written matter in typewriters, or the like, but
more particularly it has reference to improvemerits in an apparatus which provides multiple duplicate copies of typewritten matter substantially as clear, and of the same quality, as that of the typewriting as appears on the first or original copy produced by the type from the 10 usual typewriter ribbon on, substantially, any

An important object "of the invention contemplates the provision of a parallel series of movable inked typewriter ribbons interposed in parallel relation with and between the usual ribbon and platen of a typewriter to eliminate the use of sheets of carbon paper and, fonmaking a number of duplicate copies substantially similar to the first copy as produced by the type from the first or usual typewriter ribbon.
A further and important object of the inven tion contemplates the provision of hinged ribbon guide arms which are adapted to receive and guide the ribbon directly from and to the ribbon spools in a straight line.

Another important object of the invention contemplates the provision of an arrangement of a series of parallel interposed automatically movable type-writer ribbons arranged to travel in unison with each other in either direction across the longitudinal face of the type-writer platen to provide a series of parallel ribbons throughout the entire length of the platen.
It is a further and important object of this invention to provide a simple, but effective, typewriter ribbon takeup spool operating mechanism for operating the ribbon, or a series of ribbons, in either direction across the longitudinal face of the platen, and for automatically maintaining the ribbon or ribbons, in taut parallel relation to the face of the platen throughout its entire length during the period of operating the typewriter. The ribbon operating mechanism contemplates the provision of a series of ratchet driving clutches which may be arranged to operate the ribbon or ribbons, in reverse directions across the longitudinal face of the platen. The operating mechanism also contemplates the provision of means by which the driving clutches may be arranged in a neutral or inoperative position.
It is further contemplated to provide in this 30.
invention means for engaging the ribbon operating mechanism to prevent thesame from paying off ribbon while backing up the 'work on the platen, and, to prevent the ribbon, or ribbons, from being drawn with and between the work while the same is being reversed on the backing up of the platen.
A further and important object of this invention is to provide parallel inclined hinged ribbon guide arms so arranged and constructed 40 as to carry the ribbon in as direct a path as pos sible to or from the ribbon takeup spools to its above'stated position before the platen. The construction in said arms being such as to permit the arms to clear the hubs and the heads of set screws that may be in the hubs, of the platen on any make typewriter in order that the ribbon, or ribbons, may be guided from the takeup spools to the above stated position before the platen in, as before stated, as direct a. path as possible. There being further provided on the arms, at their outward extremities, means to guide the inclined portion of the ribbon around a lateral or outstanding angular corner to a vertical horizontal position and parallel with the longitudinal face of the platen as before stated, and without the ribbon becoming in the least distorted or creased, and with the least possible friction.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a detachable inclined longitudinal movable carriage for carrying the ribbon takeup and operating mechanism and the ribbon guide arms and other 'mechanism above mentioned.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a detachable inclinable frame for supporting said movable carriage and the ribbon mechanism in an angular position normally above and back of the platen of a typewriter.-
It is further provided that the carriage be oper-' ated in unison with and by means of the platen carriage of a typewriter, or such similar types of machines, during the period of operating the typewriter.
The invention further contemplates the moving of a series of ribbons arranged as above stated independently of each other to an inoperative position. v
The invention further contemplates the moving of the inclined ribbon carriage and its inclinable carrying frame to a position whereby the same, together with the typewriter, may be moved in the usual manner to an out-of-theway place within a standard typewriter drop desk.
This invention further contemplates the provision of a detached frame or mounting for supporting the above mentioned mechanism in operative relation to the typewriter free and independently of the typewriter.
