Description

Oct. 2G, 1937. H, G, RATTEY 2,097,240/ DREDGING CONTAINER Patented Oct. 26, 1937 UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE DREDGING CONTAINER Application December 18, 1936, Serial No. 116,611
2 Claims.
The invention relates to a dredging container for dispensing spices and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a dredging container of the above type having a friction closure, said closure having dispensing openings therein and a control slide attached to the friction closure as a unit, and wherein the friction closure is provided with a raised panel containing the openings so that the control slide may Contact therewith and be guided by the flange of the friction closure.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the preferred form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional View taken on theV line 3 3 of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a slightly modified form of the invention, and 1nlFig. 5 is a sectional View of the slide shown in The invention relates broadly to a dredging container for dispensing powdered spices and the like. The container comprises a body portion preferably of metal having metal ends seamed thereto. One of said ends has a central opening with the metal surrounding said opening shaped to form a friction seat. A friction closure is provided for said opening having a raised central panel with dispensing openings formed therein. The closure has a depending friction wall which is adapted to t within the friction seat, said wall having a portion thereof bent outwardly to form an annular flange which overlies the friction seat. This annular flange is substantially in a plane containing the central raised panel, A slide having dispensing openings formed therein is mounted on the friction closure. The slide has a portion thereof overlying the raised panel and the annular flange of the friction closure and is turned under the annular flange for holding the same in sliding engagement with the friction closure. As may be readily seen in the drawing, by simply moving the slide longitudinally of the container, the openings therein may be brought into registry with the openings in the panel of the closure for dispensing the contents of the container.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the container embodying the invention is indicated at 6 having a body portion 1 preferably of sheet metal and ends 8 and 9 seamed thereto by the conventional double seams as indicated at I0, I in the drawing. The end 8 has a central opening II, the metal adjacent said opening being bent upwardly and downwardly to form a friction seat I2. A closure I3 is provided for the container having a raised central panel I4 and a friction wall I which is so dimensioned as to tightly engage the friction seat I2 provided there for in the container end. The closure I3 has an annular ange lli which is adapted to overlie the friction seat I2 and is substantially in a plane containing the raised panelV I4. The closure I3 is provided with dispensing openings I'I which communicate directly with the contents of the container.
A movable slide I8 is mounted on the friction closure and is provided with dispensing openings I9. In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, this slide member has a portion which completely overlies the raised panel I4 and the annular flange I6 of the closure and is provided at its periphery with a down-turned ange 2 I A portion of this flange is out away as indicated at 22 in the drawing and turned beneath the annular flange I6 of the closure for retaining the slide in movable contact with the friction closure. As may be readily seen from the drawing, this slide may be moved longitudinally of the container for bringing the holes therein into registry with the holes in the friction closure for dispensing the contents of the container; a further movement of said slide bringing the holes out of registry for closing the openings in the friction closure. It may be further noted that the depending ange 2I will abutagainst the edges of the flange I2 of the friction closure, which acts as a limiting stop for the forward and backward movement of the slide on the friction closure. It will also be noted that the slide and the closure may be pried from the container as a unit to give access to the interior o-f the container when it is desired to remove large amounts of the contents thereof.
Referring to the modified form of the invention shown in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawing, the slide member 20 has cut-away portions 23 and 24 which are provided at the ends thereof with raised portions 25 and 26. These raised portions may be grasped by the lingers for moving the slide to cover or uncover the dispensing openings in the container. The slide in this form of the invention also has portions'21 and 28 which are turned under the flange I6 of the friction closure. Except for the fact that this form of slide is smaller than the other and is shaped slightly different, it performs the same function ing openings or may be removed therefrom inV bulk. A container of this type is very inexpensive to manufacture and simple in construction of parts.
It will be obvious that minor changes in the details. of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire tovsecure` by Letters Patent, is- Y l. A dredging container comprising a body portion, ends searned thereto, one of said ends hav-- ing a central opening with the metal surround ing said opening shaped to form a friction seat, a friction closure for said opening having a raised central panel with dispensing openings formed therein, and a depending friction Wall adapted to fit within the friction seat, said friction Wall terminating in an annular flange adapted to overlie said friction seat, said annular flange being substantially in a piane containing the raised central panel, and a slide having dispensing openings therein adapted to be brought into and out of registry with the dispensing openings in the friction closure, said slide overlying the raised panel and the annular iiange of the friction closure and having a portion thereof turned under the annular flange for holding the same in sliding engagement with the friction closure.
2. A dredging container comprising a body portion, ends seamed thereto, one of said ends having a central opening with the metal surrounding said opening shaped to form a friction seat, a friction closure for said opening having a raised central panel with dispensing openings formed therein, and a depending friction wall adapted to t Within the friction seat, said friction Wall terminating in an annular flange adapted to overlie said friction seat, said annular flange being substantially in a plane containing the raised central panel, and a slide having dispensing openings therein adapted to be brought into and out of registry With the dispensing openings in the friction closure, said slide overlying the raised panel and the annular flange of the friction closure and having a portion thereof turned under the annular flange for holding the same in slid ing engagement with the friction closure, said slide having a depending flange extending around its periphery, said flange acting as an abutment against the slide on the'friction closure for limiting the forward and backward movement of the slide on the friction closure.
