W. J. LEWIS SPATTER GUN Filed June 25, 1937 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 5 ll] A I I 4 j-EEi-j-i-j-i-iEi i-EEi -i 5 Inventor Attorneys Patented Sept. 14, 1937 UNITED STATES SPATTER GUN William Joseph Lewis,' Lexington, Ky. 7 Application June 25, 1937, Serial No. 150,382 7 3 Claims.
This invention is what may be termed a spatter gun, the object, intent and purpose of the invention being toprovide a device for shooting or squirting a liquid into the face and eyes of an assailant to frustrate a personal attack; and the invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the gun.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view throughthe gun,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig. 2, and Figure 6 is a perspective View of a cartridge.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that the gun comprises a body member 5 which is in the form of a rectangular block hollowed out to provide therein a chamber 6 opening at opposite sides of the body 5, and a tapered formation 1 at one end, namely the discharge end, of the gun body.
A cartridge 8 of rubber or other suitable flexible material has sealed therein a liquid 9 which, for example, may consist of a scented compound having a suitable alcoholic content so that when shot or squirted into the eyes or face of man or beast it will produce temporarily blindness thereby preventing and frustrating the assaulting or robbing of an intended victim equipped with such a gun.
The cartridge 8 is accommodated within the chamber 6 of the gun body 5 and said cartridge has a restricted end or neck portion IE! which fits conformably within the bore ll of the nozzle formation 1.
Arranged transversely of the bore II at the outer end of the latter is a puncturing plate l2 having an inner knife-like edge l3 for slitting the sealed end of the neck I!) when pressure is applied to the cartridge tending to contract the cartridge laterally and elongate the cartridge so that the sealed end of the neck l thereof will come into such contact with the edge l3 of plate l2 as will result in a slitting of said end of the neck I ll so that the contents of the cartridge I0 will discharge, with force, from the gun and into the face of the assailant.
For compressing the cartridge 8 in a manner just described there is provided a pair of opposed jaw members |4 that are pivoted to the body at one end, as at l5.
(Cl. 221-315) a The jaw members I4 work through the openings at opposite sides of the body 5 and at their inner edges are shaped to conformably engage the cartridge 8 as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Riveted or otherwise secured as at It to the rear end of the body 5 is a plate ll of metal or other suitable material the opposite ends of which are bent at right angles toproject forwardly from the end wall of the body 5 thereby presenting stops I 8 arranged in the path of shoulders or projections l9 provided at the free ends of the jaws M for limiting outward movement of the jaws l4 relative to the gun body 5.
From the above it will be seen that normally the parts are in the position clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To operate the gun the same is held in one hand of the operator and, by closing the hand, pressure on the jaws I4 results, causing these jaws to swing inwardly, thus distorting the cartridge l8 in a manner resulting in the sealed end of the cartridge coming into forcible contact with the knife edge I3 of plate l2 whereby said sealed end of the cartridge is slit and the liquid contents of the cartridge discharged under pressure from the nozzle end 1 of the gun into the face and eyes of the assailant.
It will be seen that a gun of this character will be a material aid in protecting ones self from bodily harm, can be readily carried in ones pocket, satchel or as otherwise found convenient, and can be cheaply produced. 7
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, a body provided with a chamber opening laterally at opposite sides of the body, said body at one end of the chamber being provided with a nozzle having a bore therethrough, a compressible cartridge arranged in the chamber and having a sealed neck fitted in the bore of said nozzle,a puncturing element secured within the bore of said nozzle and normally out of contact with the neck of said cartridge, and members normally" projecting outwardly of said chamber at opposite sides thereof and movable inwardly under pressure to distort said cartridge in a manner to bring the sealed neck thereof into'forcible contact with said puncturing element to thereby puncture said neck and liberate the contents of said cartridge.
2. In a gun of the character described, :a body provided with a chamber opening laterally of the body at opposite sides thereof, said body being also provided at one end of the chamber with a a nozzle having a bore therethrough, a pair of opposed members pivoted at one end to said body and movable laterally into and out of said chamber at opposite sides of the body, a compressible liquid-filled cartridge arranged in said chamber between said laterally movable members and having a sealed neck extending into the bore of said nozzle, a puncturing element anchored within the bore of said nozzle and adaptedto puncture the neck of said cartridge when lateral pressure is applied to the cartridge by inward movement of the aforementioned pivoted members, and means on said body at the end thereof remote from said nozzle and engageable with said movable members for limiting outward movement'of said members relative to said body. 3. In a gun of the character described, a body provided with a chamber opening laterally of the body at opposite sidesthereof, said body being and movable laterally into and out of said chamber at opposite sides of the body, a compressible liquid-filled cartridge arranged in'saidchamber between said laterally movable members and having a sealed neck extending into the bore of said nozzle, a puncturing element anchored within the bore of said nozzle and adapted to puncture the neck of said cartridge when lateralpressure is applied to the cartridge by inward movement of the aforementioned pivoted members, and means on said body at the end thereof remote from said nozzle and engageable with said movable members for limiting outward movement of said members relative to said body, said Vmeans including a I plate having end portions projecting across the openings at opposite sides of said body and said movable members having shoulders engageable with the ends of said plate for limiting outward movement of said members relative to said chamber.