These and other objects of the invention will be better understood from the several illustrations in the accompanying drawings, and more fully described in the following specification, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

the drawings mechanism which successfully operates one or more typewriter ribbons R, back and forth across the longitudinal face of a typewriter platen P, whereby a plurality of copies of typewritten matter may be made in addition to and at the same time the original copy is being made from the ribbon already installed in a typewriter T, a portion of which is shown in the several views, Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Essentially the invention or apparatus consists of one or more pairs of inclined parallel ribbon guide arms l0 hingedly mounted to hinges H. The hinges being mounted on an inclined mounting plate or carriage i2, and there fastened in any suitable manner, either by screws,
spot-welding, or soldering. Also fastened to plate l2, as by screws, spot-welding, soldering, or by rivets ii, are two opposite arms M, which are adapted to frictionally engage the inside of the frame of a typewriter carriage l5, as at l6, whereby, any movement of carriage l5, during the operation of the typewriter, operates to move carriage I 2, therewith, and in the manner of its movement in the operation of typewriting.
Carriage I2 is provided with roller bearings i1, whereby easy movement of the carriage is provided along carriage ways or guide-rods 18. The guide-rods being removably secured through rod supports iii, are arranged to support carriage l2, in an inclined plane parallel with the longitudinal axis of platen P. Roller bearings II are supported in brackets 20, which are removably secured to plate l2, by means of screws 2|. Limit stops 22 are secured to plate l2, by means of screws 23, and dowel 24, adjacent the outside of bearings brackets 20. The stops being provided with an opening 25, which freely fits rod I8, provide means by which the carriage i2,
is kept in place when the same is tilted back to the position shown in Figure 4. Stops 22, not only limit the travel of carriage l2, but provide guards for the roller bearings and means to prevent carriage l2, from being accidentally detached from the carriage ways l8.
Supports l9 are fastened, either by spot-welding, or by soldering, or by any other suitable means, to the sides 26, of a hingedly mounted frame 21, which is adapted to support carriage l2, in any desired angular position, as for instance, that shown in Figures 2 and 5, or that shown in Figure 4, o'r, in any other angular position intermediate thereof. Frame 21, comprise side members 26, and cross members 29. the same being fastened together as by spotwelding, soldering, or in any other suitable manner. Frame 21 is hingedly supported, as at 30, in the side frames 3|, of either a portable support 32, as is indicated in Figure 4, or a detachably secured support 33, as is indicated in Figure 5, accordingly as desired. As will be seen in Figures 1, 2, and 5, side frames 28, of frame 21, are adapted to be supported, as at 34, by the top of the typewriter frame I, and there secured in place by means of thumb screw 35, which, when the portable apparatus is being used maintains the same in proper operative relationship to the typewriter.
In the upper end of side frames 31 is provided a curved or arcuate slot 36, which is concentric with the axis of the hinge joint at 30, through 7 which is inserted a hand clamping screw 31, which extends into a tapped .hole formed in side frames 28, as at 38. With this arrangement ribbon guide arms Ml, may be adjusted so as to bring what ever color desired, of a muliple colored ribbon, onthe printing line before the typewriter platen, and, the apparatusthus arranged, clamped in place by means of said screw 31. Also, in this construction, when it is desired to operate the typewriter without the use of ribbons R, the whole apparatus, indicated generally by the reference character A, may be, as before stated, folded 7 back out of the way, as indicated in Figure 4, and there clamped in place by the hand screws 31.
Each of the ribbons R, being supported by separate hinged guide arms In, may be individually raised for the convenience of inserting additional sheets ,of paper between the platen and the first or original sheet of paper, then returned to their normal position before the platen, as is indicated in Figure 1, and between two or more of the additional sheets of paper, as is indicated in the enlarged sectional view, Figure 8 of the drawings.- Reference character 39, representing the first or original sheet of paper, and 40, representing the additional sheets of paper. .It may be here stated that hinges' H are adapted to fTictionally support the guide arms III in their raised or lowered positions. In order that the guide arms In may support the ribbons R inproper relation before the platen P, a cut-out 41 is provided in their, lower edges whereby to clear set screws 42, provided in hubs 43, at the opposite ends of platen P.
The cut-outs 4i being provided on arms W, permit of the arms being brought in closer relation to the axis of the platen whereby the ribbons R, may be operated through the shortest distance possible and substantially in a straight line from their respective takeup spools 44, to and before the platen P, as shown in Figure 2.
