UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
DAVID S'NEDEKER, OF JERSEY (/ITY, NEV JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES FOR DRIED FRUIT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208.698, dated October R, 15 78 li ation filed May 22, 187s.
the box Without the use of a picker, or with-' out smearing the fingers by immediate contact with the said contents.
The invention comprises a box of novel construction, whereby provision is made for the ready removal of the sides as well as the cover of the box, in order to expose the contents to the most complete and easy access.
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a box made according to my invention, the said box being shown as closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view, representing one portion of said box when the same is opened to afford access to the contents.
A are the sides of the box, said sides being 111016 of wood or other suitable material, and the shape of the box being preferably rectangular. B is the bottom, not directly attached to the adjacent edges a of the sides, but having glued, cemented, or otherwise attached upon its upper surface a sheet, C, of paper or other like flexible material. The corners of this sheet 0 are out away-as, for example, as shown at b-in order to form leaves D, which may be bent upward into a position re or less vertical to the central portion of n esheet, which is flat upon and glued or o herwise attached to the bottom B, and be en bent over and outward, as herein presly explained.
bl is the cover, of the usual slip-cover n and make.
In putting the parts of the box together the bottom B is placed within the sides A by being pushed in from the top, thereby bringing the innermost portions of the leaves D flat against the inner surfaces of the sides A, with the outer portions of said leaves projecting above the upper edges of the sides. Thejustmentioned outer portions of the leaves D are then folded outward and over the upper edges of the sides, and the cover E is then slipped onto its place, all as shown in Fig. 1. The outermost portions of the leaves Dbeing thus firmly clamped between the sides of the box and the flange c of the cover, the bottom B, together with the contents of the box, are securely suspended within the said sides, the retention of the bottom B in place being, in practice, to a greater or less degree assisted by the frictional contact of the edges of the bottom with the contiguous inner surface of the sides A.
Vhen it is desired to have access to or to remove the contents of the box, the cover is taken off and the bottom is pushed upward, thereby causing the detachment of the sides, so that the contents of the box are best exposed upon the upper surface of the bottom B, and simply surrounded by the outwardlyturned leaves I), all as indicated in Fig. 2.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination of the detachable bottom B, the sheet 0, of paper or other flexible material, attached to the bottom B, and having the leaves D, the sides A, and slip-cover E, the whole being constructed and arranged to clamp the outer portion of the leaves D between the flange of the cover E and the sides A, all substantially as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
