Description
June 22, 1937. v. H. ANDERSON URINAL iled Dec. 2, 1936 81mm M280 F lllll l I Patented June 22, .193?
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 11 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved urinal for various patients, particularly those who are unconscious that is to say, unaware that they may be voiding, though it maybe used for other patients.
The whole scheme is to provide a urinal that may fit in the crotch between the legs of the patient in order to catch the urine, there being an extension at the forward end of the urinal for the purpose of fitting under and conforming to the rump or buttocks of the patient in order to insure holding the urinal in position so that it will not become misplaced. The legs of the patient lie on opposite sides of the urinal as is shown in Figure l.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide an upward extension which fits as close as possible-to the urethra in order that when the patient is voiding the urine will easily enter the urinal and since the urinal is provided with an inclined bottom, the urine will easily flow toward the bottom of the urinal and therefore will not escape nor will not spill when the urinal is removed.
Another purpose is to provide a urinal which has at the entrance thereof, that is to say, where the urine enters upon leaving the urethra passage,-a wall or flange, such as will prevent a back flow of the urine after it enters the urinal.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide the wall which prevents the back fiow of the urine with a vertical opening though which the urine may pass, there being an additional opening of angular outline and adjoining the first opening, and through which a trained nurse can observe whether or not the inclined bottom is moist or soiled when the bed'covers are pulled down.
Still another-purpose is to provide a urinal having one of its ends facing toward the feet of the patient heavily weighted, so as to remain level .on the bed, and in such a manner that the weight of the rump or buttocks will not tilt the urinal.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative, and that while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desiredmodification of details and proportions may be made in the construction of the appliance according to circumstances.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing and claimed.
In the drawing: 4
Figure 1 is a view showing a torso of a patient with the improved urinal as applied, it being obvious that the urinal is for use to prevent soiling the bed clothes, particularly with patients who are either conscious or unconscious.
Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the improved urinal clearly illustrating the extension 5 that fits under the rump or buttocks of the patient with the entrance extension fitting adjacent the urethra so that the urine will easily enter the urinal without spilling and thereby soiling the bed clothes.
Referring to the drawing, l identifies the urinal which comprises a body, which may be any shape, size, and tapered in order to fit the crotch between the legs of the patient without undue inconvenience. This body of the urinal has an 15 inclined bottom 2 in order that the urine will flow downwardly and particularly will not spill when the urinal is removed.
The forward end of the urinal has an extenslon 3, which is adapted to fit under the rump 0r buttocks of the patient, for the purpose of retaining the urinal in a secure position as is shown 'in Figure 1. Also adjacent this extension 3 is an upward extension 4, which has an opening 412 to fit tight against the mouth of the urethra of the patient, so that when the patient is voiding the urine will easily enter the opening of the urinal and without soiling the bed clothes.
In order to prevent back-flow of the urine after entering the opening 4a, the urinal has a flange or a wall 5 which is located in a position as shown in Figure 2 to prevent this action, this flange or wall extends transversely of the mouth of the urinal and also vertically, to insure prevention of the spilling of the urine.
This opening 40. adjoins another opening of angular contour identified at l in the upper wall of the urinal, which will enable a trained nurse to observe whether or not the inclined bottom is soiled or otherwise indicating the patient has voided.
The end portion 8 of the urinal is heavily weighted to assist in holding the urinal balanced on the bed under the clothing and in such a manner as to prevent the weight of the buttocks from tilting the weighted end of the urinal upwardly. The outer surface of the upper wall of theurinalhas ahandle 9,whichcanbe easily grasped for the purpose of removing the urinal from its used position. The urinal as an article of manufacture has its forward end provided with a compound opening consisting of a substantially vertically positioned portion and a substantially horizontally positioned portion, the former for the reception of the urine, the latter permitting 5 sighting into the urinal to ascertain whether the interior bottom is damp or soiled.