Mounted on carriage I2 is suitably arranged ribbon operating mechanism comprising, essentially, the said ribbon takeup spools 44, spool operating spindles 45, spindle operatinggears 46, and on cross frame 29, are mounted racks 41;

It will be noted that 7 upper clutch member 49, is splined on spindle 45, by means of key pin 51, fastened tightly into and extending out from the spindle 45, on both sides thereof; the outstanding ends of the key pin, extend into and loosely fit opposite elongated slots 58, formed longitudinally in the body of the :lutch member.

Rotatively fitting reduced portion 45', of spindle 45, is mounted a flanged collar 69,'which is free to rotate between collar 66, and the shoulder formed by the reduction of the spindle as at 45". Fitted into an opening 10, in collar 66, and extending up from ,the side of the collar, is a spring post 1|, which extends up through a. curved or arcuate slot 12, formed through flange 69', of collar 69. Riveted into flange 59', as at 1'3, and extending down, is a spring post 14. Connecting the posts H and 14, is the automatic ribbon 'takeup spring 5|. Spring post 1|, also provides a limit stop to limit. the rotation of collar 69. Fitted into an opening. 15, in collar 69, and extending up from the side of the collar, is a ribbon spool operating pin 16. Shoulder 45", provides means for preventing collarBB, from being disengaged fromstop pin 1 I.
Reversing lever 5| is pivotally mounted on a fulcrum comprising a shouldered screw 11, which is threaded into a bracket 18, fastened by means of screws 19, centrally to the underside of plate l2. Extending up, and through anopening l2 on plate l2, and, centrally, from the horizontal portion of the lever, is a finger grip or lever portion 80. In the side of lever portion 80, are spaced, in an arc concentric with the axis of fulcrum screw 11, and equidistant on each side of the vertical renter-line of levers 6| and 80, and from a cenplunger 83, which engages the lever in one or the other of the countersinks, according to the position the reversing lever may be arranged; that is, to a clutch operating position, or to a neutral clutch position as shown in Figures 3 and 6. Supporting the ball 83, and its operating spring 84, is a screw threaded nut-like piece 85, whichis tightly fitted into bracket 82, centrally of, and directly opposite, the center countersink 8|, when the reversing lever is in its neutral position. The ball and spring being supported in a hole 86, formed or drilled partly through the piece 85.
To assist in the movement of the carriage l2, and to overcome the extra load of the carriage l 2, and apparatus A, that is required to be operated by the typewriter carriage and mechanism, a suitable tension spring '81, is provided and con-- nected at one of its ends, as at B8, toa bracket 89, which is fastened to the underside of plate l2, as by spot-welding, soldering, or any other suitable way, at its far side, as at 9B; the other end of spring 81, being fastened,as at 9| in theupper end of a cross frame support 92.
Rotatively mounted centrally on plate 12, and arranged in operative relation togears 68, is
provided a manually operated partial or segmental ribbon takeup mechanism to tighten the ribbons more than their normal tightness, while inserting sheets of paper around the typewriter platen and inserting the ribbons between the papers, or, so
that the platen may be reversed for various reasons during the operation of typewriting. Gear 93, is provided with a large circular opening 34,-
which is adapted to workably fit a circular hub 95, formed on a retaining plate 96, which is held in place on top of plate I2, by means of screws 91. Plate 96, is provided with a central opening 98, whereby the plate may be clear of bracket 82. Plate 96, is also provided with a curved or arcuate slot 99, through which is inserted a shouldered screw Hill, which is fastened in plate i2. Between the plate 96, and the head of the screw we, is provided a tension washer lili, for keeping the plate 96, in such position as it may be arranged. The length of slot 99, being such as to limit the rotation of gear 93, to a definite amount, that is, no more than is suflicient to tighten the ribbons R, the required amount.
