooking top burners. It will appear from Fig. 1 that the cooking top has arranged thereon three groups of cooking top burners and disposed over the burners are covers or lids l8, l9, and 20, respectively. The refer- 45.

ence characters 2| and 22 designate the handles for the oven doors which serve to close the compartments 3 and 4. Disposed at the rear of the range and secured thereto in any suitable manner is an extension plate 23 which is preferably 50 formed in one piece and which has a flat portion disposed in substantially the same plane as the cooking top and an upwardly extending portion 26 which forms the back wall of the range. The central portion of the back wall 24 is shaped as 26 which is substantially rectangular in section. The flue is provided on its rear side with an enlarged portion 29 in which is provided an opening 30 to which may be connected a flue pipe leading to a chimney. Disposed within the flue and dividing it into two compartments'is a baiiie 3i whichserves to prevent products of combustion from one compartment escaping into the other compartment. The plate 23 at the central portion thereof is cut away as shown at 32 to provide a slot or opening to receive the cover or lid IS. The. plate 23 is also provided with cutout portions 33 and 36 which serve to provide openings which receive the lids I0 and 20. Secured to the back wall of the range and extending vertically thereof are a pair of guides 35 and 36 in which is slidably mounted a slide 31. The cover I9 is secured to the slide 31 by means of a pair of hinges 38 and 39. A stop 40 is provided for limiting the downward movement of the slide 31. The cover I9 when in the open position is shown most clearly in Fig. 4.

Also mounted on the rear wall at the rear 01' the range and extending transversely thereof are a pair of guides M and 42 in which'is slidably mounted a guide plate 43 which is connected with the cover plate I8 by means'oi hinges l4 and. When the cover plate I8 is opened, it is moved to the position shown in Fig. 4. The bottom ends of the guides 4| and 52 are supported by means of a pair-of plates 46 which are secured to the back of the range; as shown most clearly in Fig. 4. The reference character 41 designates a stop for limiting the downward movement of the guide 43. Disposed at the opposite side of the range and at the rear thereof and extending vertically are a pair of guides 40 and 49 which receive therein aslide 50 which is connected with the cover 20 by means of a pair of hinges 5| and 52.

It will now be seen that the range has a flat cooking top beneath which are disposed a pair of cookingcom'partments and that there are a plurality 01' top burners arranged in groups in openings provided in the cooking top, and a flue disposed at the back of the range and connected with the pair of cooking compartments. The top burners are covered by lids orcovers which are adapted to bemoved to a position to render the same accessible. The two lids which are disposed at the opposite sides of the range when opened are moved to a position rearwardly of the flue while the lid which covers the central group of burners when opened is moved to a position forwardly of the flue.

The reference character 53 designates a flue pipe which leads upwardly through an opening 54 provided in the central back-turned portion of the back plate.

In Figs. 10, 11, and 12 there is disclosed another form of my invention showing a range having a flat top and an oven disposed at one side and two groups of cooking top burners disposed at the other side together with a pair of lids one of which covers the cooking top burners and the other of which extendsover the top of the oven compartment. This form of the invention embodies a cooking top 85 having a pair of openings.

Disposed at the back of the range is a flue 99 which is shaped as shown most clearly in Fig. 11 and is connected with the oven compartment by means of a connection I00 shown in Fig. 12. The flue is provided with a flue outlet or opening IOI adapted to be connected with a flue pipe not shown. The extension plate BI is provided at the rear thereof with 'an elongated slot or opening I02. Secured to the back wall of the range are a pair of guides I03 and I04 which slidably receive therein a guide plate I05. Extending over the right hand side of the range is a cover plate or lid I05 which is substantially co-extensive with the oven top and which is connected. with the guide plate I05 by .means of a pair of hinges I01 and I08. Illhe lid or cover plate I06 is of the same size and shape as the lid 90 and is substantially coextensive with the top of the oven and serves to cover that portion of the range when the range is not in use. The reference characters I09, III), III, II2 designate the gas control cocks which control the supply of gas to the cooking top burners. The reference character II3 designates the handle to the oven door.

