This invention relates to improvements in machines for grinding cylindrical bodies and refers more particularly to the type known as centreless grinders of the kind wherein the work is supported on a plate or work holder or support located between the co-acting faces of grinding and governing or control wheels, the grinding wheel being arranged to revolve at a greater speed than the control wheel, so that when the work piece is passed or placed between the faces of the said Wheels it is caused to revolve around its own axis during the operation of grinding, and angular adjustment of either the work holder, grinding wheel or the control wheel, is adapted to regulate or control the rate of travel of the work between the co-acting faces of the said wheels.
Machines of the aforesaid kind are adapted for use in continuous or straight through grinding of rollers, rods, tubes and the like, also for use in grinding shouldered or taper bodies which are passed into the throat formed by the opposing faces of the grinding and control wheels in conjunction with the work support, after the said wheels have been moved apart to' receive the work piece.
The means usually employed for imparting sliding movement to either the grinding wheel or the control wheel towards and away from each other to open the throat to receive the work piece or permit of removal of a finished work piece, comprises a rotatable and longitudinally confined fee-d screw arranged to engage with a nut fixed to the grinding or the control wheel head, in conjunction with lever or like mechanism arranged to impart a part rotary movement to the aforesaid feed screw and consequent longitudinal movement to the grinding wheel or the control grind the smaller diameter of the said work piece.
The object of the invention is to provide new or improved means whereby the lever or like operating mechanism is adapted to effect a comparatively large opening movement of the throat of the machine to permit of the ready introduction of the large diameter of a shouldered or two or more diameter work piece, when it is desired to grind the small diameter of the said work piece, and more particularly work pieces having both ends of a larger diameter than the intermediate part thereof.
The invention consists in the provision of means whereby a combined longitudinal and part rotary movement is imparted to the feed screw to provide a longitudinal sliding movement to the grinding or control wheel connected therewith, whereby a quick and then a slow inward movement is imparted to the said grinding or control wheel, and vice versa, in the operation of the lever or like mechanism, such being adapted to provide a comparatively large opening of the throat to permit of the passage therethrough of a large diameter of the work piece, and a quick initial closing movement of the grinding or control Wheel followed by a slow movement into operative contact with the work piece.
This invention also consists in the provision of means whereby the aforesaid cam mechanism can be made inoperative at will so that only a part rotary movement is imparted to the feed screw by the lever or like operating mechanism, when it is desired to impart the normal slight opening and closing movement of the throat.
The invention further consists in means whereby the feed screw can be locked and prevented from longitudinal movement, as for instance when it is desired to use the machine for continuous straight through grinding.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practical effect, reference is made in the following description to the accompanying drawings in which:-
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of one form of centreless grinding machine to which the invention is applicable.
Figure 2 shows a longitudinal sectional view of the front end of the feed screw, and means for imparting a longitudinal and part rotary movement thereto, in accordance with one form of this invention.
Figure 3 shows a longitudinal sectional view of the rear end of the feed screw and means for looking or preventing longitudinal movement of same.
Figure 4 shows a longitudinal sectional view of a modified arrangement for imparting a lonscrew, in conjunction with means for preventing longitudinal movement of same.
Figures and -6 are side and end views respectively of the cam sleeve.
According to one practical mode of carrying the invention into effect, in suitable bearings in the bed or frame I of the machine is mounted a feed screw 2 which is adapted to be longitudinally confined at will, or made capable of a longitudinal sliding movement, and arranged to engage with a nut or screw threaded box' 3 fixed to the underside of the grinding wheel head 4- slidably mounted on the bed I of the machine, and adapted to have imparted thereto a forward or backward longitudinal movement toward or away from a control wheel 5 carried by a head fixed to the bed of the machine. The feed screw 2 is provided at its outer end with a hand wheel 6 or the like for rotation of same by hand, when it is desired to impart a considerable amount of movement to the grinding wheel, in which condition the said feed screw 2 is prevented from 1ongitudinal movement, as hereinafter described. As seen in Figure 2, on a bearing sleeve 1, which 'is keyed to and longitudinally fixed on the feed screw 2, is freely mounted a clutch box 8 or the like, provided with clamping means, such as a lock bolt 9; whereby it can be clamped or fixed at will on its aforesaid sleeve part I, and it is further provided with a lug for attachment of an operating lever l0, whereby, in known manner, a part rotary movement can be imparted to the feed screw 2 for effecting a slight longitudinal movement to the grinding wheel 4a foropening and closing the throat.