Referring to Figures 3 and 4, and particularly to Figure 4, it will be seen that portable frame 32, is-being supported by a base plate m2, and upon which it may be moved back from the type writer several inches; or, the whole may be taken away from the typewriter and put away for future use, as before stated.
The side frames 3!, of portable frame 32, as well as those of detachably secured frame 33, are rigidly held apart and paralleL-respectively, to each other, and a suitable distance from each other, by means of, respectively, spacer rods 32', and screws 32", and spacer rods 33 and screws u'r. Frame 33, being adapted to be detachably secured to typewriter frame I, is made fast to the frame 'I,by means of screws 8, as is shown in Figure 5.
As before stated, during the period of the operation of typewriting, apparatus A, is caused to operate by and in the same period of movement of the typewriter carriage of such typewriter to which it may be attached, by reason of the fact that arms ll, frictionally engage the frame of the typewriter carriage. The arms i4, being securely fastened to carriage i2, and when opcharacter described, an inclined revoluble mechaerated by the typewriter carriage to which they maybe engaged, moves apparatus A, in the same instant. In such movement of apparaus A, gears 46, are caused to rotate by means of co-operating' racks 41, which are rigidly fastened, as by spotwelding, soldering, or by any other suitable means, to frames 29, along their top edges, to which they are at all times engaged. Clutch members 49, on being operated to engagement with clutch member 50, causes ribbon take-up spindle and mechanism to operate ribbons R, tautly across the longitudinal face of platen P, in, as before stated, the same instant of the movement of carriage i5, of suchtypewriter to which apparatus A, may be in operation with.
Having thus described the invention, it may be readily understood that the minor details of construction of the invention may be altered in. several ways without departing from. the spirit and scope of the invention, and without losing any of its attendant advantages. Therefore, what I claim is desired to be secured by Letters Patent.
I claim:
1. A multiple duplicating apparatus, of the character described, arranged in co-operative therefor, and a reciprocable platen carriage together with its platen and mechanism for operating the same, comprising an inclinable, longitudinally movable, revolubly mounted ribbon-takeupoperating mechanism-carrying carriage having a to simultaneously operate the said carrying-car- I riage and the ribbon-takeup operating mechanism in co-oper'ative relation with the usual mechanism for operating the platen of said machine longitudinally thereof. I
2. In a multiple duplicating apparatus, of the character described, a removable, longitudinally movable ribbomtakeup mechanism-carrying car-- riage, inclined ribbon-takeup spool spindles arranged at right angles to and through an inclined mounting plate and operably mounted in bearings secured thereto, ribbon-takeup spools detachably' and loosely mounted forrotation on the upper end of said spindles, a ribbon-takeup means carried by each of said spindles adapted to operate the spools and maintain a taut ribbonbetween a pair of respective ribbon spools, a pair of co-operating ratchet clutches carried by each of said spindles and adapted to be disengageably connected with each other, means to operate said clutches to and from engagement with each other and to a neutral position, a spindle-operating gear mounted on the lower end of each of said spindles, a tiltable mounting frame comprising a guide upon which to move said carriage, a rack rigidly supported in said frame, a pair of inclined, hinged ribbonguide arms-carriedby said-plate, a pair of said arms adapted to be disengageably connected to the carriage of a typewriter and movable therewith and to. operate said carrying carriage, said rack and gears being adapted to cooperate with each other for the operation of said takeup spindles, and means-tending to prevent said spindles nism-carrying frame,, an auxiliary typewriter ribbon operating mechanism-carrying carriage mounted in said frame for longitudinal movement parallel with the platen of a typewriting machine, ribbon operating mechanism adapted to operate a ribbon, or a series of ribbons, to and from respective automatic ribbon-takeup spools tautly across the longitudinal face of the said platen and in unison with the longitudinal movement of said platen, an automatic ribbon-takeup mechanism or rewind carried by a ribbon-spool spindle and adapted to connect said spindle with a spool mounted thereon, means for arranging said ribbon, or ribbons, and the'operating mechanism therefor in an inoperative or neutralposition, said revoluble frame adapted to support and guide the said carrying carriage, and a mounting hinged ribbon-supporting-guide carrying-carriage, a detachable tiltable carrying-carriage-supporting frame having removablecarriage-guiderails supported therein, and having takeupmechanism operatingracks securely mounted therein, an inclined plate upon which to mount :s'aid mechanism and ribbon guides, said guide rails being adapted to support and guide said plate in a movement parallel with the platen of a typewriter, inclined ribbon-takeup spool spindles arranged at right angles to and through said plate and operably mounted in bearings secured thereto, ribbon-takeup spools detachably and loosely mounted for rotation on the upper end of said spindles, an automatic ribbon-takeup means carried by each of said spindles adapted to operate the spools and maintain a taut ribbon between a pair of respective ribbon spools, a pair of co-operating ratchet clutches carried by each of said spindles, means to operate said clutches to and from engagement with each other and to a neutral position, a spindle-operating gear mounted on the lower end of each of said spindles and in co-operative relation with a co-relative rack, and an independent manually operated ribbon-takeup device mounted on said plate adapted to operate said spools to wind the ribbon and to maintain a taut ribbon.
