Description
D'. HAIRE; p g Bed-Bottom.
No. 209,676. Patented Nov. 5, 1878.
WITNESSES ML & ii 1 ATTOR N EYS NJEI'ERSA PNOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D Q I UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
DANIEL HAIRE, OF LIME SPRING, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,676, dated November 5, 1878; application filed February 11, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL HAIRE, of Lime Spring, in the county of Howard, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and construction of the several parts of a bed-bottom, whereby convenience, simplicity, and economy are secured, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use myinvention, I will proceed to describe its construction.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification Figure 1 represents a lon gitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a plan view.
In the figures, A represents one of the side pieces of an ordinary bed, and a a are the slats. Upon these slats, and steadied or held in any convenient manner, are a series of coiled-wire springs, B B B. As many of these springs may be used as desirable. Upon these springs is placed a slatted frame, composed of a center section, 0, to which are hinged two end sections, 0 0. These sections are all composed of a series of slats, d and d, which are placed close enough together to make a comfortable and durable frame.
It will be seen thatthe central section, 0, is hinged to the end sections, 0 O, at the top at one end and the bottom at the other end, so-
' that when in use the bed-bottom will conform to the shape of the body lying upon it.
E represents a head-rest, which is hinged to the center section, 0, and provided with arms I, for adjusting it at different angles to suit the inclination of the upper body and head.
on m represent hook-locks, which are used for holding the frames together. These locks consist of metal bars having angular hooks at top and bottom, as shown, which overlap and underlap, respectively, the slats of the bed and slats of the frame.
By hingin g the sections of the upper frame together said sections may be folded up for transportation, and then, in lying upon them, they yield at their joints and accommodate themselves to the shape of the body.
This frame with sections may be placed upon any bed having springs, and will act in the same manner as upon one made especially for it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the hinged sections 0 and O O, the hinges connecting the sections being alternately at top and bottom, said sections resting on coiled springs B B, and connected to the bed A by the hooked lock-bars .m m, which secure the bed to the frame, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of January, 1878.
DANIEL HAIRE.