On thefeed screw 2 is freely mounted a second sleeve H which is longitudinally confined between a shoulder 12 formed on the said feed screw 2, and a thrust washer I3 located between the fixed bearing sleeve 1 of the clutch box 8 or the like.
The aforesaid second sleeve 1 I is slidably keyed to an outer sleeve I l, in which is formed a cam groove consisting of a helical or inclined part l5 and a plain non-inclined part l6, and is arranged to be engaged by'a cam roller I! carried on the clutch box 8. The said cam sleeve I4 is free to rotate with the inner sleeve l I to which it is slidably keyed by a peg I8, but is longitudinally confined, which may be effected by forming on the inner end of the said cam sleeve [4 a flanged part I9 arranged to be engaged by an annular recess 20 in a plate 2| attached to the side member 22 of the frame of the machine. Means arealso provided whereby the cam sleeve can be locked and prevented from rotation at will, which, in one convenient arrangement comprises a screw plug 23 mounted in the said fixed plate 2| and adapted toengage with a hole 24 formed in the cam sleeve M when it is desired to make same operative for imparting longitudinal movement to the feed screw 2, or disengage from said hole when it is desired to render said cam sleeve inoperative, as hereinafter described.

The said screw plug 23 is also adapted to be moved into and means are provided which are adapted at will to either allow or prevent longitudinal movement being imparted to the feed screw 2. In one convenient arrangement we mount on a reduced end 2a of the feed screw 2 a sleeve part 2! which is supported at its inner end by a thrust washer 28, and at its outer end by a nut 29 fixed on the end of the feed screw 2. The aforesaid sleeve part 21 is slidably and non-rotatably carried in a flanged plate or bracket 30 fixed to the frame. of the machine, which in one convenient arrangement may be effected by a peg 3| in the bracket 30, engaging with a longitudinal slot 32 in the said sleeve 21, and in the said bracket is mounted a screw plug 33 having a tapered inner end 34 adapted to engage with a tapered hole 35 formed in thesaid sleeve part 2'! whereby the feed screw 2' can be longitudinally confined at will, but free to rotate, and upon removal of said plug 33,the feed screw 2 is free to have imparted thereto" a longitudinal movement.
The operation of the mechanism is as follows:
When it is desired to use the machine for grinding the intermediate or small diameter of shouldered work pieces, and to open the throat of the machine sufliciently wide to permit of the ready passage therethrough of the large diameter of the work piece, according to the arrangement as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the clutch box 8 is clamped to the sleeve 1 and the plug 33 is withdrawn from engagement with the longitudinally confined and non-rotatable sleeve 21 on the feed screw 2, and the other plug 23 is moved into engagement with the hole 24 in the cam sleeve l4. Assuming the grinding and control wheels to be in their closed or operative position, upon imparting a part turningmovement to the feed screw 2' through the lever or like operating mechanism, a slight longitudinal movement will be imparted to the grinding wheel head 4 by the rotation of the screw in the nut 3, moving same away from the control wheel" 5", during which the cam roller I! on the clutch box' 8' moves through the non-inclined part [6 of the cam groove. in the cam sleeve l4, and when the cam roller I'I enters the helical or inclined part l5 of said groove, a quick and pronounced or'increased opening longitudinal sliding movementis imparted to the feed screw 2 and the grinding wheel head 4, suflicient to permit of the easy passage through the throat between the grinding and control wheels of' the shouldered or large diameter of a work piece. Upon the reverse movement of the operatinglever ID, a quick closing movement will be imparted to the grinding wheel, followed by a slow movement into operative contact with the small'diameter of the work piece. When the throat is again opened the finished work piece canbe removed by hand, or ejected by any suitable ejector mechanism.
When it is desired to use the machine for grinding shouldered bodies by passing the smalldiameter of same into the throat, and consequently only a slight opening and closing. movement 4, the means for imparting a longitudinal and part rotary movement to the feed screw, and the means for locking or preventing longitudinal movement of same, are located together at the front end of said feed screw, thus providing a simplified construction and arrangement of said mechanisms, in which a bearing sleeve la is keyed to and longitudinally fixed on the feed screw 2, and has freely mounted thereon the clutch box 3w or the like provided with a clamping bolt 9a whereby it can be clamped or fixed at will on the aforesaid sleeve part la, and is further provided with a lug for attachment of the operating lever liia.