5. In a multiple "duplicating apparatus, of the character described, an automatic inclined ribbon takeup mechanism mounted on an inclined, longitudinally movable carriage comprising'a plate, a detachably mounted tiltable frame providing guide rails upon which to move said carriage and having ribbon-takeup mechanism-operating racks securely mounted therein, a series of ribbontakeup spool spindles arranged through said plate and operatively mounted in bearings secured thereto, a gear mounted on the lower end of each of said spindles and in co-operative relation with a co-relative rack, a pair of co-relative ratchet clutches mounted on each of said spindles and meansto operate said clutches to and from an engaged or disengaged position and to a neutral position, ribbon-takeup spools detachably and loosely mounted for rotation on the upper end of each of said spindles, and automatic ribbontakeup means carried by each of said spindles adapted to operate the spools and maintain a taut ribbon between a pair of respective ribbon spools and in parallel relation with the longitudinal face-of a typewriter platen.
6. In a multiple duplicating apparatus, of the character described, a tiltable, inclined, longitudinally movable ribbon-takeupmechanism carriribbon-operating mechanism,

tion of the typewriter, automatic ribbon-takeup mechanism for thus operating said series of ribbons across the longitudinal face of said platen mounted in an inclined longitudinally movable carriage, hinged inclined ribbon guide arms for mechanism and to support said ribbons in vertical parallel relation to each other and to the longitudinal face of the platen, a tiltable frame providing guide rails or guides upon which to move said carriage back and forth. said guides being removably supported in said frame and adapted to support said carriage in an inclined plane inclined toward and parallel to the axis of said platen, racks securely fastened in said frame and arranged in cooperative relation to gears carried by said takeup mechanism, means to position the takeup mechanism in an operative or inoperative position, and auxiliary means to automatically urge the longitudinal movement of said carriage during the operation of typewriting and to cooperate with the mechanism for causing the movement of the platen carriage of a typewriter in the operation of typewriting.
8. A revoluble multiple duplicating apparatus, of the character described, comprising an inclinable, longitudinally movable ribbon-takeup operating mechanism carrying-carriage, a plurality of pairs of inclined ribbon guide arms hingedly mounted on said carriage, ribbon spools detachably and loosely mounted for rotation on said ribbon-takeup operating mechanism, and an inclinable or folding carrying-carriage mounting frame adapted to be detachably secured to the frame of a typewriting machine and readily arranged to a folded position in back of said machine whereby the same together with the said machine may be moved, in the usual manner, to an out-of-the-way place within a standard typewriter drop desk.
9. In a multiple duplicating apparatus, of the character described, having upwardly inclined, automatically operated ribbon-takeup spool-opera-ting spindles, a ribbon spool detachably and loosely mounted for reversible rotation. on each of said spindles, and resilient means for operably connecting respective spools and spindles together and for automatically operating said spools to rewind the ribbon to maintain a ribbon tautly between a pair of respective ribbon spools.
