Qurinvention relates` to milk `can coolingcaps and more particularly to a type of can that may be usedin connection with a conventional type of milk can and aplunger type of agitating device used during the process of cooling milk.
The object of ourinvention is to provide a device that 'may be used fas "a cover for Va milk can 'and eventhoughitcloses the'top of the can it will still permit circulation of air over the milk. Another'objectis to provide such a device that need not be removed from the can when the milk is poured into the can.
Still anotherobject of the invention is to pro- -vide means.4 for `inserting `the agitator without removing the deviceand sealing the top of the device around the stem of the agitator when in use. I-
A still further objectpf :the invention is to provide a device.v that can be so constructed that it will fit a conventional type of milk can withoutl difficulty, being designed in such a manner as to t over the top of the can.
Other and further objects of our invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art from a considerationv of the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the top of the device illustrating the cover and latch arrangement in a closed position.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the device showing the auxiliary latch closed and the cover in an open position.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view of the entire device illustrating the manner in which the perforations are placed into the sleeve section and also the manner in which the device fits onto a milk can, and
Figure 4 is a plan view of the device with both the cover and the latch in an open position.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character Il! illustrates a cylindrical body having an outwardly projecting ange II angularly disposed, encircling its entire circumference, and a series of perforations I2 through the body I0 near its upper end. An annular plate I3 having a port I4 is fastened over the projecting ange I I by means of a bead I5 around the entire circumferential edge. There is an annular cover I6 pivotally mounted to the plate I3 at I'l employed to cover the port I4 and is held in a closed position by an angular projecting member I8 also fastened to the plate I3 at I9. The cover I6 is provided with a longitudinal slot 20 starting at the center of the cover (ol. 22o- 33) i6 and terminating at its outer edge as shown. The cover IB is retained in a xed position when closed by an angular member 2l contacting a member 4I8 fastened to the plate i3 at I9 when the cover I 6 is in a closed position.
An auxiliary latch 22 fastened to and pivotally mounted to the cover It at a point 23 outwardly from the center of the cover I6 is provided with an annular slot 24 registering-with the extreme center of the cover I6 and the longitudinal slot 2B. This latch22 `is further provided with a projecting member 25 employed to actuate same and a projecting member 26 fastened to the cover Iat 2l, is usedrto guide and retain the latch 22 when it is in a-closed position.

It is manifest to anyone acquainted with the art of cooling milk'that an agitating motion is imperative. `.The usual method employed `is to use a disc fastened to the end of a handle and submerging the disc in the milk using the handle to move it up and down. During this operation it is desirous tohave the warm air from the milk pass out of the can without allowing dust or other foreign matter to enter the can, thereby contaminating the milk. It is for this pur- Dose that the, device described is intended.
The entire device is placed over a milk can having its cover removed as shown in Figure 3. This will raise the top of the device a distance above the top of the can 28 permitting air circulation in and out of the can through the perforations l2. I'he auxiliary latch 22 is pivotally moved toward one side as shown in Figure 4, and the cover I 6 is also moved sideways to allow the port I4 to be open and unobstructed during the process of pouring milk into the can. The disc of the agitator or plunger not shown may be placed into the milk and the handle or stem of the agitator may be inserted into the slot 20 of the cover I6 so that it engages the slot at the extreme center of the cover I6. Next the auxiliary latch 22 is brought to a closed position which will then envelop the handle of the agitator at the center of the cover I6. The handle being of a smaller diameter than the slots 2U and 24 will permit free motion up and down without in any way exposing the milk in the can to the outside air except through the ventilating apertures I2. After the cooling operation is completed the agitator may be removed in a reverse manner and the latch 22 may be Abrought over to fully engage the guiding member 26, closing the entire top of the device and still permitting the Warm air from the milk to escape through the perforations I2 in the body l0.
While we have herein disclosed with considerable particularity a single embodiment of our invention it will be manifest that many changes in the general arrangement, form and configuration of the structure and parts thereof may be varied Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention what We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States, is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a cylindrical housing having its side Walls perforated at a point near the top, a top plate equipped with an opening, a cover pivotally mounted to said top plate and equipped with a longitudinal opening extending from its center to its outer edge, and an auxiliary latch pro vided with an annular slot, said latch pivotally mounted to said cover at a point outward from the center of said cover to provide a closing means for the longitudinal slot in said cover.
2. A device of the character described comprising a cylindrical housing having a plurality of perforations through the side walls at a point near its top, a flanged plate equipped with an annular opening fastened to the top of said housing, a cover of annular shape mounted pivotally to said flanged plate, said cover equipped with a longitudinal slot extending from its center to its circumferential edge, an auxiliary latch pivotally mounted to said cover at a point outward from the center of said cover to provide a covering for said longitudinal slot, said auxiliary latch having an annular slot employed to provide a central opening in the cover when said latch covers said longitudinal slot.

A device of the character described cornprising a cylindrical housing having a plurality of perforations through the side walls at a point near its top, a anged plate equipped with an annular opening fastened to the top of said housing, a cover of annular shape mounted pivotally to said ilanged plate, said cover equipped with a longitudinal slot extending from its center to its circumferential edge, an angularly disposed guide fastened to said top plate for engaging the cover when in a closed position, an auxiliary latch pivotally mounted to said cover at a point out- Ward from the center of said cover to provide a cover for said longitudinal slot, said auxiliary latch equipped with an annular slot employed to provide a central opening in the cover when said latch covers said longitudinal slot.
4. A device of the character described comprising a cylindrical housing having a plurality of perforations through the side Walls at a point near its top, a hanged plate equipped with an annular opening fastened to the top of said housing, a cover of annular shape mounted pivotally to said anged plate, said cover equipped with a longitudinal slot extending from its center to its circumferential edge, an angularly disposed guide fastened to said top plate for engaging the cover when in a closed position, an auxiliary latch pivotally mounted to said cover at a point outward from the center of said cover to provide a cover for said longitudinal slot, said auxiliary latch equipped with an annular slot employed to provide a central opening in the cover when said latch covers said longitudinal slot, and an engaging member fastened to said cover for supporting said auxiliary latch when in a closed position.
