For convenience in manufacture, these pivot members are made in two parts, the lower part of which is in the form of a rod 25 having a rack 22 formed on it and threaded at its upper end as at 23 to receive a coupling sleeve M which engages the disc 25 of the upper ball shaped pivot member 26.
The racks 2'2 cooperate with pinions 2's on rods 28 journalled in the sleeve 25. Each rod is provided with a grasping handle 29, so that by turning the rod, its pivot member will be raised into its operative position or lowered into its inoperative position, 39 are fastening devices locking cross bars E5 in the positions to which they have been adjusted.
The operation of providing a fixed pivot for the vibrations of the vibratory support independent of its flexible mounting will now be apparent to those skilled in this art and is as follows:
A selected standard 57 is adjusted longitudinally of its bed and locked to the bed to bring lts pivot member at the proper location. One of the cross bars i5 is adjusted on the vibratory support to bring its recess in alignment with such pivot member. The handle 29 is then turned to cause the rack to move upwardly and move the pivot member 26 in a vertical direction into its operative position in its recess it. The vibratory support new has a fixed pivot for its vibration.
As soon as the unbalance has been determined for one plane of correction of the rotatable body, the corresponding pivot member is lowered into its inoperative position and the other pivot member is adjusted'into locked in its operative position to provide at a selected location a fixed pivot for the vibrations of the vibratory support.
It will now be apparent that the flexible mounting is entirely independent of the means for forming the fixed pivots.
If the balancing machine is to be used for quantity production of one article, the pivot forming means may be adjusted to their selected positions and the standards ll permanently secured to the bed in fixed positions.
In cases where a variety of bodies of different shapes and sizes are to be balanced the pivot forming means are adjusted longitudinally of the vibratory support.
The rotatable body under test and the vibratory support are wholly supported on the vibratory members and the pivot forming means does not carry any of the weight of the vibratory support and the rotatable body.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a new and useful balancing machine which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that this embodiment is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a balancing machine, a bed, vibratory members fixed at their lower ends to the ends of said bed, a vibratory support having its ends supported at the upper ends of said vibratory members, specimen supporting means adjustable along said vibratory support, said vibratory members forming the sole support for said vibratory support, specimen supporting means and the specimen being tested and pivot forming means adjustable along the bed between said fixed vibratory members and having means to engage said specimen supporting means to form a right or left end pivot for the vibrations of said vibratory support.
2. In a balancing machine, a bed, vibratory members fixed at their lower ends to said bed, a vibratorysupport having its ends supported at the upper ends of said vibratory members, specimen supporting means on said vibratory support and adjustable longitudinally thereof, said vibratory members forming the sole support for said vibratory support, specimen supporting means and the specimen being tested and means adjustable longitudinally of the bed between the fixed vibration members and having means to engage said specimen supporting means to form a fixed pivot for vibratory movement of said Vibratory support.
3. In a balancing machine, a bed, a pair of vibratory members at opposite ends of the bed and fixed thereto, a vibratory support having its ends supported at the upper ends of said vibratory members, specimen supporting means adjustable longitudinally of said vibratory support, said vibratory members forming the sole support for said vibratory support, specimen supporting means and tr e specimen being tested, pivot carrying standards adjustable longitudinally of the bed between said fixed vibratory members, and pivot forming means carried by said standard and adapted to engage with said specimen supporting means to form a selected fixed pivot for the vibratory movement of said vibratory support.
4. In a balancing machine, a bed, rotatably adjustable vibration members having their lower ends permanently fixed to the ends of the bed, a vibratory support having its ends carried at the upper ends of said vibratory members, specimen supporting means on said vibratory support, said vibratory members forming the sole support for said vibratory support, specimen supporting means and the specimen being tested, standards mounted on said bed between said Vibratory members, and pivot forming means on said standards and cooperating with said specimen supporting means to provide a fixed pivot for the vibratory movement of said vibratory support.
5. In a balancing machine, a bed, a pair of vibration rods at opposite ends of the bed and having their lower ends rotatably adjustable on said bed, means to secure said rods in their adjusted positions, a cradle in which the upper ends of said rods are rotatable, spaced specimen supporting means longitudinally adjustable on said cradle between the vibration rods at the ends of the cradle, and spaced pivot forming means having their lower ends longitudinally adjustable along the bed between the vibration rods at the end of the bed and having means to engage the specimen supporting means to form a right or left fixed pivot for vibratory movements of the cradle.