The aforesaid second sleeve I la is slidably keyed to an outer sleeve E la in which is formed, as seen in Figure 5, a cam groove consisting of a helical or inclined part it and a plain or non-inclined part it, the said cam groove being engaged by a cam roller Ila mounted on an end plate 38 which is adapted to be detachably fixed to the end of the clutch box 8a by a screw Mi which may be removed whenever it is desired to render the cam mechanism inoperative, in which event the cam roller iia will fioat idly in its cam groove. The said cam sleeve Mat is free to rotate with the inner sleeve Ila to which it is slidably keyed by a peg I80. mounted in a ring or plate 3's fixed by screws or bolts to the side member 22b of the frame of the machine, but is longitudinally confined by means of a flanged part lla. thereon arranged to engage with an annular recess Eda formed in the aforesaid fixed plate 3?.
In the fixed plate 3i is mounted a screw plug 23a which can be rotated to assume either one of three positions. In Figure 4 the said screw plug is shown in its intermediate position moved into engagement with a hole E ia in the cam sleeve Ma whereby the latter is prevented from rotation and its cam made operative for imparting longitudinal movement to the work spindle. When the feed screw has been retracted so as to bring the tapered hole 39 therein to a position in alignment with the screw plug 23a, and the end of said plug is moved into engagement with said hole, the feed screw will be prevented from rotation and the grinding Wheel head will thus be rigidly fixed, as for instance when the machine is required for straight through or continuous grinding. Movement of the plug 23a to an outward position in which its inner end is clear of engagement with the hole 25a in the cam sleeve Mia will permit of rotation of the feed screw by means of the hand wheel for imparting any desired adjustment or length of travel to the grinding wheel head, after first releasing the clamping bolt 90; which looks the clutch box 8a, to the feed screw.
Although we have described the mechanism as being arranged to move the grinding wheel, it will be readily understood that the grinding wheel may be fixed, and movement imparted to the control wheel. Also, it is applicable to machines wherein the grinding and control wheels are peripherally opposed or peripherally and facially opposed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a grinding machine of the kind herein specified having a grinding wheel and a control wheel one of which wheels is movable toward and from the other and a feed screw rotatable to impart relatively slow movement to the movable wheel, a device for rotating said screw, and means including cam mechanism operable in response to predetermined actuation of said device to impart relatively rapid longitudinal movement to said feed screw whereby a quick and then a slow inward movement can be imparted to said movable wheel, and vice versa, said means being operative to provide a comparatively large opening of the throat to permit of the passage therethrough of a large diameter of the work piece.
2. In a grinding machine provided with mechanism according to claim 1, means whereby said cam mechanism can be made to operate idly with respect to the feed screw at will so that only a small rotational movement is imparted to the feed screw upon actuation of said device, whereby a normal slight opening and closing movement of the throat is effected.
3. In a grinding machine according to claim 1 means for locking the feed screw to prevent longitudinal movement while permitting rotational movement thereof.

In a grinding machine according to claim 1 wherein said device comprises a clutch box carrying an operating lever and adapted to be fixed or made free on the feed screw, and wherein said means comprises an inner sleeve freely mounted but longitudinally confined on the feed screw, an outer rotatable sleeve in which the inner sleeve is slidably keyed, said outer sleeve being longitudinally confined, and having formed in its periphery a cam groove arranged to be engagedby a cam roller mounted on the clutch box, and a fixed member carrying an element movable into engagement with the cam sleeve when it is desired to impart a combined rotary and longitudinal movement to the feed screw, or released from engagement therewith when it is desired to impart only a rotary movement to said feed screw.

In a grinding machine of the kind herein, specified having a grinding wheel and a control wheel one of which wheels is movable toward and from the other and a feed screw rotatable to impart movement to the movable wheel, means including cam mechanism operative to rotate the feed screw and also to impart longitudinal movement thereto whereby a quick and then a slow inward movement is imparted to said movable wheel, and vice versa, said means being operative to provide a comparatively large opening of the throat to permit of the passage therethrough of a large diameter of the work piece, and means for preventing longitudinal movement of the feed screw, comprising a fixed member carrying a plug, and a sleeve longitudinally confined on the feed screw and slidably carried in the aforesaid fixed member and with which the plug is engageable.
6. A grinding machine according to claim 1, wherein the cam mechanism embodies a sleeve having formed therein a cam groove comprising a helical or inclined part and a non-inclined part arranged and adapted for the purposes herein described.
