Application May 22,
2 Claims.
i .This'invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in razor blade sharpening apparatus. o o
The primary object of the invention is to provide a 'holder for av safety razor'blade with means o and adapted to be manually operated for presenting opposite sides of the cuttingedge of a safety razor blade to a honing lblock with the holder manually moved over the vook.
A further object of the invention is vto provide razor blade `sharpening apparatus of the foregoingcharacter embodying a novel type of honing block and supports therefor.
With the above and other objects in View that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing:-
Figure 1 shows razor blade sharpening apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention, the honing block and support therefor being illustrated in side elevation and the holder for the safety razor blade being shown in longitudinal section;
Figure 2 is a bottom blade holder;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the holder per se for the safety razor blade with the latch for retaining the blade in position illustrated by dotted lines in its released position;
Figure 4 is a detail sectional View taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary top plan View of the honing block and support therefor.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, the razor blade sharpening apparatus comprises a U-shaped frame having a top wall I0 and depending side Walls II, the top wall I 0 being covered by a felt strip I2 or other material that is attached thereto as at I3 to add comfort to the hand of the user during a sharpening operation.
A blade holder is pivotally and removably mounted between the side walls I of the frame intermediate the ends thereof as shown in Figplan view of the razor ures 1 and 2 and comprises a barrel portion I4 from which a pair of clamp plates I5 extend, the barrel portion I4 having a pivot pin I6 extending therethrough and through the side Walls Il of the frame with a head I1 upon one end of the pivot pin I6 that is adapted to be engaged by an intermediate portion of a lever I8 pivotally 193s, serial No. 81,296 (c1. 51-1-153) mountedas at I9 upon a side wall II for retaining the pivot lpin in position. When the lever I8 is moved from its Vpivotal mounting I9; the headI'l ofthe pivot pin I6 is 'exposed and the latter may then be removed to permit removal ofthe blade holder for insertion or removal of the 'razor blade 20 to be sharpened. A pair vof pins 2| extend between the clamping plates'l5 to aid in positioning the blade 20 in the clamping plate andffto insure sufficient projection of lthe cutting edge of the blade for a sharpening or honing operation. "I'lhe clamping platesl'jare moved in binding fengagement'with th'erazor blade 20 by'me'a'nsoi a U-shaped'strapA-2'2 pivotally mounted as at 23 upon each end of the clamping plates I5.
Pivotal movements of the blade holder are limited by shaft supported rollers 24 that are supported between the side walls II of the frame adjacent opposite ends, a side face of the razor blade 20 being moved into engagement with a roller with the cutting edge of the blade projecting from the roller for contact with a face of a honing block as illustrated in Figure 1. The razor blade 20 is adapted to be held in rm engagement with the movement limiting roller 24 by means of a lever pivoted in the frame and having an operating handle projecting above the top wall Ill of the frame, said top Wall as shown in Figures 1 and 2 having spaced anges 25 struck-out therefrom to provide a top opening 26 and a pin 21 extends through the flanges 25 and side walls II of the frame for the support of an operating handle for the blade holder between the flanges 25. The operating handle includes a hand grip 28 projecting through the opening 26 in the top wall I Il of the frame with a leg 29 ci the handle pivoted upon the pins 2l and a pair of opposed curved arms 30 respectively arranged at opposite sides of the pivot pin I6 for selective engagement with the clamping plates I5. When the hand grip 28 is in the position shown in Figure 1, one of the curved arms 3D moves the blade holder to the position illustrated, with the razor blade 20 held in rm contact with a guide roller 24 and in position for sharpening or honing one side edge of the blade. To present the other side edge of the razor blade 20 to a sharpening or honing surface, the frame is removed from the honing block, the hand grip 28 moved on the pivot pin 2l to cause the other curved arm 30 of the operating handle to be moved into engagement with the adjacent side of the razor blade holder for shifting the latter to a position reverse from that illustrated in Figure 1, the frame carrying the blade holder then being moved in an opposite direction over the sharpening or honing block.
The honing block as illustrated in Figures 1 and 5 is preferably formed of wood or other brous material and is comprised of two sections 3l and 32 secured together in any appropriate manner, the grain o-f the section 3| extending transversely thereof while the honing face of the section l is longitudinally scored as at 33 to` increase the effective honing operation. The'exposed face of the section 32 is covered by a leather strap 34 or the like which may be used for adding a polish or luster to the cutting edge of the blade. The support for the honing block includes a bench clamp 35 that is adapted to be attached to a support 36, the bench clamp 35 carrying an upstanding wall 31 from which a pin 3B laterallyy projects for reception in a cross opening in the honing block as shown in Figures l and 5, the honing block being supported at an inclination for convenience in manipulation of the frame carrying the blade bolder.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent and Ywhile there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claimzy,
1. In a Sharpener for safety razor blades, a U -shaped frame, a blade holder pivotally mounted between the side walls of the frame, means carried by the frame for limiting pivotal movements of the blade holder, a handle pivoted between the side walls of the frame and projecting through the upper end of the frame and having curved arms at its lower end straddling the blade holder for selectively moving and holding the blade holder into rm engagement with either of the movement limiting means, the blade holder cornprising a pair of clamping plates and a pivoted stop carried by opposite ends of the plates for moving the same into binding engagement with a blade.
2. In a `Sharpener for safetyl razor blades, a U -shaped frame, a blade holder pivotally mounted between the side walls of the frame, means carried by the frame for limiting pivotal movements of the blade holder, a handle pivoted between the side walls of the frame and projecting through the upper end of the frame and having curved arms at its lower end straddling the blade holder for selectively moving and holding the blade holder into firm engagement with either of the movement limiting means, the free ends of the curved arms being spaced apart a distance greater than the thickness of the blade holder whereby the latter has limited movements between the curved arms, the blade holder comprising a pair of clamping plates and a pivoted strop carried by opposite ends of the plates for moving the same into binding engagement with a blade.
