This invention relates to traveling or ladies hand bags in general, .and particularly to the kind which is adjustable so as to permit changes in its receiving capacity.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide a simple, relatively inexpensive device of this kind, consisting of two telesccping members which are movable relative to one another, and which may be fixed at any desired position to -one another.

A further object of this invention is to provide a telescoping, extensible traveling or ladys hand bag in which the two cooperating members are of a box-like form and are permanently, but adjustably associated with one another by means of an interior lining,

Another object of this invention is to provide in such a device suitable means for facilitating its intended operations.

'Ihe foregoing and still other objects of my invention will become more fully apparent from the ensuing description and the accompanying drawing, forming part of my disclosure, but by no means intended to limit the same to the actual showing, and in which Fig. l illustrates a vertical cross-sectional View through one form of my device, wherein the movable portion is disposed interiorly relative to the stationary portion, and

Fig. 2 is a similar cross-sectional View through a modied construction of my device, wherein the movable portion thereof is disposed exteriorly to the stationary portion.

Referring now specifically to the drawing, and particularly to Fig. 1, there will be seen at l0 a stationary outer member which is provided at its upper raised end with a closure I I, which extends centrally and longitudinally over the entire length of that member, and may be in the form of a zipper fastener or other suitable closing means. There are provided at two opposite sides of the stationary member Ill suitable carrying means I2, extending above the latter. Member I0 is open at its bottom, as indicated at I3, and its upper end forms a broad, substantially roof-like structure, terminating in a relatively wide, flat top area. The latter extends over the entire length of member I0 and accommodates closing means I I. These closing means preferably extend a short way downwards at the ends of member I0.

Within the stationary member I l), there is telescopingly mounted an interior, movable member provided with upright walls I4, and a bottom I5. The stationary and the movable members are connected at their interior surface by a lining I 6,

which extends from the upper end of the straight portion of stationary member downwards to its open end I3, where the lining is turned upon itself at Il, from which it passes over the exterior surface of side walls I4 of the movable member,

and over the upper edge thereof, whereupon the lining continues over the interior 4surface of walls I4, and covers the interior surface -of bottom I5. The movable member may be extended to the extreme outer position, indicated in broken lines in Fig. l, or may be adjusted to any intermediate position between that extreme outer position and its extreme interior position, as shown in full lines.

In order to facilitate the positioning of the two members relative to one another, I provided either interior or exterior guide means, such as shown at I8 and i9, wherein numeral I 8 denotes a channel affixed to one of the bag members in which is guided and with which telescopes slide member I9. The latter is xedly secured to the other member. Both members are preferably provided with a plurality of apertures 20, adapted to receive pins for holding the bag portions at their desired relation to one another.

The lining serves not only to provide a continuous interior surface for the bag, in either collapsed or extended position, but also serves as limiting means when the movable portion of the bag is in its extreme outward position, as shown r in broken lines.

Referring now to Fig. 2, this construction is very similar to that described above, with the exception that stationary member 2l becomes now the interior member and is again provided at its upper, raised end with a closure 22, and handles 23. The movable member 24 consists of sides 24', and a bottom portion 25. Closure 22 is disposed longitudinally and centrally over the entire length of member 2| and partially extends downwards at both ends of the latter.

There is again provided a lining 26, which is secured at 2I to the bottom open end of stationary member 2l, and extends along the outer surface of this member, whereupon it is turned upon itself at the upper edge of movable member 24, and extends along the interior 4surface of the latter member and over its entire interior bottom surface.

There are again provided either exterior or interior guide and adjusting means consisting of a channel member 28, attached to one of the bag members, in which is guided a sliding member 29, attached to the other bag member.

Both guide r l0 take the form of pockets or other utilitarian devices, and which is designed to extend over the upper edge of the movable member 213. Such outer covering is indicated in broken lines at 3i).

The interior of the bag may be divided into 15 compartments or may be equipped with pockets or other suitable improvements to enhance the utility of my device, which arrangements, however, are not shown since their provision is obvious and since their presence or absence does not if@ alter the basic construction and operation of my device.

While I have shown and described specic constructions of my invention, it is evident that changes and improvements may be made therein, and that the various auxiliary features illustrated may be altered, such as the closure arrangement or the guide `inea-ns for the bag members, and that such latter means may be placed, for instance, at

'0 the corners of the bag either exteriorly or interiorly, and I therefore reserve for myself the right to make changes and improvements in the construction of my device, without departing from the broad scope of my invention, as defined by b5 the annexed claims.

I claim:

1. In a traveling or ladys hand bag, stationary and movable members in telescoping engagement with one another, wherein the stationary member constitutes the interior member and the movable member constitutes the exterior member, means secured to the stationary member and adapted to overlap the upper edge of the movable member for concealing the joint between the two members, guide means associated with the two members and consisting of two telescoping parts both provided with apertures for receiving removable pins adapted to iix the relative position of the two bag members to one another, and a lining connecting the interior of both bag members.

In a device of the character indicated, two telescoping, box-like members, one being stationary, the other movable relative to the former, a pair of carrying means secured to two opposite sides of said stationary member and extending above the latter, a broad, substantially roof-like structure forming the upper end of said stationary member and terminating in a relatively wide,
