The outer end of shaft 42 is provided with a manually operable hand wheel 43 which serves through the train of gears and rack, above described, 7 to cause a longitudinal positioning movement of the table II relative to the grinding wheel I4.
In the grinding of work pieces, such as crankpins on a multiple throw crankshaft, it is necessary-not only to grind the cylindrical body of the crankpintothe desired size and finish but it is also necessary to grind the checks or side end faces adjacent to the ends} of thecrankpin so that the distance between the cheeks comes within the required limits. To accomplish this re-.- sult, it is desirable to provide a grinding wheel with an operative peripheral surface for grinding the body or cylindrical portion of the crankpin and to provide such a wheel of a thickness which will-grind the cheeks of the pin to the required dimensions. It is accordingly desirable to-provide a' truing apparatus for not oniy-tming the periphery of the grinding wheel but which is adapted to also true one or both side faces thereof to true the wheel to the required thickness to produce the crankpin and cheeks of the required dimensions. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated. this apparatus comprises a supporting shaft 50 which-as illustrated in the drawing has its opposite ends clamped rigidly in the work heads 35 and 35 by means of the work clamps 36 and 31. A rotatable sleeve 5| is rotatably supported on the shaft and'is held in an ad'- justed longitudinal position thereon by means of a flange 52 which is formed as an integral part ofthe shaft 59. The-sleeve 5| is held in place on the shaft 58 in the proper relation with the fixed flange 52 by means of anadjustable collar 53 which is adjustably supported on the other end of shaft 50 by means of a threaded portion 54.
The sleeve 5| is provided with upwardly ex-' tending bosses 55 and-55 each of which is provided with an aperture 51 and 58 respectively which are arranged with their axes at right angles to the axis of the sleeve 5| and shaft 50.. A truing tool holder 59 and 50 are supported in the apertures 51 and 58 and locked in adjusted position relative thereto by means'of clamping screws GI and 52 respectively. Theouterends of the holders 59 and 68 serve to adjustably sup:
port a truing tool,'such as a-diamond truing tool and 68 respectively which are held in adjusted position thereon by clamping. screws 61 and 68 so that the .truing tools or diamonds may be readily removed and replaced when desired or adjusted relative to the holders.

An adjustable stop 85 is provided to limit the movement of the lever 15 in one direction. The stop 85 is adjustably supported on a base member 86 which is provided with a dovetailed surface 81 mating with a correspondingly dovetailed 88 on table II and arranged to be attachment in a definite position on the work table II.
In order that the diamonds or'truing tools 55 and 55 may be located in predetermined positionsrelative to the grinding wheel I for successive truing operations, it is desirable to provide a suitable locating means for accurately positioning the table II relative to the base iii. In the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, such a mechanism may comprise a stop 95 which is pivctally connected on a stud 95 on the base Hi. The

In the operation of this truing apparatus, the.

' It will thus be seen that there has been provided by this invention a truing apparatus in which the various objects hereinabove set forth together with many thoroughly practical advantages are successfully achieved. As many possible embodiments may be made of the above'invention and as many changes might o be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinbefore set forth, or shown in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. A grinding machine having a transversely movable rotatable grinding wheel, a longitudinally movable work table; means to traverse said table across the side face of the grinding wheel to true the same.
2. A grinding machine having a base, .a transversely movable rotatable grinding wheel, a
longitudinally movable work table, means to traverse said table longitudinally,'a rotatable work support thereomand a-truing apparatus therefor comprising a supporting member arranged to be held by said work support, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said member, a truing tool carried by said sleeve, a fixed stop on said base and an adjustable dog mounted on said table and arranged 'to locate the truing tool in a predetermined position with relation to the side face of the grinding wheel, means to rock said sleeve to pass the truing tool in an arcuate path across the side face of the grinding wheel, a second truing tool on said sleeve. and means including a second adjustable dog arranged to position said table-to locate the second truing tool in a predetermined position with the opposite side face of the grinding wheel to true the opposed side face of the wheel.
3. A grinding machine having a base, a transversely movable rotatable grinding wheel,- a longitudinally movable work table, manually operable means to traverse said table longitudinally, a
rotatable work support thereon, and a truing apparatus therefor comprising a rotatable supporting member, a pair of truing tools adjustably mounted on said support in spaced relation to each other and arranged to true the opposite side faces of a grinding wheel, a stop on said base and a pair of opposed adjustable dogs on said table, and adjusting means on said dogs to precisely locate said table to successively position each of said truing tools in a predetermined position relative to the opposite side face of the grinding wheel, and means to rock said member, successivelyto pass the truing tools in 'arcuate paths across the opposed side faces of the grinding wheel to true the same.

A grinding machine having a base, a trans versely movable rotatable grinding wheel, a =longitudinally movable work table, a rotatable work support thereon, and a truing apparatus therefor comprising a supporting member arranged to be held by said work support, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said member, a pair of spaced radially extending. projections .on said sleeve, a truing tool adjustably mounted on each of said arms position said sleeveto locate said third truing tool in a predetermined position with relation to the wheel, and means to move the grinding wheel transversely toward thethird truing tool'while the table is traversed to true the peripheral face of the grinding wheel.
5. A truing apparatus for grinding machines comprising a supporting member having spaced aligning and supporting surfaces adjacent to the opposite ends thereof which are arranged to be supported on a pair of spaced opposed work holders, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said member,
;a pair of spaced radially eiten'ding arms on said sleeve, a truing tool adiustably mounted in each of said arms and arranged to true the opposite side faces of a grinding wheel when the sleeve is 5 rocked, a boss on said sleeve, and a truing tool adiustably supported by said boss which. is ar ranged to true the peripheral face of said grinding wheel. A truing apparatus for grinding machines .10 comprising a supporting member having spaced aligning and supporting surfaces thereon adjacent to its opposite ends, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said member; a pair of spaced thrust collars on saidsupporting member which are arl ranged to locate said sleeve on said member, at least-one of said collars being adJustable to take up theend thrust betweensaid member-and sleeve, a pair of spaced radially extending arms on said sleeve, a truing tool adjustahly mounted 20 on each of said arms and arranged to true the opposite side faces'oi' a grinding wheel when the sleeve is rocked, and a,manually operable lever adiustably mounted on said sleeve to rock said sleeve to pass the truing tools in an arcuate path acre-sea across the opposite plane side faeesof the grinding wheel.

A truing apparatus for grinding machines comprising a supporting member having spaced aligning and supporting surfaces thereon adjacent to its opposite ends, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said member, a pair of spaced thrust collars on said supporting member which are to rock said sleeve to pass .thetruing tools in an arcuate path across the opposite side faces of the grinding" wheel. v v