It will now be seen that in this form of range, there is provided a pair of lids one of -which covers the cooking top burners and the other of which covers the top of the oven compartment and that when either of these lids is opened, it may be slid downwardly through the slots provided at the rear of the range, one of the covers being disposed behind the flue and the other disposed in front of the flue;

In Figs. 13 to 16 inclusive there is disclosed another form of my invention which embodies a range having a flat cooking top and two ovens disposed therebelow. This range has no cooking top burners but the tops of the ovens are covered by lids I I4 and I I5 which are rectangular in shape and cover substantially the entire top of the range. The covers or lids II 4 and H5 cover substantially the entire top of the range to protect the range when it is not in use so that the top of the range may be used as a table without becoming scarred or marred. Secured tothe back of the range in any suitable manner is an extension plate II6 having a vertically extending back portion II'I. Also secured to the back of the range is a flue I I8 which is connected with both of the ovens and which also is provided with a flue outlet II9.

Disposed within the flue is a baiiie plate I20 which serves to prevent the products of combustion from one oven escaping into the other. The extension plate is provided at one side with an elongated cut-out portion I2I and secured to the back wall of the range are a pair of guides I22 and I23 which slidably receive therein a guide plate I24 which is connected with the cover plate IN by means of a pair of hinges I25 and I26. The extension plate II 6 is provided at the opposite side thereof with a cut-out portion or slot I21 and secured to the back of the range and extending vertically thereof are a pair of guides I 28 and I29 which slidably receive therein a guide plate I30 which is connected with the cover II5 by means of a pair of hinges I3I and I32. The guides I28 and I29 are secured to the back wall of the range in any suitable manner, such as plates similar to the plates 36 shown in Fig. 4.

It will thus be seen that the range is provided with a pair of cover plates or lids which when opened are received within'the slots provided in the extension plate, one of the cover plates being disposed rearwardly of the flue and the other forwardly of the flue.

It will now be clear that I have provided a gas range which will accomplish the objects of the invention as hereinbefore stated. The embodiments of the invention herein illustrated are to be considered as merely illustrative and not in a limiting sense as various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. For example, suitable springs may be provided for facilitating the opening and closing of the lids. If desired, flue outlets may be provided at the rear of the range instead of through the top of the extension plate. Various other changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and it is to be understood that the invention is limited only in accordance with the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: 1. A range having a flat cooking top and one or more cooking compartments disposed thereblow. a plurality of top burners arranged within openings provided in said cooking top, a flue arranged at the back of said range and connected with said cooking compartment or compartments, a plurality of lids adapted to be moved from a position to cover said top burners to a position to render said burners accessible respectively, means disposed rearwardly of said flue for receiving one of said lids when in the open position, and means disposed forwardly of said flue for receiving another of said lids when in the open position.

2. A range having a flat cooking top in which are arranged a plurality of top burners which are disposed in spaced groups, a pair of lids normally covering said groups of burners but movable to a position to render such burners access1b1e,one or more ovens arranged below said cooking top, a flue disposed at the rear of said range and extending across a substantial portion of the back wall thereof, guiding and receiving means disposed rearwardly of said flue for receiving one of said lids and guiding and receiving means disposed forwardly of said flue for receiving the other lid.

3. A range having a cooking top having three I spaced openings therein in each of which is arranged one or more top burners, said burners being disposed along each side of said top and also at the rear portion thereof, an oven disposed below said cooking top, a flue extending across the back of said range and connected with said oven, a lid for each of said burner openings movable to a position rearwardly of said range, means disposed at one side of said flue for receiving one of said lids and means disposed at the opposite side of said flue for receiving the other two lids when such lids are moved to a position to render such burners accessible.

4. A gas range having a flat top and one or more cooking compartments disposed therebelow, a flue arranged at the back of said range and connected'with said cooking compartment or compartments, a plurality of lids normally extending 0 over said cooking top but movable to a position rearwardly of the range top, means disposed rearwardly of said flue for guiding and receiving one of said lids when it is opened and means disposed forwardly of said flue for guiding and receiving another of said lids when it is opened.

5. A gas range having a flat top and one or more cooking compartments disposed therebelow, a fine arranged at the rear of said range and connected with said cooking compartment or compartments, a pair of independently movable lids which extend over the top of said range, an extension plate disposed at the rear of said range and constituting a continuation of said top and having a pair of slots therein providing a pair of openings which are disposed parallel with and in substantially the same horizontal plane as said top, one of said slots being disposed forwardly of said fiue and the other slot being disposed rearwardly of said flue, and means for guiding said lids respectively into said slots when the lids are opened.

6.