10. In combination, a typewriting machine having the usual frame, type bars and operating mechanism therefor, and a reciprocable platen carriage together with its platen, a revoluble, inclined auxiliary carriage also reciprocable'relative to the frame and operable by and with the operation of said platen carriage, an inclined, automatic ribbon-operating mechanism suitably arrangedon said auxiliary carriage and having a ribbon arranged to co-operate with the said typebars, and a revoluble mounting frame in which to reciprocate the said auxiliary carriage, the said mounting frame being adapted to be secured to frame of said machine and in co-operative relation to the mechanism thereof.
ll. In an auxiliary multiple duplicating apparatus, of the character described, adapted to be arranged in co-operative relation to a typewriting machine having the usual frame, type bars and operating mechanism therefor, and a .platen and platen carriage'reciprocable on said frame, a ribbon-takeup operating .mechanism carrying-carriage, a revoluble, ribbon-takeup mechanism adapted to operate a ribbon autornatlcally across the longitudinal face of the said platen, a revoluble frame'providing a mounting for said carriage, and a mounting frame in which to revolubly mount said revoluble frame.
. .12. A detachable auxiliary multiple duplicating apparatus, of the character described, adapted to be arranged in co-operatlve relation to a typewriting machine having the usual frame, platen and platen carriage and its usual operating mechanism, comprising an arrangement of auxiliary, inked ribbon-takeup mechanism, a, revoluble frame for supporting a carriage for carrying said takeup mechanism adapted to be detachably se cured to the frame of said machine, a mounting frame in which to revolubly mount said frame adapted to be detachably secured to the frame of said machine, the said takeup mechanism being adapted to be operated by and with the operation of said platen carriage, and a portable slide upon which to adjust said mounting frame and the said mechanism being supported thereby into and out of co-operative relation to the said machine.
13. In a multiple duplicating apparatus, of the character described, having a series of oppositely parallel, inked ribbons arranged to travel tautly in vertical parallel relation to each other across the longitudinal face of the platen of a typewriting machine, automatically operated spool spindles and mechanism for automatically operating the same, ribbon takeup spools loosely mounted on said spindles, said mechanism comprising" gears and gear racks and an arrangement of ratchet clutches arranged to automatically operate said spindles, resilient means, comprising a coiled or helical spring, disposed beneath a spool adapted to connect a spool and spindle together and towind the ribbon to prevent any slack therein, and friction means arranged in co-operative relation to a spindle and its beering, said means tending to prevent a spindle from being reversed from one direction of rotation to that of an opposite direction of rotation.
14. In auxiliary duplicating apparatus, of the character described, in combination with a. typewriting machine having the. usual frame, platen and reciprocable platen carriage, type bars, inked ribbon, and operating mechanism therefor, the
said apparatus, comprising an auxiliary resilient ribbon-takeup mechanism having upwardly inclined ribbon spool takeup spindles included therewith, the said takeup mechanism being mounted in a frame adapted to reciprocate in parallel relation to said platen, a. revoluble frame for supporting said reciprocable frame, a mounting frame in which to adjustably revolve said revoluble frame into and out of co-operative relation to the said mechanism of said machine, ratchet clutches and a gear carried by each spindle, gear racks carried by said revoluble frame and arranged in co-opcrative relation to said gears, and the said reciprocable frame being adapted to be operated by and with the operation of said platen carriage.

In combination, a typewriting machine having the usual frame, type bars and operating mechanism therefor, and. a platen and platen carriage reciprocable on said frame, a revoluble, inclined auxiliary carriage mounted for reciprocation relative to said frame, an automatic ribbon-spool operating and spool-carrying mochanism suitably arranged on said auxiliary carriage, and a coiled or helical spring disposed beneath a. ribbon spool' and adapted to connect the rlbbon-spool-and a relative, spool-operating and carrying mechanism together.
