Patented Dec. 21, 1937 UNITED" STATES PATENT OFFICE common James E. Annen, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignor to Sutherland Paper Mich.
Application July 22,
'1 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide a container in which the body portion at least may be formed of fibrous material such as container board having the advantages of a tight sealing of a screw thread and at the same time one in which the cover may be quickly engaged or released with a slight rotative movement.
Second, to provide a container having these advantages in which the cover has a highly efficient seal and at the same time one in which the parts are economical to produce.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my container partially in vertical central section.
Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the cover.
Fig. 3 isa fragmentary side elevation of the container body.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view illustrating the initial position of the cover in closing.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view showing'the relation of the cover and the body as the cover approaches its final seating or completely closed position.
v Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing the cover in its completely closed position.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view illustrating the grasping of the cover for'the final closing operation. A
The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises a cylindrical body I of fibrous material having a fiber bottom 2 provided with a downturned flange I joined to the body by the upwardly and inwardly turned joint seam. 6.
In the embodiment illustrated, the bottom 2 has a reinforce cr supplementary bottom 5 having a downturned flange I at its edge snapped over or engaged above the bead 1 formed by the'seam.
The body has a plurality of spiral threads or ribs I pressed therein, these ribs being arranged in overlapping relation and their upper ends merging into the upper portion'of the body. In the particular embodiment illustrated, there are three of such spiral ribs or threads and they are of relatively high pitch. 6
The cover designated generally by the numeral is preferably of metal and has a convex body portion II with an upwardly projecting cylindrical 66 flange ll terminating in an outwardly extending Company, Kalamazoo, I
1935, Serial No. 32,489 (Cl. 229-) downwardly facing channel rim l2 adapted to receive and wedgingly expand the upper edge of the body portion, the rim of the. cover having an outwardly curved inner portion l3 engaging the edge of the rim of the body and flaring it out as shown at It when the cover is completely seated, thus forming a wedging sealing engagement with the cover and the body.
The edge iii of the cover rim is preferably turned upwardly providing a rounded edge It which slides over the body, the body however being supported by this edge so that the container is not likely to be split or broken when the cover is forced to closed'position and the upper edge of the body is flared outwardly into a sealing engagement with the cover as described.
The cover flange merges with the body portion into an annular curved surface ll so that the cover is easily slipped into the container. The
flange of the cover is provided with a plurality of spiral ribs or threads i8 merging at their lower ends into the curved surface in, their upper ends however terminating short of the upper edge of the flange or the rim of the flange so that the cover has a continuous annular outwardly flared body into meshing engagement so that a rela-- tively slight rotative movement will completely seat the cover, clamping the rim down upon the edge of the body, and expanding and fiaring the top portion of the body outwardly so that a very effective sealing joint results. The rounded lip i6 slips easily over the outside of the container and engages and supports it throughout the circumference thereof at a point adjacent the outwardly flared portion. This engagement eflectively prevents the splitting or fracturing of the edge of the container as it is flared outwardly as described. The cover may be released in the same way; that is, a relatively slight rotative movement in the opposite direction permits the withdrawal oi. the cover with a longitudinal movement relative to the body. I
My improved container is economical in its parts, has the advantage of very rapid and eifeciii tive cover closing and one which may be clamped tightly and at the same time can be quickly and easily released.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a very practical embodiment. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain v modifications in structure which I contemplate as it is believed that such modifications will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which my invention relates.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
